For a typical stereo YouTube radio livestream, set FFmpeg to AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, with two audio channels. Add these output options before the output URL: -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2. YouTube’s live-encoder guidance recommends those stereo audio settings and CBR encoding. YouTube’s encoder settings
Set the stereo audio bitrate in FFmpeg
Use this output-option group for an ordinary stereo radio program:
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-c:a aacselects AAC audio encoding.-b:a 128ksets the audio bitrate target to 128,000 bits per second.-ar 44100selects a 44.1 kHz sample rate.-ac 2requests two audio channels for stereo.
FFmpeg documents -b:a as the audio bitrate option, expressed in bits per second. For its native AAC encoder, setting the bitrate activates CBR mode; if omitted, the documented default is 128 kbps. Stating the option explicitly makes the intended setting clear. FFmpeg codec documentation · FFmpeg command-line documentation

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
Replace INPUT and the ingest URL with values for your source and YouTube Live setup. This is an example of command structure, not a tested, ready-to-run command: a radio livestream also needs an appropriate video component and valid ingest configuration. Keep your stream key private; do not publish it or share it in logs, screenshots, or scripts that others can access.
Choose stereo or 5.1 audio
YouTube’s published live-encoder guidance distinguishes ordinary stereo from 5.1 surround. Match the settings to the audio program you actually produce:

| Audio layout | Codec | Sample rate | Audio bitrate | FFmpeg options |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo | AAC | 44.1 kHz | 128 kbps | -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 |
| 5.1 surround | AAC or MP3 supported by YouTube for RTMP/RTMPS; the recommendation applies to 5.1 audio | 48 kHz | 384 kbps | Set options for the selected encoder and actual 5.1 source; the cited guidance does not prescribe a complete FFmpeg command. |
The 384 kbps recommendation is for 5.1 surround, not a higher-quality setting to apply to ordinary stereo radio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends CBR. YouTube live encoder settings
Keep audio bitrate separate from video bitrate
-b:a sets the audio bitrate. Video bitrate is configured separately, generally with -b:v. YouTube’s resolution-based video bitrate guidance does not replace its audio recommendation, so changing video settings does not configure the radio program’s audio bitrate. - PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Verify the output before relying on it
- Check FFmpeg’s output information and confirm that the encoded audio stream is AAC, reports the intended sample rate, and has two channels.
- Run a test stream with representative audio before depending on a continuous broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room or the Live API health diagnostics. If YouTube flags bitrate, codec, sample rate, or channel count, use the specific diagnostic to find the mismatch and adjust the corresponding output option. YouTube Live API stream diagnostics
The configured 128 kbps is a target; it does not prove that YouTube has accepted the stream, nor does it mean every audio segment consumes exactly that rate. Confirm the actual encoded output and YouTube’s ingest health messages.
Troubleshoot common audio-setting problems
- YouTube reports an audio bitrate issue: Check that
-b:a 128kappears before the output URL and applies to the output audio stream. Confirm the actual FFmpeg output and retest. - The channel count or sample rate is flagged: For stereo, use
-ac 2and-ar 44100; inspect FFmpeg’s reported output rather than assuming the options took effect. - You set a video bitrate but audio is still wrong:
-b:vand-b:aconfigure different streams. Set the audio options separately. - You are considering a lower stereo bitrate: It may be chosen for a specific technical or bandwidth constraint, but YouTube’s published stereo recommendation is 128 kbps. Verify any alternative against current encoder guidance and stream-health diagnostics.
- You are considering variable bitrate: FFmpeg’s native AAC bitrate option supports the fixed target shown here, and YouTube recommends CBR. Do not assume a VBR-only recipe is suitable without checking the selected encoder’s documentation and YouTube’s current ingest advice.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube radio stream from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo handles the looping in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. The uploaded file streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube livestreams only.
