To connect OBS Studio to a YouTube Live broadcast, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, enter them in Settings > Stream in OBS, then start OBS and approve the broadcast in YouTube’s Live Control Room. The stream key is a credential, and devotional subject matter alone does not establish permission to broadcast a particular recording or performance.
Before you add the stream key
Confirm that your YouTube channel is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The cited guidance does not describe a separate India-specific requirement for using an OBS stream key. See YouTube’s livestreaming tips.
- Sign in to the YouTube account that owns or manages the channel.
- Have OBS installed and ready to send your video and audio.
- Choose the exact recording or live performance you intend to broadcast, and confirm you have the necessary rights to use it.
Find the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab in Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one. If you have streamed before, YouTube may load previously used stream settings and a key.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. Keep both available while configuring OBS. The encoder workflow is described in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Enter the key in OBS Studio
- Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream.
- If YouTube is available in the Service menu, select it and enter the copied key in the stream-key field.
- If you need to configure a custom service, choose that option, then enter YouTube’s stream URL in OBS’s server field and the key in the separate stream-key field. Do not swap them: the URL is the server address; the key identifies the stream connection.
- Apply the settings and close the settings window.
The precise names or availability of service options may vary with OBS versions. YouTube’s documented encoder sequence is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

- In OBS, prepare the scene you intend to broadcast, including the correct video source and audio source.
- Select Start Streaming in OBS. This sends the feed to YouTube; it does not by itself make the broadcast public.
- Return to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview.
- Check that the picture and sound are correct, then select Go live in Live Control Room.
For a scheduled devotional programme, test the entire route ahead of time. YouTube recommends previewing before going live and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality. If suitable for your channel and event, use an unlisted test. See YouTube’s livestreaming tips and streaming tips.

Use reliable video, audio, and upload settings
For a conventional SDR stream over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s published encoder guidance includes H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection between the encoder and YouTube. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the bitrate appropriate to your chosen codec and resolution rather than relying on a single bitrate for every stream. Read YouTube’s RTMPS guidance for the encrypted connection.
- Resolution and frame rate: Choose values supported by your source and stable upload connection. Higher settings require more upload capacity.
- Bitrate: Use YouTube’s guidance for the selected resolution and codec. A setting that exceeds what your connection can sustain can lead to interruptions or poor stream health.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval for the conventional encoder setup described above.
- Audio: Check that OBS is capturing the intended source and that the levels are audible without clipping in the preview.
- Upload capacity: Run an upload speed test, leave headroom, and account for other people and devices sharing the connection. Test with movement and audio similar to the actual programme; monitor Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If an archive matters, keep the programme within that duration; do not assume a longer stream will be archived automatically. See the encoder setup instructions.

Protect the key and reset it if exposed
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not show it in a screen recording or share it publicly. If you think it has been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Studio under Go Live > Stream. After resetting it, replace the old key in OBS with the new one before streaming. Check music rights before broadcasting
A bhajan, kirtan, Gurbani, or other devotional work is not automatically free to livestream because of its subject or tradition. Rights can depend on the particular composition, arrangement, sound recording, backing track, and performance. Confirm that you have permission for the exact material and planned broadcast. YouTube’s stream settings guidance tells creators to ensure their audio and video do not infringe on others’ content, but it does not determine the rights for a particular work or performance in India. Troubleshoot common connection problems
