To run a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream from Ubuntu, prepare a seamless audio-video loop, send it to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, and supervise the encoder and remote stream health. The command below is a starting point for a pre-rendered 1080p30 H.264 file; test it with your actual media and internet connection before leaving it unattended. India does not require a different FFmpeg profile—the practical constraint is whether your upload connection can reliably sustain the chosen bitrate.
What you need before configuring FFmpeg
- An Ubuntu computer or hosted Ubuntu machine that can remain online, with reliable upload connectivity.
- Enough storage for the media if it is stored on that machine.
- A pre-rendered video containing both the lofi audio and visuals, with a loop point that does not produce an obvious jump.
- FFmpeg with the encoders your command uses. Install it through your chosen Ubuntu package source or another maintained distribution method, then check the build with
ffmpeg -versionand available encoders withffmpeg -encoders. FFmpeg documents its native AAC encoder, whilelibx264availability depends on how the installed build was configured. See the FFmpeg documentation. - Permission to livestream every audio and visual component, and records of applicable licenses.
A local host gives you direct control over the machine and media, but depends on its power and network staying available. A hosted Ubuntu machine avoids relying on home power and internet, but adds hosting cost and remote-administration needs. Neither option is universally better; choose based on continuity, storage, access, and cost.
Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended for H.264 at 1080p30. It recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, RTMP or RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, and 44.1 kHz stereo audio. These are YouTube’s specifications, not a guarantee that a particular connection in India can maintain them. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Measure the upload connection under conditions similar to the planned broadcast, and leave dependable capacity beyond the encoder’s target for fluctuations and other network use. Test video movement and audio representative of the live stream; YouTube also advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, then create or select the stream.
- Copy the server or ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube requires both values; use the exact URL and protocol it provides. The YouTube encoder setup guide describes the workflow.
- Store the key in a root-readable configuration or environment file, or use a suitable systemd credential mechanism. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, source repository, or shared log.
- Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
Send a pre-rendered loop with FFmpeg
For a repeatable setup, combine the visuals and lofi audio into one seamless loop file. Looping one input avoids the separate playlist-length and synchronization problems that can arise when audio and video are looped independently. If you only have a still image and separate music, render them into a suitable video asset first or build and thoroughly test a filter/playlist pipeline; the command below is not a direct still-image-plus-playlist recipe.

/srv/lofi/loop.mp4with the actual media path, readable by the user running FFmpeg. - Replace the destination with the exact ingest URL and stream key supplied by YouTube Studio. Do not use a key copied from an example or article. For production, avoid embedding the secret in a command that may be exposed in shell history or process listings; use protected configuration and a method appropriate to the host.
- Confirm the installed build has
libx264withffmpeg -encoders. If it does not, use an available compatible encoder and validate its options rather than assuming this command will work unchanged. - Here,
-rereads at real-time pace and-stream_loop -1repeats the input.-g 60makes a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at the specified 30 fps. The 5,000 kbps video target matches YouTube’s stated 1080p30 H.264 minimum, not its recommended 14 Mbps setting. - Test this exact command and file with the installed FFmpeg version. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview, audio, aspect ratio, frame rate, bitrate, and stream-health messages before relying on it.
Make the Ubuntu stream unattended
Run FFmpeg under a dedicated unprivileged user, with media paths readable by that user and credentials protected. A systemd service can start the encoder after networking is available and restart it after a process exit. Use a sensible restart delay to avoid rapid repeated failures.

Follow local output with journalctl -u <service-name> -f. Process supervision only sees local process state: FFmpeg can be running while YouTube is receiving unhealthy or no media. Check the Live Control Room after starting and after every restart, and arrange an alert or check routine that verifies both local activity and remote stream health. A restart policy is recovery from some encoder failures, not proof of a successful broadcast.
Before leaving the stream unattended, run an end-to-end test using representative audio and motion. Test a process restart and a network interruption, then confirm that the remote stream actually recovers. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health.

Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will become one automatically archived video. Check the current Live Control Room behavior and decide how to handle the live session and any recordings you want to keep; see YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

YouTube’s Partner Program eligibility page lists policy compliance, regional availability, no active Community Guidelines strikes, two-step verification, access to advanced features, and a linked AdSense for YouTube account among its requirements. As of the page checked October 3, 2026, it lists either 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days; applications are reviewed. These thresholds and requirements can change, so consult YouTube Partner Program eligibility before applying.
