To recover a church sermon stream after a brief internet interruption, configure the playout service or encoder to send to the correct scheduled YouTube Live broadcast, enable the encoder’s automatic reconnect option if it has one, and test the recovery workflow. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control broadcast start and stop behavior; they are not encoder reconnect controls. Because playout services differ, use the instructions below as a platform-level checklist rather than assuming a universal menu path.
1. Connect the playout service to the intended YouTube broadcast

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, select the scheduled stream for the service or create one. Confirm the date, title, and event before configuring the encoder.

Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast into the destination or streaming settings of the playout service. The key tells YouTube which feed to accept. Treat it like a password: keep it out of screenshots, volunteer handouts, and public chats.

Confirm the service is configured for that specific scheduled broadcast, not merely for the church’s channel in general. If YouTube’s stream key is reset or replaced, update the key in the playout service too. YouTube documents this requirement in Manage live stream settings.

2. Configure encoder reconnect separately from YouTube start and stop
Enable the playout service’s retry setting
In the playout service or encoder, look for a setting named reconnect, automatic retry, or similar, and enable it if available. The exact label, location, delay, and retry behavior depend on the product and version. Since the service is not specified, verify its documentation or settings rather than relying on a generic menu path.
Choose YouTube auto-start and auto-stop deliberately
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options govern whether encoder actions start or stop a broadcast. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” That describes broadcast lifecycle behavior, not a guarantee that an interrupted encoder will reconnect.
For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow is to start the encoder, wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room, then select Go live. With auto-start enabled, YouTube says the stream can be started from the encoder instead. Reused stream settings copy auto-start and auto-stop selections, so check those values whenever a stream is prepared. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and encoder setup instructions.

Decide in advance how the service should end. YouTube’s scheduled workflow says to click End Stream and stop encoder output to end the broadcast. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive behavior does not replace an orderly shutdown.
3. Rehearse recovery before the service
Use a non-public or otherwise controlled test so an interruption does not disrupt a congregation’s viewing. Verify the actual setup end to end:

Start the playout service and confirm the expected preview appears in Live Control Room. Check both picture and audio.

Follow the intended start procedure: select Go live if the scheduled workflow requires it, or use the configured auto-start behavior.

Briefly interrupt the encoder’s network connection in the controlled test, then restore it. Observe whether the encoder retries and whether its output returns.

Check Live Control Room and the viewer-facing broadcast. Note whether YouTube needs a further manual action after the feed returns.

Test the planned shutdown as well: use the intended YouTube end-stream action and stop the encoder output. Make sure volunteers know which steps apply to this service’s settings.
This is a recommended rehearsal, not a guarantee of recovery. The result can depend on the playout software, network path, and YouTube broadcast state.
4. Troubleshoot a feed that does not return
Check the connection and bitrate
If the encoder reports dropped frames or disconnects, investigate whether the network can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS Project says dropped frames indicate a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames may disconnect the encoder. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, recommends checking bitrate against stable upload speed, trying another ingest server where applicable, reviewing network-related settings, removing VPN or security-software interference, and checking network drivers and hardware. Apply these OBS-specific suggestions only where they fit the software in use.

Try wired Ethernet if the stream relies on Wi-Fi
When a suitable network port and cable are available, test a wired connection. OBS Project recommends wired connectivity for streaming. A cable is an optional troubleshooting step, not a universal requirement or a guarantee of reconnection.
Verify the key and broadcast state

If the stream key was reset, replace the stored key in the playout service and check that it is sending to the intended broadcast.

If encoder output resumes but the broadcast does not, check Live Control Room for the preview and determine whether the scheduled workflow still needs a manual Go live action.

If the feed repeatedly drops, inspect the encoder’s status and network conditions rather than assuming YouTube auto-start or auto-stop will retry the connection.
