For ad revenue from live streams and replays, use the Live filter. Do not use total RPM as a stand-in for ad revenue: it includes several revenue sources and all views, including views without monetized ads.
Compare the two revenue sources in YouTube Studio
- Choose a date range. In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and select the dates you want to compare. Use the same range for both revenue sources.
- Check ad revenue from live content. In Analytics, apply the Live filter when examining revenue from live streams and live replays. YouTube lists Watch Page Ads among its revenue sources.
- Check Shopping earnings. Find Shopping affiliate estimated revenue in the revenue-source breakdown. Eligible creators can earn commissions on qualifying purchases attributed to products tagged in live streams.
- Match the content scope as closely as the reports allow. Compare the same stream or set of content where possible. YouTube’s help documentation describes revenue-source reporting and live/replay ad reporting, but does not establish that every creator can isolate Shopping affiliate revenue for one exact 24/7 stream in precisely the same way as live/replay ad revenue. Check the breakdown available in your channel before treating a figure as stream-specific.
Shopping affiliate revenue and ad revenue are distinct Analytics sources. Compare their estimated totals directly, rather than comparing Shopping revenue with a broader figure that includes unrelated monetization.
Use a fair basis for comparison
Start with matched totals
For a first comparison, put estimated Shopping affiliate revenue and estimated Watch Page Ads revenue side by side for the same dates and content scope. A mismatch—such as comparing all channel Shopping revenue with ad revenue from only one stream—can make either source appear stronger than it is.
Optionally calculate revenue per view or hour
If aligned totals are available, you can calculate your own comparison such as revenue per 1,000 live views or revenue per live hour. Label these as creator-derived calculations, not official YouTube metrics. The result is only as comparable as the underlying revenue and view or time totals.

RPM is not the ad-only figure for this exercise. YouTube defines RPM as revenue after its share per 1,000 views, and it can include ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Supers and other defined sources. It is calculated using all views, including views on which no ad was monetized. As YouTube explains in its Understand ad revenue analytics guidance, “RPM is a useful monetization metric for creators, but it can’t tell your whole revenue story.” Use the Watch Page Ads revenue source for the ad side of this comparison.
Account for estimates, ad delivery and commission changes
- Ad impressions are not continuous just because the stream is. YouTube says, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” A 24-hour broadcast therefore does not mean 24 hours of continuously monetized impressions. See Monetize your live stream.
- Shopping rates can change. Commission rates shown in Studio are estimates based on current rates; the rate in effect when a purchase occurs determines the payout. Do not assume a fixed commission rate across the comparison period. See YouTube Shopping affiliate program overview.
- Affiliate revenue can be revised. Returns and cancellations can affect estimated revenue, and sellers validate commissions on their own schedules. YouTube describes seller lock-in periods as typically 30–90 days, but retailer terms determine the actual timing. Treat estimated Shopping revenue as provisional until validation is complete. - Ad revenue estimates can also change. YouTube notes that estimated partner revenue may be adjusted, including for invalid traffic and claims or disputes. See YouTube Partner earnings overview.
Keep revenue shares in context
YouTube’s current Partner earnings overview states that partners who accept the Watch Page Monetization Module receive 55% of net revenue from Watch Page Ads. That share describes the partner revenue arrangement; it is not a guaranteed ad yield for a 24/7 stream and does not predict how much the stream will earn.

The same overview states that creators receive 70% of net revenues from memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks under the Commerce Product Module. Those fan-funding features are separate from the Shopping affiliate program, so their share should not be confused with a Shopping commission rate.
What to conclude from the comparison
There is no universal winner between Shopping and ads. Your result depends on your channel’s reporting scope, live traffic, whether viewers buy tagged products, the commission rates active when purchases occur, whether ad slots serve ads, and later validation or revenue adjustments. Review matched periods and revisit recent estimates after they have had time to be processed; distinguish the current estimate from validated earnings.
