For a live stream, “compressing” 1080p video means encoding it at a bitrate your internet connection can sustain while it uploads. First measure your upload speed, then choose a frame rate and bitrate, configure your encoder, and test the actual stream. For YouTube’s H.264 guidance, 1080p at 30 fps has a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended bitrate; at 60 fps, the figures are 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. A minimum is not a guarantee of a stable broadcast. If your connection cannot reliably sustain the applicable minimum, try a lower frame rate or resolution rather than assuming compression settings can make insufficient upload capacity work.

What “compress 1080p for YouTube Live” means

For a live broadcast, your encoder compresses the camera or screen feed in real time and sends that encoded stream to YouTube. The bitrate is the amount of data sent per second. Lowering it can reduce the upload bandwidth the stream needs, but it also changes the stream’s encoded picture quality. A setting cannot compensate for an upload connection that cannot sustain the stream.

This is different from compressing a prerecorded video file before uploading it. YouTube publishes separate guidance for live ingestion and prerecorded uploads; use the live encoder figures below when setting up a broadcast. YouTube’s prerecorded upload page recommends 8 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 1080p uploads and 12 Mbps for high-frame-rate 1080p uploads, but those are upload recommendations, not live-stream settings. YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

What upload speed do you need for 1080p YouTube Live?

Measure upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test your upload bitrate. The figures below are YouTube’s platform guidance for live encoder ingestion, accessed in 2026; they are not measurements of Indian broadband or a guarantee for any individual connection.

Codec 1080p frame rate Listed minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
H.264 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
H.264 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 60 fps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are encoder bitrate values, not required speed-test results that prove your connection will remain stable. Your measured upload rate can vary, and the cited guidance does not prescribe a universal extra percentage to reserve. Treat a speed test as a planning input, then verify the stream under realistic conditions. YouTube’s current encoder guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose a frame rate that fits the connection

At 1080p, 30 fps has lower listed bitrate requirements than 60 fps for both codec groups. If bandwidth is limited and the content does not need the smoother motion of 60 fps, test 30 fps first. This is a practical setting to try, not a promise that it will be stable on a particular scene or connection.

Choose only a codec your encoder supports

YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with different bitrate figures. Do not select a codec solely because its listed bitrate is lower: your encoder must support it, and the cited guidance does not establish the performance or quality gain on your device. If you are unsure, use the codec your encoder and setup support reliably.

Set up the encoder for a bandwidth-conscious test

  1. Measure upload speed. Run a speed test while connected the way you plan to stream. If possible, repeat it at a time and under network conditions similar to the broadcast. Use the upload result, not the download result, to decide whether to attempt the applicable live bitrate.
  2. Select the live resolution and frame rate. Choose 1080p30 or 1080p60 based on the motion needs of your content and the connection you measured. If the applicable minimum is not sustainable, test a lower frame rate or resolution; do not assume 1080p will work merely because the encoder allows it.
  3. Set the video codec and bitrate. Choose a codec supported by your encoder, then set a bitrate appropriate to that codec and the selected 1080p frame rate. YouTube’s listed minimum is a platform figure, not evidence that your individual broadband connection can sustain it.
  4. Use constant bitrate. Set rate control to CBR (constant bitrate), as YouTube recommends. The selected bitrate must be supportable by your upload connection throughout the stream.
  5. Set the keyframe interval. Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. If your encoder presents the interval in frames rather than seconds, use its setting that corresponds to two seconds at your selected frame rate.
  6. Choose the streaming protocol. Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends it for encrypted transport. YouTube also lists RTMP/RTMPS for live encoder streaming.
  7. Send a representative test. Include audio and movement resembling the planned broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the rehearsal and adjust settings if the stream is unstable before relying on it for an important event.

YouTube’s detailed live encoder recommendations, including bitrate, rate control, keyframes, and protocol, are on its encoder settings page.

How to interpret an unstable test

  • The measured upload rate is below the selected bitrate: the connection may not sustain that stream. Try a lower frame rate or resolution and test again; codec settings cannot create upload capacity.
  • The test result looks adequate but stream health is poor: one speed test does not establish sustained stability. Repeat a representative rehearsal and monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages rather than relying on the one result.
  • You are comparing live settings with a file-upload bitrate: make sure you are using the live ingestion guidance. The separate 8 Mbps and 12 Mbps 1080p figures apply to prerecorded video uploads, not live encoder configuration.
  • You are considering a different codec: check that your encoder supports it before switching. The published bitrate table alone does not establish how a particular device will perform.

Copyright and reused-content checks still matter

Correct bitrate and a healthy connection do not determine whether you may broadcast particular video or audio, or whether a channel meets YouTube’s monetization rules. Use content you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable policies for copyright and reused content before building a broadcast around recordings you did not create or license.
