Compare providers against your mission—not just the rocket’s advertised payload capacity. Orbit and inclination, payload dimensions, deployment needs, launch date, launch site, licensing responsibilities and contract terms all affect whether a service is a fit. Public sources checked on 3 October 2026 do not provide a like-for-like price list or firm customer schedule, so buyers should seek comparable, mission-specific written proposals.

Start with the mission requirements

Before shortlisting launch providers, define what the satellite must do and when it must be in orbit. A capacity figure alone cannot establish whether a launcher can deliver your payload to the required orbit or accommodate it safely.

  • Orbit: Specify altitude and inclination, including whether the mission needs a sun-synchronous, polar or other orbit. Ask for the vehicle’s capability for your exact mission, rather than relying on a broad label such as low Earth orbit.
  • Payload: Give mass, dimensions, centre-of-gravity information and any constraints on the payload envelope. Ask about interface, environmental limits, encapsulation and integration requirements.
  • Deployment: State the required separation interface, deployment sequence and any timing or pointing constraints. Clarify whether the provider offers a dedicated launch or a rideshare arrangement and what control you have over deployment.
  • Schedule: Identify the latest useful delivery date and the consequences of missing it. Ask which milestones must be met before a date can be committed, whether range or airspace windows are secured, and what rebooking or cancellation remedies apply.
  • Operations and logistics: Establish where integration takes place, how the payload will be transported, what customer access is permitted, and which party coordinates the launch campaign.

Use the same mission assumptions in every request for proposal. Otherwise, headline capacity and price may describe materially different services.

Separate demonstrated service from plans and targets

Launch claims belong on an evidence ladder: a planned design or capacity target is not a completed flight; a flight test is not necessarily an orbital insertion; and one successful orbital flight does not by itself establish repeat operational service. Record the vehicle configuration, milestone and date behind each claim.

The table below summarizes what the official sources cited here establish, rather than ranking providers. Figures described as targets are not demonstrated customer payload deliveries.

Provider or programme Publicly stated capability or milestone What a buyer should infer
Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA One) ESA’s 27 August 2026 announcement gives a current-configuration target of up to 500 kg to a 500 km sun-synchronous orbit and says the vehicle is intended to launch from a SaxaVord pad in the UK. ESA announcement, 27 August 2026 This is a target and intended site, not evidence in that announcement of delivered payloads or an available customer slot.
Isar Aerospace (Spectrum) ESA’s 27 August 2026 announcement gives a target of up to 1,000 kg to low Earth orbit and says Spectrum’s first flight in 2025 from Andøya Spaceport, Norway, lasted 30 seconds. ESA announcement, 27 August 2026 The cited milestone is a first flight, not a stated successful orbital insertion or repeat operational service.
PLD Space (MIURA 5) ESA says PLD Space plans upgraded MIURA 5 capabilities for institutional and commercial missions needing greater payload capacity and orbital reach; the announcement does not state a comparable numerical target. ESA announcement, 27 August 2026 Request the exact vehicle configuration, orbit and payload performance offered for your mission.
Skyrora (XL) Skyrora describes XL as a three-stage small-satellite launch vehicle intended for sun-synchronous orbit. Its product page also lists suborbital Skylark vehicles and an in-space tug, which are different product categories. Skyrora products Do not treat a suborbital vehicle or an in-space tug as an orbital launch service equivalent to XL.
HyImpulse UK The CAA register lists a vertical launch operator licence for HyImpulse UK Limited dated 1 October 2026. The register does not state vehicle capacity or a customer launch schedule. CAA licence register The licence listing is a regulatory milestone; ask separately for vehicle, orbit, flight evidence and availability.
Orbex Prime / Space Hub Sutherland The UK Government spaceport guide describes Space Hub Sutherland as a vertical site with polar and sun-synchronous access and lists planned Orbex Prime departures. UK Government spaceport guide A planned departure in a guide is not confirmation of current site readiness, a provider’s customer offer or a bookable mission date.

The European Space Agency’s European Launcher Challenge (ELC) page lists Isar Aerospace, Maiaspace, Orbital Express Launch, PLD Space and Rocket Factory Augsburg as first-stage shortlisted providers; it records that Orbital Express Launch entered administration and withdrew in February 2026. The page sets programme milestones for orbital launch by 2027, operational ramp-up support after that, and a capacity-upgrade orbital demonstration by 2028. These are programme milestones, not guarantees for any company or customer mission. ESA European Launcher Challenge

Check launch site and orbit access together

A site’s location, launch mode and permitted trajectories affect which missions are practical. The UK Government guide describes SaxaVord in Unst, Shetland, as a vertical launch site with sun-synchronous and polar-orbit access; it also gives a spaceport-level capacity figure of up to 1,000 kg. That figure is not a vehicle-specific payload promise. The same guide describes Space Hub Sutherland as a vertical site with polar and sun-synchronous access. Treat guide entries and planned departures as planning information, then verify current site status, range arrangements, approvals and provider availability directly. UK Government spaceport guide

When assessing a proposal, ask whether the stated orbit is available from the proposed site for the relevant launch window, and who is responsible for range coordination, airspace approvals and payload transport. A site’s stated access to an orbit does not prove a particular vehicle can serve your mission or has a slot available.

Clarify who holds licences and carries obligations

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) register lists vertical launch operator licences for Rocket Factory Augsburg AG (14 January 2025), Skyrora Limited (24 July 2025) and HyImpulse UK Limited (1 October 2026). Those register entries establish that licences were listed on the register; they do not establish successful orbital service, commercial availability or a customer-ready date. CAA licence register

For UK launch-operator applications under the Space Industry Act, the CAA identifies a safety case, an assessment of environmental effects, and security and cybersecurity material among the requirements. Its guidance says assessment takes at least nine months after the CAA receives an application, and notes that airspace change approvals may take longer. The CAA lists no charge for a launch or return licence. These are regulatory process details, not a forecast of an individual provider’s launch date. CAA launch licensing

Ask the provider to identify who is responsible for each relevant authorisation. CAA guidance says UK orbital activity is covered by the Space Industry Act 2018, while activity from outside the UK is covered by the Outer Space Act 1986. Where different parties operate a satellite and procure its launch, each may need a separate orbital-operator licence. Confirm the rules for the actual mission, parties and operating location with the CAA. CAA orbital-operator guidance

Request comparable commercial terms

The official sources reviewed here do not establish a comparable current price list or firm mission-specific schedule across providers. Ask each shortlisted provider to quote against the same payload, orbit, delivery date and service scope; compare assumptions and exclusions alongside the headline price.

Ask for the following in writing:

  • Scope and price basis: What is included—launch, integration, encapsulation, testing, campaign support and deployment—and what is charged separately?
  • Payment and cancellation: What are the payment milestones, cancellation rights, refund terms and consequences of a customer-caused delay?
  • Schedule remedies: Which date is contractually committed, what conditions qualify it, and what happens if the provider or site misses a milestone or launch window?
  • Risk allocation: How are insurance, liability, safety, environmental, security and debris-related obligations allocated between parties?
  • Continuity and contingencies: What are the options if the vehicle, launch site, range window or payload integration is unavailable, and can the payload be transferred to another mission or provider?
  • Data and access: What telemetry, mission data and launch-campaign access will the customer receive, and when?
  • Export and regulatory controls: Which party handles applicable export controls and licence applications, and what customer information or approvals are required?

Use a mission-specific shortlist, not a league table

For each candidate, record the requested mission and the evidence supporting the offer. A useful comparison sheet includes:

  1. Exact vehicle configuration, payload mass and envelope, target orbit, inclination and deployment arrangement.
  2. Evidence level for that configuration: development target, test flight, orbital insertion or repeat operational service, with source and date.
  3. Proposed launch site, current site status, range and airspace arrangements, and integration logistics.
  4. Contracted date versus planning estimate, pre-launch milestones, delay remedies and contingency options.
  5. Price scope, exclusions, insurance, liability and allocation of regulatory responsibilities.

Mark unknowns as open questions rather than assuming that a capacity target, licence listing or planned departure answers them. Because programmes, licences and site operations can change quickly, verify the vehicle configuration, corporate status, licence position and schedule directly before committing.
