Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to list compatible music-video files in a text playlist, then send the combined output to YouTube Live with a consistent encoder profile. The playlist itself does not make a stream reliable: its files must expose matching streams, codecs and time bases, and YouTube recommends testing representative audio and video before going live.
1. Prepare the music files and confirm you have the rights
Before building the playlist, decide whether the items are compatible for packet concatenation. The concat demuxer expects every file to have the same streams, with matching codecs and time bases. Music videos collected from different sources may not meet that requirement. An FFmpeg-user mailing-list response describes changed stream properties as a cause of mixed-playlist failures and suggests transcoding items to matching properties first; this is practical community advice, not an official guarantee (FFmpeg-user mailing list, 22 September 2024).
- Check that each item has the same intended video and audio stream layout.
- Compare codecs and time bases before relying on the concat demuxer.
- If the files differ, normalize them to one profile before concatenating, or use the concat filter and re-encode the result.
Technical compatibility does not grant permission to broadcast a track. Confirm you have rights for both the live transmission and any replay, for the territories where the channel is available. The permissions required depend on the music and use; the technical guidance does not identify a licensor or establish that any particular track is cleared.

Make a plain-text file, for example playlist.ffconcat, with one file directive per item, in playback order:

file 'music/track-03.mp4'The paths here are examples, not a tested playlist. The optional auto-detection header must be the exact first line shown, with no extra spaces or byte-order mark. The concat demuxer also recognizes a playlist without that header when it is invoked with the appropriate format option. See the FFmpeg documentation for the concat demuxer.
Paths, quoting and the safe-path default
Use paths that are valid from the directory in which FFmpeg will run. The default safe setting rejects paths it considers unsafe, including absolute paths and protocol-like paths. Turning safety off with -safe 0 allows any filename, but it also removes that path restriction; do not add it automatically. Prefer safe relative paths where practical. Paths with spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping in the playlist syntax.

Durations and timestamp continuity
The demuxer adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and subsequent files follow the preceding file. It relies on each file’s duration to calculate those offsets. Incorrect duration information— including estimates based on bitrate or truncated media—can cause timestamp artifacts at transitions. If a file’s duration is wrong or unavailable, the demuxer supports a per-file duration directive to override it; use a reliable duration rather than guessing (FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation).

FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes these methods: it recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed, and the concat demuxer when compatible inputs can be joined without re-encoding (FFmpeg FAQ). They are not interchangeable fixes for every playlist.

4. Set the outgoing YouTube Live encoder profile
The playlist input and the YouTube output are separate decisions. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; and up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Match the output profile to the ingest options shown in your YouTube Live Control Room (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of stability or a universal setting. The table varies by codec, resolution and frame rate. Choose a rate your upload connection can sustain and run a speed test; a higher target than the connection can reliably carry can undermine a continuous stream.
Audio settings
YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo audio in its advanced settings. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps, and requires AAC for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS. Use the stereo or surround settings that match the source and stream you intend to deliver (YouTube encoder guidance).

5. Test the complete playlist before running it nonstop
- Check the input. Confirm every playlist path resolves and that the files have compatible stream layouts, codecs and time bases if using the demuxer.
- Run a representative test. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Include audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, rather than testing only a silent or static segment.
- Verify transitions. Listen and watch across several file boundaries. Look for gaps, cut-off audio, timestamp jumps, missing streams or other artifacts, especially if duration metadata may be inaccurate.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and messages. During the test and live event, monitor YouTube’s status information and respond to warnings rather than assuming that a successful FFmpeg process means a healthy ingest.

6. Troubleshoot common playlist and live-stream failures
