To compare two webpage screenshots, capture the page in matching conditions, then compare the new image with an accepted baseline. Playwright Test can create and check screenshot baselines with expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(); its test output includes a visual diff when an image does not match. Review the highlighted areas to decide whether the change is a bug or an intended update before replacing the baseline.

What a screenshot comparison can—and cannot—tell you

A visual comparison checks rendered pixels, not the meaning or correctness of the page. It can show that text moved, a color changed, an image disappeared, or a component shifted. It cannot decide whether that difference is expected. A person still needs to inspect the changed region and approve or reject the result.

Start by deciding what you are comparing: the same page before and after a code change, two deployment environments, or the page across browsers and operating systems. For ordinary regression testing, match the capture setup. If cross-browser behavior is the point, keep a separate expected baseline for each browser and platform rather than treating every rendering difference as a defect.

Make the two captures comparable

For a useful diff, control the conditions that can affect rendering:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Browser and version: use the same browser build for baseline and subsequent runs.
  • Operating system and rendering environment: fonts, native controls, scrollbars, hardware, power source and headless mode can affect screenshots.
  • Viewport and scale: keep the viewport dimensions and device scale factor consistent.
  • Page state: use the same route, content, account state, scroll position and interaction state.
  • Timing: wait for the page to settle and for relevant content to load. Animations, rotating content and live data can create noise.

Playwright notes that screenshot output may vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. Keep baselines in the same environment as the tests whenever possible. If a project intentionally tests multiple environments, maintain environment-specific baselines.

Compare screenshots with Playwright Test

Playwright Test is a practical option when you already use Playwright and want assertions plus reference images managed with the project. The first run creates a baseline; later runs compare a new capture against it. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide and SnapshotAssertions API for current assertion details.

1. Install and configure a test

In an existing Playwright Test project, add a test such as this. Replace the URL with the page you want to check:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('homepage matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
  await page.goto('http://localhost:3000', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});

The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the final image with the expected one. This reduces failures caused by a page that is still changing at capture time, but it does not make genuinely dynamic content deterministic.

2. Create the baseline

Run the test once in the environment you intend to use for future comparisons:

npx playwright test

On the first run, Playwright stores the reference screenshot. Review it and keep the generated baseline with the project so teammates and CI can compare against the same accepted image.

3. Run the comparison and inspect the diff

After a page change, run the test again. If the image differs beyond the configured tolerance, the assertion fails and Playwright produces comparison output, including a diff image. Open the test report or image artifacts and inspect the changed area alongside the expected and actual screenshots. A mismatch is a prompt to review, not a verdict that the change is wrong.

4. Update only an approved baseline

If the visual change is intentional and correct, update the stored reference after review:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots

Do not update snapshots simply to make a failing test pass. First determine what changed and whether the new appearance is acceptable.

Reduce noise without hiding real regressions

Use thresholds with reviewed examples

Playwright visual comparisons use pixelmatch and let you configure a pixel-difference threshold or maximum number of changed pixels. These controls can absorb minor rendering variation, but a permissive threshold can also hide small defects. Choose a tolerance by examining representative diffs from your own page and environment; do not assume one value works for every component.

Neutralize known volatile regions

If a specific region changes unpredictably—such as a timestamp or live ticker—use Playwright’s screenshot stylesheet support to hide or neutralize that content during capture. Keep the exclusion narrow. Broadly masking a region can conceal a layout break or missing content that the test should catch. The screenshot assertion options are documented in the visual comparisons guide.

Separate intentional environment differences

Fonts, native controls and scrollbars can differ across browsers and operating systems. When those differences are expected or are specifically under test, compare each browser/platform combination with its own approved baseline. Do not loosen thresholds across the board to make unrelated environments appear identical.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one GET request. For example, save a WebP screenshot of the page under test:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It can accept cookie/consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers. Troubleshooting visual test failures

  • The test fails on CI but passes locally: check browser version, operating system, headless mode, fonts, viewport and device scale factor. Run baseline creation and comparison in the same environment, or maintain separate baselines for intentionally different environments.
  • The diff highlights content that changes on every run: identify whether it is animation, live data or a late-loading element. Stabilize the page state or narrowly hide that region with a screenshot stylesheet.
  • The screenshot is captured before the page is ready: wait for the relevant content or selector, and make page data deterministic. networkidle can help for pages that become idle, but ongoing requests may prevent it from being a suitable readiness condition.
  • Too many tiny differences fail the assertion: inspect the diff, verify the environment first, then adjust the threshold or changed-pixel limit cautiously. Avoid increasing tolerance before ruling out a real shift.
  • A large change appears after a legitimate redesign: review the affected regions and expected screenshot, then update the baseline only after approval.
  • Cross-browser screenshots disagree: first decide whether the test is checking regressions within one browser or intended behavior across browsers. Use matching baselines for the former and environment-specific baselines for the latter.

Frequently asked questions

Does Playwright create an image showing what changed?

Yes. When a screenshot assertion fails, Playwright’s test output includes visual comparison artifacts such as a diff image so you can locate pixel-level changes.

Can I compare an element instead of the whole page?

Yes. Playwright screenshot assertions can target an element, which is useful when a test concerns one component and the rest of the page is irrelevant.

Should I use a screenshot diff for cross-browser testing?

Use it, but interpret the result against the browser and operating system being tested. Rendering differences may be expected; environment-specific baselines make them easier to distinguish from regressions.
