To deliver video with CloudFront, first package it into a streaming format such as HLS or DASH, store it on an origin, then configure a CloudFront distribution to route and cache its manifests and media segments. CloudFront distributes packaged files; it does not encode a raw video into adaptive streaming renditions. The exact settings depend on whether you are serving stored video on demand (VOD) or a live feed, and whether viewers need access controls.

How CloudFront fits into a video workflow

CloudFront is a content delivery network (CDN): it obtains objects from an origin and serves them to viewers, including from edge caches when an object is available there. That architecture is not a guaranteed latency or performance figure. Before CloudFront can distribute video, a separate encoder or packager must create the manifests and media segments the player expects. The Amazon CloudFront Developer Guide puts it plainly: “You must use an encoder to package video content before CloudFront can distribute the content.” Amazon CloudFront Developer Guide

Common delivery formats include Apple HLS, MPEG-DASH, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. Choose a format based on the player and packaging workflow you intend to use; URL extensions and cache behaviors must then match the files that workflow produces.

Choose the workflow and origin

Use case Typical preparation Possible origin
VOD Encode and package stored source media into the renditions, manifests, and segments required by the player. Amazon S3 or another HTTP server/origin.
Live Encode a live input and package its continuously updated manifests and segments. A live origin such as AWS Elemental MediaPackage or MediaStore in AWS-documented workflows.

AWS names MediaConvert as an encoder example for VOD and MediaLive as an example for live workflows. These are examples, not CloudFront requirements. CloudFront’s role is to fetch and deliver the packaged output. AWS VOD workflow

Configure CloudFront for VOD from S3

  1. Package the video. Use an encoder/packager configured for the target player and format. Verify that its output includes a playable manifest and all referenced segment or media objects.
  2. Put the output in an S3 bucket. Keep related manifests and media objects in paths that make it practical to route and protect them together. If the content is private, do not leave the bucket publicly readable merely to make playback work.
  3. Create a CloudFront distribution and set the S3 origin. The origin is the resource CloudFront requests objects from. For a private bucket, configure Origin Access Control (OAC) and the bucket policy so viewers retrieve objects through CloudFront rather than bypassing the distribution to fetch them directly. Follow AWS’s current S3/CloudFront setup steps. Create a CloudFront distribution for an S3 origin Restrict access to an S3 origin
  4. Set up cache behaviors for the packaged paths. A behavior routes matching viewer paths to an origin and associates settings such as cache policy and access restrictions. Use path patterns appropriate to the files your packager actually produces. If manifests and segments need different caching or access settings, create separate behaviors; do not assume that a single broad pattern is right for every format.
  5. Choose cache policy and origin request settings deliberately. A cache policy determines which selected request values—such as query strings—become part of the cache key. Origin request settings determine which values are forwarded to the origin. Include only the headers, cookies, and query strings your player and origin require. Forwarding everything without a reason can reduce cache sharing and increase origin requests. Control the cache key Control origin requests
  6. Use HTTPS for viewers. CloudFront can serve viewer requests over HTTPS. If using a custom domain, configure the domain and an appropriate certificate; AWS’s S3 tutorial describes using AWS Certificate Manager for HTTPS with a custom domain. AWS S3 and CloudFront tutorial
  7. Test playback through the distribution. Put the CloudFront object URL for the top-level manifest into the player or application. Confirm that the manifest and every referenced segment load through CloudFront, not just the initial file. Test from a viewer context that matches the intended access rules.

Configure CloudFront for live streaming

Live video requires an encoder and a live packaging origin as well as CloudFront. The origin continuously exposes updated manifests and segments; cache settings must not cause viewers to receive stale playlist content. AWS’s MediaPackage live workflow uses separate behaviors where needed for parent/child manifests and media segments. The path patterns vary by format and endpoint: AWS documents examples using .m3u8 manifests and .ts segments for an HLS endpoint, and .mpd manifests with .mp4 media for DASH. Match patterns to your actual MediaPackage endpoint and output, rather than copying extensions blindly. CloudFront live streaming with AWS Elemental MediaPackage

MediaPackage-specific cache and request settings

  • For the documented MediaPackage workflow, redirect viewer HTTP requests to HTTPS.
  • Set the minimum TTL to five seconds or less to help avoid stale live content. This is guidance for that MediaPackage workflow, not a universal CloudFront default for every live origin.
  • Forward only query strings the workflow needs. AWS specifies m for MediaPackage manifest modification time.
  • For LL-HLS manifest behaviors, forward _HLS_msn and _HLS_part so blocking playlist requests can work. Do not apply these parameters to unrelated origins unless their workflow requires them.
  • AWS recommends header-based CDN authorization between the MediaPackage endpoint and CloudFront. Confirm the current MediaPackage-side configuration in its documentation before deployment.

Choose cache behavior and content access

Cache identity, origin forwarding, freshness, and authorization are connected decisions. A manifest may update frequently while its referenced segments remain unchanged once published; set cache behavior to fit the update cadence and the requirements of the origin and player. There is no single TTL or query-string policy that fits all VOD and live systems.

Public or private S3 content

Public content can be served without viewer signing, but a private S3 origin should be protected with OAC and a bucket policy that permits the distribution to retrieve objects. That prevents direct public bucket access from becoming an unintended alternate delivery path.

Restricting viewer access

For a restricted HLS presentation made up of many files, signed cookies can be more practical than signing every manifest and segment URL individually. Signed URLs suit access to individual files or clients that cannot use cookies. Configure the relevant cache behavior to require viewer authorization and establish the trusted signer or key configuration before issuing signed requests. Verify playback and troubleshoot common failures

  • The player cannot open the manifest: Check that the manifest URL points to CloudFront, the behavior’s path pattern matches it, the origin path is correct, and the object exists at the origin. For private content, verify the viewer’s signed request or cookie.
  • The manifest opens but playback stalls or segments return errors: Inspect the manifest’s referenced URLs and confirm those paths also match the intended behaviors and origin. Check that all referenced objects were uploaded or are being published by the live packager.
  • Live viewers see an old playlist: Review the manifest behavior’s TTL and cache policy against the origin’s update cadence. For the documented MediaPackage configuration, AWS advises a minimum TTL of five seconds or less.
  • Low-Latency HLS blocking requests do not work: For the MediaPackage LL-HLS manifest behavior, confirm the origin request configuration forwards _HLS_msn and _HLS_part.
  • CloudFront returns access denied for S3 files: Check the OAC configuration, the S3 bucket policy, and whether the distribution points at the expected bucket and object path. Confirm that the files are not being requested directly from S3 when the bucket is private.
  • Content is unexpectedly unavailable with signing enabled: Check that the behavior requires the intended trusted signer/key and that the URL or cookie is valid for the requested file and path.
  • Cache behavior is inconsistent across requests: Review which query strings, headers, and cookies enter the cache key and which are forwarded to the origin. Include only values the workflow needs, but do not omit parameters that the origin relies on.

Keep live video online without operating your own CloudFront workflow

CloudFront is for delivering packaged media from an origin; it is not a one-step way to keep a YouTube channel streaming around the clock. If your specific goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that job, not a replacement CDN configuration tutorial. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from its cloud service. It streams to YouTube only.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home: your computer and internet connection can be off. Upload the video, add the stream key, and go live. Each slot streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode the video. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers it. The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
