To run a church’s YouTube stream from a BSNL connection, verify that the channel is eligible for livestreaming, connect an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room with its stream URL and key, and set the stream bitrate below the church’s measured, sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom. Test the connection at the church and at the times it will be used; a BSNL plan’s advertised download speed does not establish its upload speed.
What you need before configuring the stream
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no livestreaming restrictions in the past 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- An encoder, either software on a capable computer or dedicated hardware. YouTube describes both encoder options; hardware can suit higher-production events, but is not a prerequisite for getting started.
- A reliable internet connection at the church, with enough sustained upload bandwidth for the stream and other simultaneous church internet use.
- A plan for monitoring, recovery and recording. A stream intended to run unattended still depends on the encoder, power and broadband continuing to work.
Measure the BSNL connection and choose a starting quality
Measure upload performance at the church, preferably at the times the stream is normally scheduled. Test the connection rather than relying on a plan’s headline download rate. YouTube says total outgoing bitrate must fit available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Other church traffic and any backup stream need capacity too. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

The bitrate recommendations are YouTube’s published H.264 guidance, not measurements of a BSNL line. The upload targets are calculated by adding YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; they are planning figures, not guarantees. BSNL availability, plan terms, fair-use limits and post-cap speeds are local. The BSNL Chennai Telephones plan sheet updated October 1, 2025 is a dated Chennai example, not proof of current offers elsewhere or of upload performance at your church. Use BSNL’s plan portal to check the service area and ask BSNL about the exact plan and line. The broadband customer care number listed in the supplied official materials is 1800-4444; confirm contact details for your area if needed.

Configure YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream and select the encoder workflow. Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s livestream eligibility requirements before the planned broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and key. In Live Control Room, copy the ingest URL and stream key into the corresponding stream settings in the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Use a compatible baseline. Select RTMPS where the encoder supports it, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the stream in transit. Follow the current YouTube encoder preset if your software or hardware offers one. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and RTMPS and encoder workflow guidance.
- Set the output format and bitrate. Begin with 720p30 at the published 4 Mbps H.264 recommendation if the connection is uncertain. Use 1080p30 at 10 Mbps only after sustained upload tests and a stream-health test show the line can support the bitrate plus headroom.
- Run a representative test. Test with the church’s real audio and typical movement in the picture. YouTube recommends testing before going live. Check the preview, audio, picture and stream health, and repeat at the times the stream will usually run.
- Start and monitor the broadcast. Once the preview and stream health look good, start the stream in the encoder and confirm it appears in Live Control Room. Monitor it during operation, particularly if uninterrupted service matters.
Plan for 24/7 operation, archiving and recovery
Do not rely on a single day-long session for a complete archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not guarantee a complete archive for a stream lasting 12 hours or more. If a complete record matters, schedule shorter sessions and keep a local recording as well. YouTube’s guidance also recommends checking local recording files. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Decide who or what will respond to failures
A local encoder can stop because of computer, power or broadband failure. Arrange a way to monitor the stream and recover it; test a backup encoder or failover path if continuous service is important. A UPS sized for the router and streaming computer may help bridge short local power interruptions, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. YouTube documentation does not promise zero interruptions or a particular uptime for a BSNL connection.

Choose latency and viewer controls for the use case
YouTube offers DVR controls that can let viewers pause and rewind when enabled. Lower latency is not automatically preferable for a mostly unattended church feed: YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. Choose the setting based on how viewers will use the stream, then test it under the church’s actual network conditions. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
