For example: gcc -m32 hello.c -o hello32. The build also needs compatible 32-bit development headers and libraries; the option alone does not install them.
Compile and link a 32-bit program
For a single C source file, run:
gcc -m32 hello.c -o hello32Replace hello.c with your source filename and hello32 with the executable name you want. GCC documents -m32 for x86 targets as generating code that runs in 32-bit mode and setting int, long, and pointer types to 32 bits. See the GNU Project’s x86 options documentation.
If you compile and link in separate steps, specify -m32 on both GCC invocations:
gcc -m32 -c hello.c -o hello.o
gcc -m32 hello.o -o hello32This keeps the object file and the final link in the intended target mode. The option is for GCC’s x86 target; this exact command should not be assumed to apply to other processor architectures.

Install the 32-bit development dependencies
A GCC installation may recognize -m32 but still be unable to produce a working executable. The target needs compatible 32-bit system headers and runtime libraries, and GCC must have the relevant multilib support. On the common x86_64-pc-linux-gnu platform, 32-bit and 64-bit libc headers are usually packaged separately. The package name and installation command depend on your Linux distribution; consult its package documentation for the 32-bit libc development package and any required GCC multilib or runtime package. GCC describes these platform prerequisites in its prerequisites documentation.
GCC’s configuration documentation explains why availability varies: an x86-64 Linux build can provide m32, m64, and mx32 runtime-library variants, while an empty multilib list leaves only the default runtime library. Consequently, the flag can be accepted even when the libraries needed to complete a 32-bit link are unavailable. See GCC configuration options.

If you see gnu/stubs-32.h missing
An error such as fatal error: gnu/stubs-32.h: No such file commonly indicates that the required 32-bit libc development headers are not installed. Install the matching 32-bit libc development package for your distribution, along with GCC multilib/runtime packages if required, and rerun the compile-and-link command. There is no distribution-independent package name or universal installation command.

These effects are specified in GCC’s x86 options documentation. Use -m32 when the program and its libraries require conventional 32-bit x86 mode; -mx32 is not an equivalent substitute.
