Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

You can do this in a browser test runner such as Playwright, through a hosted visual-testing service, or with an HTTP screenshot-diff API when both versions of the page are available at stable URLs.
A screenshot comparison catches visual changes—such as shifted layouts, altered spacing, or changed colors—that a passing functional test may not reveal. It complements, rather than replaces, tests of interactions and business logic.
Choose how to capture and compare screenshots
The right approach depends on where your baseline lives, how you review changes, and whether you need a browser test or a URL-to-URL API. These approaches overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
| Approach | Capture and integration | Baseline and review | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local test-runner screenshots | Browser automation runs in your test suite. | Baselines are often stored and reviewed with the project; test artifacts and code review handle inspection. | Code-managed suites where the team can run and maintain the rendering environment. |
| Hosted visual testing | Framework or CI integration may be combined with vendor-managed rendering. | A dedicated visual review and approval workflow may be included; details vary by product and plan. | Teams that want centrally managed review, collaboration, or broader rendering coverage. |
| HTTP screenshot-diff API | An HTTP request submits before-and-after URLs if the endpoint supports the needed page state. | Baseline ownership varies. Your CI or reporting system may need to retain and present the result and diff. | Pipelines where both states are already reachable by URL and a direct API response fits. |
For a documented local workflow, Playwright Test provides expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). A URL-to-URL HTTP workflow is a different model: SnapshotFlow documents one example through its /diff endpoint, but its parameters and behavior should not be assumed for other APIs. Hosted product capabilities should likewise be checked against the specific service and plan. Playwright visual comparisons, SnapshotFlow’s API workflow, and UI Verify’s vendor-authored comparison describe their respective approaches.

Set up a Playwright baseline
Playwright’s screenshot assertion works with the Playwright test runner. It can compare a page or a locator to a reference image, and options can control aspects such as format, animation handling, masking, and difference tolerances. On the first run, Playwright writes a reference image; subsequent runs compare new captures against it. The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the last capture. That initial file is only a starting point—not evidence that the page looks correct.
Install and write a minimal test
In a project using Playwright Test, create a test such as tests/landing.visual.spec.ts:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('landing page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.png');
});
Use your actual page URL and test data. The test captures the page after navigation; for pages that load content asynchronously, add the appropriate page setup and waits before the assertion rather than relying on navigation alone.

Review and update the reference
- Run the test once to generate the initial reference image.
- Open and review that image. If it represents the intended design, commit it with the test so the baseline can be reviewed alongside code changes.
- Run the test in CI and inspect both the new capture and diff when it reports a visual mismatch.
- If a design change is intentional, use the Playwright test runner’s snapshot-update command to update the reference, then inspect the image change in version control before merging.
A bulk baseline update is not proof that the new visuals are correct. Review the changed images just as you would review a code change. See the Playwright visual-comparison documentation and PageAssertions API for assertion behavior and options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMake the rendered page repeatable
A comparison is useful only if the test distinguishes meaningful UI changes from differences caused by the rendering environment or volatile content. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors.
Pin the environment and page inputs
- Generate baselines and current screenshots in the same pinned CI environment where practical.
- Keep the browser build, viewport dimensions, device scale, locale, timezone, color scheme, fonts, and test data consistent.
- Use stable test data and authentication so the same content and permissions appear on each run.
- Wait for required content, fonts, and asynchronous data to settle before capturing. Playwright’s assertion waits for consecutive captures to match and disables animations by default, but external or dynamic content can still vary.
Scope or mask content that is not under test
If timestamps, ads, rotating content, caret state, or third-party widgets are irrelevant to the test, mask those regions or apply a test-only stylesheet. Capture a locator rather than the whole page when only a stable component matters. Microsoft Learn demonstrates masking a dynamic grid column and recommends scoping capture to the relevant component in its advanced testing example.

Calibrate difference tolerances
Playwright supports pixel-count and threshold controls. Treat them as sensitivity settings, not as a way to hide defects. Microsoft Learn’s sample uses maxDiffPixelRatio: 0.01 and threshold: 0.2 as example values, not universal defaults. Calibrate against representative pages, inspect actual diff output, and use tighter checks for high-risk areas such as navigation, checkout, and core forms. The Playwright documentation explains screenshot comparison options.
Use an HTTP screenshot-diff endpoint
A direct HTTP diff API can suit a CI job when the “before” and “after” states already exist at stable, reachable URLs and the endpoint can render them as required. SnapshotFlow documents this pattern for its /diff endpoint. It is not the same as a typical test-runner flow: a test runner captures the current UI, while the baseline may be stored with the project or managed by a visual-testing service.

- Pin the viewport and make page state deterministic, including test data and authentication.
- Confirm the endpoint’s behavior for login, network access, cookies, waits, timeouts, and sensitive content before sending private pages to a hosted renderer.
- Check which browser and rendering environment the API uses; do not assume another provider uses the same behavior or options.
- Retain the raw diff image and machine-readable result with the build or pull request so a person can review what changed.
- Define what response or result should fail CI, and provide a review path before accepting a baseline change.
SnapshotFlow’s page documents its own endpoint and underlying implementation claims; those specifics do not establish the behavior, limits, or deployment options of other screenshot APIs. For systems that cannot send render traffic to a public service, verify whether the intended provider and product version support a suitable self-hosted deployment. See SnapshotFlow’s API workflow.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits
If you need an HTTP screenshot rather than a comparison engine, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API does not replace baseline storage, diff calculation, or human review: your CI workflow still needs to compare captures and decide whether to accept a change. Its clean-capture steps can help when consent banners and other overlays would otherwise obscure the page.
ScreenshotNeo accepts the parameter names other screenshot APIs use, which can make switching easier. Its feature set includes full-page capture with lazy images loaded, selector-based element capture, viewport and device presets, retina scale, waits, custom CSS and JavaScript, headers and cookies, and options for blocking requests or resource types. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Or skip the browser setup
For a straightforward capture, send one GET request. Replace the target URL with the page you want to render:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
For visual regression, capture the same state consistently, save the image as a build artifact, and compare it with your approved baseline using your chosen diff workflow. ScreenshotNeo’s API response identifies the page verdict and billing status in response headers.

Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Many unrelated pixels change between runs | Different browser or host environment, viewport, fonts, locale, or device scale. | Pin the rendering environment and align the viewport and other rendering inputs between baseline generation and CI. |
| Only a timestamp, ad, caret, or third-party region differs | Volatile content is included in the captured region. | Mask it, use a test-only stylesheet, or capture a narrower locator if that content is not the test’s subject. |
| The page is captured before data or fonts are ready | The test reaches the screenshot assertion before the intended state is stable. | Wait for the required content, fonts, or application-specific readiness condition; confirm external data is deterministic. |
| A visual change passes despite being important | The diff tolerance is too permissive or the capture includes too much unrelated noise. | Review the configured threshold and pixel allowance against real diffs; scope or mask noise rather than broadly loosening checks. |
| A URL-based API cannot render a private or authenticated page | The endpoint may not have the necessary network access, cookies, or authentication mechanism. | Verify the provider’s supported access controls and security model before sending private page content; do not assume support from another API’s documentation. |
| CI reports a mismatch after a deliberate redesign | The approved baseline still represents the old design. | Review the new capture and diff, then update the reference through the project’s normal approval process. |
Keep visual regression in its proper role
A passing screenshot check says the rendered image is within the comparison rules you configured; it does not prove that forms submit, links work, or business logic is correct. Keep functional and integration tests alongside visual checks. Choose local baselines, hosted review, or an HTTP diff workflow based on baseline ownership, review needs, rendering coverage, and how your CI pipeline can handle artifacts. The Percy and Applitools product pages describe their own hosted offerings; product-specific coverage and plan details should be verified directly.
