Compare the unit price—not just the shelf price or pack size—to see which of two similar products costs less for the same amount. Check that both prices use the same basis, such as price per kilogram, litre or item, then weigh the saving against the total checkout cost and how much you can use.
How to compare unit prices
- Choose genuinely comparable products. Compare products with a similar purpose and relevant type or format. A shared measurement alone does not make two products equivalent.
- Find the unit price. Look beside or below the total price on the shelf label, or on the online listing. It may be shown per kilogram, 100 grams, litre, 100 millilitres or item, depending on the product and local display conventions.
- Match the basis. Compare weight with weight, volume with volume, or count with count. If the labels use different bases, convert them to a common quantity before deciding.
- Compare the unit prices. The lower figure means a lower cost for the same comparable quantity. It does not automatically mean the product is the better choice for your needs.
- Check the total spend and quantity. A lower unit price may come with a higher pack price or more product than you can store or use. Consider the amount you will pay at checkout and the likelihood of waste.
The UK Competition and Markets Authority put the basic idea simply: “Comparing unit prices can help you choose the best value product.” CMA guidance for consumers explains unit pricing as a way to compare products sold in different quantities.
Which unit should you compare?
Use the measure that fits the product and is stated consistently for the options you are comparing. Common bases include price per kilogram or per 100 grams for weight, price per litre or per 100 millilitres for volume, and price per item for countable goods. UK guidance also identifies measures such as metre, square metre or cubic metre where appropriate.

Calculate a unit price if the label does not show one
Use this formula, keeping the package quantity and price in consistent units:
Price per chosen standard quantity = (selling price ÷ package quantity) × standard quantity

- Digital kitchen scale with food-safe, BPA-free plastic components
- Stainless steel platform with wide LCD screen
- Weighs up to 11 pounds (2 grams minimum, up to about 5000 grams); displays results in pounds, ounces, grams, fluid ounces, and ml
- Tare button for measuring just the food, minus the container weight
- Battery operated; (2) AAA batteries included
For example, to find the price per 100 g for a 500 g pack, divide its price by 500, then multiply by 100. You can convert one label’s figure to match the other’s if both packages give quantities that support a fair comparison. A basic calculator can help with the arithmetic, but it is not needed for routine comparisons when a clear unit price is already displayed.
Worked examples
In a UK government example, cereal priced at £3 for 500 g works out to £6/kg; cereal priced at £3 for 2 kg works out to £1.50/kg. These figures show why two packs with the same total price can have very different costs per quantity. The government guidance gives the example and explains unit-price measures.

A separate CMA example compares orange juice: 600 ml at 95p is 15.8p per 100 ml; 1 L at £2.00 is 20p per 100 ml; and 1.5 L at £3.50 is 23.3p per 100 ml. In that example, the smallest pack has the lowest unit price, so choosing the largest container would not give the lowest cost per 100 ml.
How to compare promotions and bulk buys
Use the offer’s actual price and the quantity you will receive. If a promotional unit price is displayed, compare it with the regular or competing unit price on the same basis. If not, calculate it from the promotion price and the offer quantity; do not infer a saving from a “sale” label, multi-buy format or larger pack alone.

Promotional display rules vary by jurisdiction. UK guidance says traders should endeavour to display unit prices for promotions where feasible, while also describing exemptions. A missing promotional unit price is not, by itself, proof that an offer is good or bad: calculate the cost per comparable quantity when the necessary price and quantity information is available.
What unit price can—and cannot—tell you
Unit pricing makes different pack sizes easier to compare. A larger pack may cost more per unit than a smaller one, and a lower unit price can help identify which option is cheaper per comparable amount. It does not establish which product is higher quality, better suited to you, more affordable at checkout or likely to be fully used.

The UK CMA reported that around half of the shoppers who took part in a qualitative consumer study used unit pricing to varying degrees. The CMA described that finding as indicative rather than representative, so it should not be read as the share of all UK shoppers. The CMA’s 2024 consumer research discusses how participants used unit prices, including for promotions and bulk purchases.

Quick Recap
- United Kingdom: Government guidance on the amended Price Marking Order describes the applicable measures and exceptions. It says shops with a relevant floor area of no more than 280 square metres are excluded from some requirements for pre-packaged products sold in constant quantities; rules differ for bulk products. The guidance also says traders should endeavour to show promotional unit prices where feasible. This is a practical summary, not legal advice. Read the UK government guidance.
- Australia: The ACCC says most supermarkets, large grocery stores and online grocery stores must display unit pricing in store, online and in advertising, subject to rules covering businesses, locations and products. Its guidance gives examples of weight, volume and per-item measures. See the ACCC’s consumer guidance.
- Canada: A federal Office of Consumer Affairs page modified on 4 March 2024 said unit pricing was not generally mandatory across the Canadian marketplace outside Quebec at that time, although some retailers displayed it voluntarily. That is a date-bounded description; check current provincial rules before relying on it as a statement of present law. Read the federal information.
