Send that URL as webhook_url (or the provider’s equivalent callback_url). The callback carries the render result; it does not make a private target page accessible to the screenshot service.
The configuration checklist
- Create a dedicated POST route. Parse the exact JSON or multipart format documented by your provider.
- Publish it on a real hostname. Public DNS, a valid certificate, an open firewall/WAF path and the correct route are all required.
- Authenticate before parsing. Verify the provider’s HMAC or signature header against the untouched request bytes.
- Acknowledge durable receipt. Store the event or place it on a queue, then return a 2xx response without waiting for image processing.
- Pass the callback URL in the render request. Use the provider’s exact parameter name and async protocol.
- Test delivery and retries. Record event IDs, signatures, response codes and timestamps, and make duplicate deliveries harmless.
Build the receiver route
Node.js and Express example
The following route keeps the raw body for HMAC verification, rejects invalid signatures, and queues a render event after it has been safely parsed. Replace the secret and queue implementation with your own values.

Keep unknown fields so your handler remains forward-compatible. If a provider sends multipart data instead of JSON, use its documented parser and verify the signature over the provider-specified raw representation.

Make the URL publicly reachable
DNS and TLS
- Create an
AorAAAArecord for the hostname and confirm it resolves from outside your network. - Serve HTTPS with a certificate whose hostname exactly matches the callback URL and whose full chain is installed.
- Ensure the route is reachable without a VPN, corporate-only DNS zone or browser login. A temporary tunnel can help development, but use a stable public hostname in production.
ScreenshotMAX states that a webhook must be publicly accessible, accept POST requests and return 2xx. Shotbot requires HTTPS and a callback URL resolving to a public IP. Treat those as provider requirements, not universal assumptions: check the deployment you are using.
Firewalls and reverse proxies
Allow the provider’s documented source ranges where available, but do not block unknown legitimate egress if the provider does not publish fixed addresses. Forward the original method, path and body through your load balancer. Raise the proxy body limit enough for the documented payload, while still enforcing a finite limit at the application.
Authenticate callbacks correctly
Verify a signature before JSON parsing or re-serializing the body. Whitespace, key ordering and character encoding can change a digest. Use constant-time comparison, and reject requests with a missing or malformed signature.

- Shotbot offers a
callback_secret.
Use the exact header spelling, encoding (hex or Base64), signed string and secret format specified by the provider. If timestamps are included, reject stale values and record event IDs to prevent replay. Never put API keys in browser JavaScript, public HTML, repositories or logs.

After signature validation, durably insert the event or publish it to a queue, then return a 2xx response. Do not download a large image, generate thumbnails or call downstream services while the provider is waiting. Non-2xx responses can mark delivery as failed; Shotbot uses upload_failed for this condition. A 202 response is appropriate when the event has been accepted for asynchronous processing, but only after it is safely stored.
Make handling idempotent. Providers may retry after a timeout even when your first attempt succeeded. Deduplicate on the provider’s event ID or render_id, and keep the original payload for support investigations.

Pass the callback URL in the render request
Screenshot API
Use the documented webhook_url parameter. Its asynchronous protocol documents an immediate HTTP 202 response containing a render_id. However, the current Screenshot API guide says async callbacks return HTTP 503 without charging a credit on that deployment and recommends synchronous rendering. Verify the status of your specific deployment before building production dependencies around callbacks.
Other providers
ScreenshotMAX also uses webhook_url and documents signed callbacks. Shotbot uses its callback flow and can send completion or failure notifications. ScreenshotOne documents signature verification and stored file-location data when configured. Field names, retry behavior, payload shape and whether files are hosted or must be downloaded are provider-specific; do not substitute one provider’s assumptions for another’s.

Test and observe the integration
- Deploy the route and send a direct POST from an external machine, not only localhost.
- Trigger the smallest render available and confirm DNS resolution, TLS validation and the exact path.
- Capture the raw request, signature header, response status, event ID and timestamp in redacted logs.
- Send the same event twice and verify that the second delivery does not create duplicate work.
- Send a deliberately invalid signature and confirm a controlled 401 or 403 without queueing.
- Temporarily delay processing to confirm your handler still acknowledges promptly after durable receipt.
Set alerts on sustained non-2xx responses, signature failures, queue growth and missing callbacks. Keep provider response IDs so support teams can correlate an event with your logs.

Troubleshooting callback failures
No request arrives
Check public DNS from a separate network, the certificate chain, firewall and WAF rules, the route spelling, and whether your selected deployment actually supports asynchronous callbacks. For Screenshot API, the documented 503 limitation is a likely explanation.
401, 403 or signature mismatch
Compare the exact header name, secret, digest encoding and signed bytes. Verify the raw body before any framework parser runs. Do not compute the digest over a reserialized JSON object.
The provider reports delivery failure
Inspect your access logs for the callback and confirm the handler returns 2xx before expensive work. A redirect, authentication page, proxy timeout or malformed response can look like a failed webhook even when the route exists.

The screenshot target cannot be captured
The callback only receives a result; it does not grant the screenshot service access to a private target. ScreenshotEngine’s documented behavior, for example, supports public target URLs and does not provide target-site cookies or login scripts. Make the target intentionally public or use the provider’s documented request-authentication features where available.
Payload parsing fails
Confirm whether the provider sends JSON or multipart data, preserve the content type through your proxy, and enforce a size limit that accommodates the documented body. Log field names and types without logging secrets or personal data.
Reliability, performance and cost decisions
- Latency: return after queueing; image downloads and post-processing belong in workers.
- Durability: use a transactional database insert or durable queue before acknowledging.
- Retries: assume at-least-once delivery and deduplicate by event or render ID.
- Security: keep API keys server-side, restrict methods to POST, verify signatures and reject replayed events.
- Storage: determine whether the callback contains a hosted output URL, file-location metadata or an error, and download or copy outputs before provider retention expires.
- Availability: verify that asynchronous callbacks are enabled for your exact provider deployment; a documented feature can still be unavailable on one deployment.
