To configure OBS for a school channel, create a dedicated scene collection for the channel’s scenes and sources, then pair it with a separate profile for recording and video settings. Choose a deliberate recording path and a recoverable file format, test the complete workflow, and treat 24/7 operation as an operational goal—not a guarantee: OBS’s launch options can start a recording, but they do not by themselves provide crash, power-loss, or full-disk recovery.
Scene collection and profile: what each one saves

Switching to the channel’s collection is not enough to ensure that OBS has the intended recording settings. Use a clearly named collection and a corresponding recording profile, and verify both before operation. See the OBS Project’s Scene Collections and Profiles documentation.
Set up the school channel collection
- Create a dedicated collection. In OBS, open Scene Collection and create a new collection with a recognizable name, such as
School Channel – Recording. Add only the scenes the channel needs. Possible scenes include a holding or title screen, a program scene, an announcement or schedule, and a closing screen; these are examples, not required OBS presets. - Add and label sources. Scenes can combine items such as images, text, video, webcams or capture devices, and display sources. Use names another staff member can understand, especially for school-specific assets and any live inputs.
- Check visibility and order. Confirm that sources are enabled as intended and stacked correctly. Inspect each scene in the preview so that text, graphics, video, and any live input appear as expected.
- Check audio. Confirm the selected audio devices and watch the audio meters while relevant sources play. A visually correct scene can still produce silence or use the wrong input.
Create and configure a recording profile
Create or select a profile specifically for this channel’s recording and video output. Keep in mind that a profile and a scene collection are separate OBS settings: the collection stores the layout and sources; the profile stores most output-related settings. The profile does not automatically travel with the collection, so include both in the operating procedure and check the selected names before recording.

Choose the recording destination and format
In Settings > Output, configure the recording path and format. Choose a destination that staff can identify and that has an appropriate storage and retention plan. The capacity needed cannot be determined without the recording quality or bitrate, hours recorded, and how long files must be kept.

OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop will not corrupt the whole file. If another application requires MP4, use OBS’s remux function after recording to convert the container. Remuxing is a compatibility step, not a guarantee that lost or damaged data can be recovered. See the OBS Project’s Standard Recording Output Guide, published May 26, 2023.
Select encoder and quality for the actual computer
Choose an encoder and recording quality that the school’s computer can sustain. OBS notes that output settings other than Same as stream can require additional system resources. There is no universal quality setting that can be assumed to work on every machine, so test the selected encoder and settings under the intended workload before relying on them.

Set resolution, frame rate, and audio deliberately
In Settings > Video, set the base (canvas) resolution, output resolution, and frame rate for the school’s material and hardware. Higher frame rates such as 60 fps can be taxing compared with 30 fps; more frames are not automatically better for a channel made mostly of slides, announcements, or prerecorded programs. Verify audio devices and levels as part of the same test. OBS describes these controls and recommends testing in its Quick Start Guide.

Before scheduling or relying on the channel, make a short recording. The OBS Project strongly encourages a test of a few minutes rather than going straight into a first recording or stream. For a school setup, use the test to check the whole path:

- Confirm the intended scene collection and recording profile are selected.
- Record for several minutes, switch through every planned scene, and confirm the transitions and source visibility.
- Listen to the recorded file and verify that the expected audio is present and intelligible.
- Open the output file and check that it is saved in the chosen recording path and plays as expected.
- Check available storage and confirm that staff know the retention and file-management process.
- Practice the actual launch or start procedure that will be used during school operations.
OBS’s test advice is in its Quick Start Guide, published August 25, 2021. A successful short test confirms that the tested configuration worked for that test; it does not establish that a particular computer can encode continuously or that a drive has enough capacity for an ongoing archive.
Launch OBS with the collection, profile, and recording started
OBS documents launch parameters that can select a scene collection and profile and begin recording. A launch command can help standardize startup, but it is only a launch mechanism. It does not demonstrate that OBS will recover after a crash, restart after power loss, alert staff, or handle a full or disconnected drive.

- Confirm the exact names. Note the names of the scene collection and profile as shown in OBS. The names supplied to the launch parameters need to match.
- Use the documented parameters. The relevant options are
--collection "name",--profile "name", and--startrecording. Replacenamewith the actual collection and profile names. - For an automated Windows launch, set the working directory. OBS’s launch-parameter guidance says to set the working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exewhen using scheduled or automated Windows launches. - Run a realistic launch test. Verify that OBS opens with the right collection and profile and that a recording actually starts in the intended destination. Check the resulting file rather than assuming the command succeeded.
See the OBS Project’s Launch Parameters documentation. Separately determine how the school’s operating system and procedures will detect a failed recording, restart or relaunch OBS if appropriate, notify a responsible person, and respond to storage or power problems. Those recovery guarantees are not established by the launch parameters.

Plan storage and continuity as school operations
A 24/7 recording workflow depends on more than an OBS collection. The OBS documentation establishes that recordings go to the configured path; it does not establish the capacity needed for a particular school, the computer’s ability to encode indefinitely, or the recovery behavior of the school’s operating system and storage. Base the storage plan on the chosen recording settings, recording hours, and retention period, then monitor free space and decide who is responsible for removing or archiving files.

- Storage fills up: check free space and the retention process. The appropriate capacity depends on actual recording settings and how long recordings are kept; there is no universal figure.
- The destination becomes unavailable: verify the configured path and the status of the drive or network location. Include drive disconnection in the operational test.
- OBS or the computer stops: the documented startup parameters can start OBS recording, but do not themselves detect or recover from a crash or power loss. Define a separate restart, alert, and human-response plan.
