If the Hindi text must always appear on screen, burn it into the video with FFmpeg’s subtitle filter. That is different from viewer-selectable live captions: YouTube documents caption routes such as embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 or software that sends captions over HTTP POST, but a timed SRT file passed to FFmpeg is not established as a way to send selectable captions over YouTube RTMPS.
The example below is a starting pattern, not a tested, universal 24/7 command. Input format, FFmpeg build, fonts, network, and YouTube’s event setup all affect the final configuration. Test it with an unlisted stream before using it on a public channel.
Choose how Hindi subtitles should appear

Burned-in Hindi text
FFmpeg’s subtitles filter can render a subtitle file such as SRT into the video frames. Viewers do not get a caption toggle, but the text travels with the picture. Confirm the filter exists in your FFmpeg build and that the host has a font and rendering stack that correctly shapes Devanagari. In a test stream, inspect conjuncts, vowel marks, line breaks, contrast, placement, and timing in YouTube’s preview and actual playback.
Selectable live captions
YouTube Help’s “Live caption requirements” says captions must be sent to YouTube. Its documented options include embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions and software capable of sending captions via HTTP POST; the 608/708 route supports multiple languages, while YouTube currently supports one caption track for this mode. A prepared captions.srt input alone should not be treated as proof that viewers will receive selectable Hindi captions from an RTMPS stream. Confirm that the chosen caption software and delivery route work in a live test, including language metadata and viewing from a separate account.

Separate subtitle tracks
FFmpeg supports SRT and WebVTT, and can mux WebVTT subtitles in HLS output. Those format capabilities do not establish that YouTube’s RTMPS live ingest will expose the subtitle stream to viewers. If captions need to be selectable, use a caption path YouTube documents for live streams rather than relying on an ordinary SRT input or a separate muxed track.
Prepare the video and check FFmpeg
- Check your installed build. Run
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -filters. FFmpeg documentation may describe a newer revision than the binary installed on your machine. Look for the subtitle filter and confirm that your chosen video and audio encoders are available. - Prepare a repeatable source. For a single prerecorded file, verify its duration, video and audio streams, and subtitle timing. If you use a playlist of separate segments, confirm that it returns to the beginning and that audio does not disappear or break between items. Do not assume an input loops identically on every container or FFmpeg build.
- Check subtitle rendering locally. Preview the rendered output before the live test. Confirm UTF-8 text, Devanagari shaping, font coverage, safe placement, and readable contrast. A subtitle filter’s availability does not by itself guarantee correct Hindi rendering on a particular host.
- Set up a test event. Create or select a YouTube live stream and use an unlisted test before production. YouTube recommends testing, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health.
Get YouTube’s RTMPS address and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the intended stream.
- Reveal the stream key and copy both the server address and key shown for that stream. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; explicitly select or reveal the RTMPS endpoint.
- Keep the key secret. Do not place a real key in a public script, screenshot, repository, or log. Use a protected environment variable or another secret-management method available on your host.
- Use the exact endpoint and key displayed in Live Control Room. In FFmpeg, the publishing destination is the output URL; RTMPS is RTMP over a secure SSL connection.
Choose an encoder configuration
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Choose a combination supported by both your FFmpeg build and your source. H.264 is a practical starting point when compatibility matters. YouTube transcodes live streams for viewer playback, but a stable, correctly configured ingest is still necessary.

These are video values for the stated codec, resolution, and frame rate; audio adds to the total upload demand. YouTube’s network guidance recommends planning upload capacity for primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20% headroom. Use a reliable connection and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators rather than assuming a nominal internet-plan speed is available continuously.

Illustrative 1080p30 H.264 settings
The following command illustrates one file, burned-in UTF-8 SRT subtitles, H.264 at the YouTube-recommended 1080p30 video bitrate, AAC audio, and a two-second keyframe interval. Replace the input, subtitle filename, and output placeholder. Replace the output placeholder with the RTMPS publishing URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room; never paste a real key into a public copy of this example.

-f flv "<RTMPS_URL_AND_STREAM_KEY_FROM_LIVE_CONTROL_ROOM>"This is an adaptable pattern, not a guarantee that -stream_loop -1 behaves the same for every input or that the subtitle filter and font stack are installed. The -map options explicitly select the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream; remove or change the audio mapping if your source needs a different track. The subtitle filter renders text into the video before video encoding. The 14 Mbps figure is YouTube’s recommendation for 1080p30 H.264, not a requirement for every channel. The GOP values shown correspond to a two-second interval at 30 fps; for a different frame rate, adjust the keyframe interval accordingly and keep it at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum. FFmpeg option support and output behavior depend on the installed build and input.
Using another resolution, frame rate, or codec
Use YouTube’s current encoder matrix in Live Control Room or YouTube Help to select the bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not carry the 1080p30 H.264 bitrate into a different target by assumption. Keep CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where your encoder supports those settings, and ensure the keyframe interval never exceeds four seconds. Check local encoder availability before choosing HEVC or AV1.

Start the stream and verify it before leaving it unattended
- Run the command against your test event and wait for YouTube’s preview to show the intended video and audio.
- Check motion, audio continuity, Hindi glyphs, subtitle timing, and actual playback from a viewer account. Confirm whether the captions are burned in or delivered by the caption workflow you selected.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health status for bitrate or connection warnings. If it reports instability, reduce the target bitrate or improve the connection, then test again. Leave the recommended upload headroom for the stream and any backup feed.
- Record locally if you need a complete copy. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise a full archive for a longer continuous session.
- Run FFmpeg under an operating-system service or process supervisor configured to restart on failure and alert you. A continuously running FFmpeg process does not by itself guarantee that the YouTube event remains open indefinitely or that the whole setup recovers from every failure.
Keep a 24/7 stream reliable
Supervision and output recovery
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer provides an attempt_recovery option that can try to recover network output after failures. Its drop_pkts_on_overflow option allows encoding to continue if the queue fills, but packets can be lost; only use it if gaps in the stream are acceptable. FIFO recovery does not replace a process supervisor, alerts, YouTube preview checks, or stream-health monitoring.
Input reconnection is not a publishing restart
FFmpeg protocol options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_on_network_error apply to inputs when the relevant protocol supports them. They do not automatically restart the whole YouTube publishing process after every output failure. Confirm option support for the input protocol and installed FFmpeg version before relying on these flags.

Plan the event and archive separately
A 24/7 encoder loop and a 24/7 YouTube event are separate concerns. YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but the reviewed guidance does not establish a full-archive guarantee for a longer continuous session or a universally best way to divide one into events. If uninterrupted playback and a complete archive both matter, plan monitoring, local recording, and an intentional event lifecycle rather than relying on the encoder loop alone.

Power and network resilience
For a self-hosted setup, consider what happens if power or the network fails. A UPS for the streaming computer and network equipment may help with short outages; size it based on the equipment’s measured load and the runtime you actually need. A UPS does not protect against an internet-provider outage or a YouTube-side interruption.
Troubleshoot common problems
