For a typical stereo spoken-word podcast on YouTube Live, set OBS’s streaming audio bitrate to 128 Kbps and the sample rate to 44.1 kHz. In OBS, open Settings → Output and change the streaming Audio Bitrate; choose AAC if it is available. YouTube’s recommendations for its live encoder are more specific to this destination than OBS’s general streaming guideline.
Set the YouTube Live audio settings in OBS
- Open the streaming output controls. In OBS, select Settings → Output. Find the streaming audio bitrate control. Make sure you are changing the streaming setting, not a recording audio bitrate.
- Set Audio Bitrate to 128 Kbps. YouTube recommends this value for stereo audio in its live encoder settings.
- Set the sample rate to 44.1 kHz. YouTube specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo in the same guidance. Depending on your OBS version and configuration, sample rate may be under Settings → Audio, rather than Output.
- Use stereo and AAC where available. Stereo suits a conventional podcast mix. YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS; AAC is an appropriate choice when available in OBS’s streaming output.
- Apply the changes and test. Confirm the microphone or other intended audio source is reaching OBS, then test the stream before the planned broadcast.
OBS versions and Output Mode can change how the output controls appear. If you cannot find the streaming Audio Bitrate field, check the Output Mode and make sure you are viewing streaming controls rather than recording controls. OBS’s overview describes around 160 Kbps as a general streaming starting point, or a lower value when upload speed is limited. For a stereo podcast going to YouTube Live, use YouTube’s destination-specific 128 Kbps recommendation.
Keep audio bitrate separate from video settings
The audio bitrate controls the encoded audio stream; it does not set the video bitrate. YouTube’s video recommendations vary according to incoming video codec, resolution and frame rate. Even a podcast with a static image or minimal visuals needs a valid video feed for a YouTube Live encoder stream, so choose video settings separately for the visual format and available upload bandwidth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not apply YouTube’s surround-sound values to an ordinary stereo podcast. Its 5.1 recommendation is a separate use case: 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Use those values only when producing a 5.1 stream, not as a way to improve a stereo speech mix.

Check the source and signal before going live
A bitrate setting cannot fix a noisy microphone, weak input level or a microphone that OBS is not receiving. OBS lets you add an audio input device, such as a microphone, as a scene source. Check the OBS audio meters while speaking and make sure the intended source is active.
Avoid capturing the same device both globally in Settings → Audio and again as a scene input unless you intend to do so. OBS warns that capturing it in both places can cause echo. An external microphone is optional; changing the bitrate does not require buying new equipment.

Test the full stream and leave network headroom
YouTube advises creators to test before starting a live stream. Test with audio and motion similar to what the actual broadcast will contain, then watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and event. Verify that audio is audible, the stream reports healthy, and there are no network interruptions.

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. Account for both audio and video when checking the total; lowering audio alone will not compensate for a video stream that exceeds the connection’s capacity.
