Before uninstalling OneNote for Windows 10, verify that your notebooks have synchronized: removing that app deletes its local data, while cloud notebooks stored in OneDrive or SharePoint are not normally deleted.
Identify which OneNote version is installed
Check Windows 11’s installed-app list and Control Panel. Use this table to choose the right removal method.

Microsoft distinguishes the supported OneNote app on Windows from OneNote for Windows 10. The latter reached end of support on October 14, 2025, is read-only, and is no longer included as an inbox app in current Windows 11 installations, though it may remain on upgraded PCs. Microsoft explains the transition to OneNote on Windows.
Before uninstalling: protect your notes
Open your notebooks in the current OneNote app or at OneNote for the web and confirm that the latest changes are present. Uninstalling OneNote for Windows 10 deletes local data associated with that app, so unsynchronized changes may be lost. A normal app uninstall does not delete cloud notebooks stored in OneDrive or SharePoint. Deleting a cloud notebook is a separate, permanent action; see Microsoft’s instructions for deleting a OneNote notebook.

Method 1: Uninstall OneNote for Windows 10 from Settings
Settings is the normal method for removing the Store version.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find OneNote for Windows 10.
- Select the three-dot button beside the app.
- Select Uninstall and confirm.
You can also open Start > All apps, right-click OneNote for Windows 10, and select Uninstall.
If OneNote for Windows 10 is not listed, the installed copy may instead be the desktop version included with Microsoft 365 or Office. Check the other methods below.
Method 2: Remove the Store package with PowerShell
Use PowerShell only if OneNote for Windows 10 does not uninstall normally or does not appear correctly in Settings. These commands remove the Store/AppX package only, not desktop OneNote installed through Office. Microsoft documents Remove-AppxPackage as the cmdlet for removing AppX packages.
Check whether the package is installed
Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell and run:
Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.Office.OneNote
If Windows returns package information, the package is installed or registered for the current user. This does not tell you whether an Office desktop installation is also present.
Remove it for the current user
Run:
Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.Office.OneNote | Remove-AppxPackage
The exact package name is more precise than a wildcard because it targets Microsoft.Office.OneNote rather than every AppX package containing “OneNote.”

Remove it for all installed users
Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell as administrator, approve the User Account Control prompt, and run:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.Office.OneNote | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsers
The -AllUsers switch requires administrator permission. AppX removal may be irreversible, so verify the package name and user scope before running the command.
These commands do not remove desktop OneNote installed by Microsoft 365 or Office, standalone Microsoft OneNote Home and Student 2016, or notebooks stored outside the app’s package data.
Method 3: Remove desktop OneNote from Microsoft 365 or Office
Desktop OneNote may be part of an Office Click-to-Run installation and may not appear as a separate entry in Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features. Microsoft includes OneNote in Microsoft 365 Apps and Office 2019, Office LTSC 2021, and Office LTSC 2024 deployments. To remove only OneNote and keep the rest of Office, use Microsoft’s Office Deployment Tool (ODT) with an ExcludeApp setting.

Download the Office Deployment Tool from Microsoft and extract it to a folder, such as C:\ODT. The folder should contain Microsoft’s setup.exe.
2. Create an ODT configuration file
In the same folder, create a file named remove-onenote.xml. Use the product ID that matches your Office installation. For Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, for example, use:

For Microsoft 365 Apps for business, replace the product ID with O365BusinessRetail. For Office Home 2024, the product section begins with <Product ID=”Home2024Retail”>. The exclusion line is <ExcludeApp ID=”OneNote” />.
Other supported product IDs include Professional2024Retail and ProPlus2024Retail. Use the ID that matches the installed Office product; the wrong product ID can prevent activation or target the wrong product. 3. Apply the configuration
Open Command Prompt as administrator, change to the ODT folder, and run:
cd C:\ODT
setup.exe /configure remove-onenote.xml
The /configure option applies the XML configuration to the Office installation. Office may show little or no visible progress. When it finishes, check for OneNote again.
Important: match installed Office languages
If the XML lists all languages already installed, its exclusion settings override the previous exclusion settings. If it does not list all installed languages, the new settings are combined with the existing settings. Therefore, an XML file listing only en-us may not reliably override an installation that also has another Office language. Match the installed languages when you intend to enforce the exclusion.
Method 4: Uninstall standalone OneNote from Control Panel
If Control Panel lists Microsoft OneNote Home and Student 2016 as its own product, remove it separately:
- Open Start, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select Microsoft OneNote Home and Student 2016.
- Select Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
- Follow the removal wizard.
If the list contains only a suite such as Microsoft 365 Apps, Microsoft Office Home and Student, or Microsoft Office Professional, removing that entry removes the whole Office product. Use the ODT method if you want to keep the rest of Click-to-Run Office.

Older MSI-based Office installations
The ODT ExcludeApp method is for Click-to-Run deployments and does not remove OneNote from an MSI-based Office installation. For an MSI-based Office suite, try the following if the options are available:
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the Office product and choose Change.
- Choose Add or Remove Features.
- Find OneNote and set it to Not Available.
- Select Continue and allow Office to update.
Choices vary by Office edition and license. If feature-level removal is unavailable, use the supported Office removal procedure or uninstall the whole Office product. Microsoft’s RemoveMSI option is for removing older MSI-based Office products during a newer Click-to-Run Office deployment; it is not a command for removing Click-to-Run OneNote by itself.

You removed a different OneNote version
The Store package and Office desktop app are separate. Removing OneNote for Windows 10 leaves Office OneNote installed, and removing desktop OneNote leaves the Store package installed. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps, Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, and PowerShell with Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.Office.OneNote.

The Start icon is only a shortcut
A pinned Start menu or taskbar icon can remain after the application has been removed. Right-click it and select Unpin from Start or Unpin from taskbar. An icon alone does not prove OneNote is still installed.
A pen, keyboard, or Office integration still points to OneNote
Hardware or Office features may retain a command that launches OneNote. Removing the app does not automatically change every pen-button, keyboard shortcut, or organization-managed Office policy. Reconfigure the affected device or application if the old command produces an error.
Microsoft 365 or an organization reinstalls it
An employer or school may manage Office through Microsoft Intune, Configuration Manager, or another deployment system that reinstalls OneNote. The administrator can exclude it from the deployment. The Microsoft 365 self-service portal does not let users deselect OneNote, so contact your organization’s IT department if the computer is managed. See Microsoft’s OneNote deployment guide.
An Office repair restored it
An Office repair or new Office configuration can add OneNote again if it no longer contains the exclusion. Keep <ExcludeApp ID=”OneNote” /> in the deployment configuration when OneNote should remain excluded.

Verify that OneNote is removed
- Search Start for OneNote.
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for OneNote for Windows 10 and OneNote.
- Check Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features for Microsoft OneNote Home and Student 2016 and Office suites that may contain desktop OneNote.
- Run Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.Office.OneNote in PowerShell.
If PowerShell returns no package and no standalone or Office entry containing OneNote remains, the installed OneNote applications have been removed. A remaining notebook, shortcut, or hardware mapping is separate from the application.
Uninstalling OneNote does not delete cloud notebooks
Removing OneNote and deleting a notebook are different operations. Cloud notebooks stored in OneDrive or SharePoint normally remain after uninstalling the application. Do not delete the notebook folder from OneDrive unless you intend to remove the notebook; deleting a cloud notebook is a separate, permanent action. Before removing OneNote for Windows 10, confirm that notebooks are synchronized and their latest pages appear in the supported OneNote app or OneNote for the web.

Does uninstalling OneNote delete my notebooks?
Uninstalling the app does not normally delete cloud notebooks in OneDrive or SharePoint. However, uninstalling OneNote for Windows 10 deletes its local app data, so verify synchronization first. Deleting a cloud notebook is a separate action.
Why does OneNote still appear after I remove it with PowerShell?
The PowerShell command removes the Microsoft Store/AppX package only. Office may still have the separate desktop OneNote application. Check the Office installation in Control Panel or use the Office Deployment Tool with <ExcludeApp ID=”OneNote” />.

Yes. For a Click-to-Run Microsoft 365 installation, use the Office Deployment Tool with an XML configuration containing <ExcludeApp ID=”OneNote” />. You do not need to uninstall the entire suite.
Is OneNote for Windows 10 still supported?
No. It reached end of support on October 14, 2025 and is read-only. Microsoft recommends using the supported OneNote app on Windows or OneNote for the web.
Why does OneNote reinstall itself?
An Office repair, a new Office configuration, or an organization-managed deployment can reinstall it. For managed devices, an administrator must keep OneNote excluded from the deployment configuration.
