Military helicopter speed and range figures are comparable only when you check what each source actually measures. A listed “speed” is not necessarily a top speed or a cruise speed, and range figures may use different assumptions. Start with the exact aircraft variant and metric label, then compare the conditions and qualifications alongside the numbers.
Top speed and cruise speed are different measures
A maximum-speed figure describes a peak performance point; a cruise-speed figure describes a speed associated with cruising. They are not interchangeable. Sources may also use a less specific label such as “Speed,” which does not establish whether the number is maximum or cruise speed.
For example, the U.S. Air Force HH-60G fact sheet lists “Speed: 184 mph (159 knots)” without calling it maximum or cruise speed. The 127th Wing, U.S. Air National Guard, labels the CH-47F figure “Max cruise speed: 160 knots.” Those labels are materially different, so the figures should not be presented as a clean top-speed comparison.
Compare the exact variant and preserve the source’s conditions
Helicopter performance varies by variant and by the conditions attached to a specification. Record the source’s wording and note any stated altitude, temperature, aircraft weight, power setting, and airspeed convention. Do not transfer a condition from one variant or document to another.

- Create this cornerstone of American military with this 139-piece model kit
- Kit features choice of outboard mini guns or rockets, two flight crew figures, separate doors, extensive detail, and two sets of decals
- Model scale 1:32
- Recommended for ages 12 years and older
- Paint and glue are sold separately
The hosted UH-60M performance table labels cruise-speed figures with altitude, temperature, weight, and power-setting conditions. A Little Rock Air Force safety pamphlet separately gives UH-60 cruise speed in KTAS and low-level airspeed in KIAS. KTAS is knots of true airspeed; KIAS is knots of indicated airspeed. Those conventions and operating contexts should remain visible when comparing values.
Official figures illustrate why the labels matter
The following examples are published figures, not a standardized test across aircraft. “Not stated” means the cited specification does not provide that detail in the material summarized here.

Read range as a separate, qualified figure
Range is not another way of expressing speed. It describes distance under the assumptions behind that source’s figure, and the cited specifications do not provide a common payload, fuel-reserve, atmospheric, mission-profile, or test methodology for all these aircraft. Therefore, the listed figures cannot be normalized into a definitive operational-range ranking.

The HH-60W fact sheet gives 599 nautical miles and notes that the aircraft is air-refuelable. The HH-60G fact sheet lists 504 nautical miles but does not state equivalent range assumptions in its cited specification block. Do not treat these numbers as a like-for-like range test or interpret the HH-60W figure as its total possible distance with refueling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical method for comparing specifications
- Identify the exact aircraft variant. Do not compare a family name when one source specifies a particular variant.
- Copy the metric label. Keep “maximum speed,” “maximum cruise speed,” “cruise speed,” and “speed” distinct.
- Keep the original units and airspeed convention. Preserve mph, knots, or nautical miles as published, and identify indicated or true airspeed if the source does.
- Capture operating conditions. Include altitude, temperature, weight, and power setting when supplied; mark missing details as not stated.
- Assess range independently. Record the range value and any stated assumptions, including air-refueling qualifications.
- Limit the conclusion to what matches. If sources use different labels or conditions, call the comparison indicative rather than ranking aircraft as if they had been measured on the same basis.
These official examples show how to read published specifications; they do not establish which military helicopter is fastest or has the longest range overall. Such a ranking would require a defined aircraft set and comparable conditions.
