For a 24/7 stream, the length of the broadcast alone does not establish how much either method will earn. YouTube’s official guidance does not provide an India-specific expected ad RPM, ad fill rate, Shopping conversion rate, or guaranteed earnings comparison for always-on streams.
Check eligibility before estimating either income
Shopping affiliate eligibility in India
India is listed as a supported country for YouTube’s Shopping affiliate program, but availability in the country does not mean every channel qualifies. YouTube lists YPP membership and meeting the applicable YPP subscriber threshold among the baseline requirements. Channel and audience restrictions also apply, including music-related exclusions and Made for Kids limitations. Check the Earn or Shopping area in YouTube Studio for your channel’s current status and the current program terms.
Ad monetization eligibility
Livestream ad revenue is a YPP monetization feature with its own eligibility conditions. YouTube’s monetization features can have separate requirements and may not be available to every channel. Check your channel’s Earn area rather than assuming that eligibility for one feature automatically grants eligibility for the other.

Calculate a fair, channel-specific comparison
Use the same reporting window and, as far as your analytics allow, the same stream and audience context. Keep the results as observed earnings, not a forecast based on assumed rates.
- Choose a matched period. Select a date range that YouTube Studio reports for both Shopping and livestream ads. If the reporting or attribution windows differ, note that limitation rather than treating the totals as perfectly synchronized.
- Estimate Shopping commissions from attributed purchases. Group eligible attributed purchases by item or merchant and apply the commission rate that was in effect on each purchase date. Include other eligible products from the same merchant when YouTube attributes them to a viewer following your product tag; do not count only the item you tagged by default.
- Use purchase-date rates. YouTube states, “Your commission payout reflects the rate on the day of each purchase, not the date you tagged the product.” A rate displayed when you add a tag is an estimate of the current rate, not a promise that the rate will still apply when a viewer buys.
- Take ad income from the stream’s actual report. Use reported ad revenue for the selected period. Do not estimate it by multiplying 24 hours by a general RPM or assumed fill rate: an ad opportunity can go unserved, and the official material does not establish a universal India-specific rate.
- Compare like with like. Compare each method’s observed revenue for the matched period. If your analytics support it, also calculate revenue per comparable live hour or day. This is a practical comparison method, not a YouTube-published earnings formula.
- Separate past results from expectations. A purchase-heavy period, a temporary merchant rate, or a change in ad settings may not recur. Treat historical totals as results for that period, not as guaranteed future income.

How live Shopping tags and ad settings affect the comparison
Make tagged products relevant and disclose commissions
YouTube’s live Shopping guidance allows creators to tag products in livestreams. Choose products that fit the stream and that you genuinely believe in, and tell viewers when you may earn a commission. Review the current commission rate and eligibility in YouTube Studio before tagging; rates differ by item and merchant and can change.
Understand the live ad formats
On monetized livestreams with monetization enabled, pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled. Mid-roll ads can be inserted automatically or manually. The availability of these formats does not mean every potential slot will serve an ad.

YouTube reports that creators who chose live automatic mid-rolls saw, on average, “over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour.” This is a platform-reported average, not a forecast for an individual channel, an India-specific result, or a 24/7-stream guarantee.
What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show which source produced more reported revenue for your channel in the selected period. That is more useful than a generic rate when deciding what to test next.
- It cannot establish a permanent winner from one short period. Shopping depends on purchases and changing commission rates; ads depend on actual delivery and may vary across periods.
- It cannot prove that running for 24 hours increases either income. The official guidance cited here does not establish a revenue advantage caused by a 24/7 schedule itself.
- It should not be generalized to other channels in India. The official sources do not supply a guaranteed or India-specific earnings-per-hour comparison between Shopping commissions and livestream ads.
Keeping a YouTube stream live
Stream uptime and monetization are separate questions: keeping a stream online does not guarantee product purchases or served ads. If you use an uploaded-video loop for a YouTube channel, you are responsible for the stream’s content and applicable YouTube rules.
