Compare headphones on three separate questions: do they stay comfortable during the time you will wear them, does their sound suit what you listen to, and do they reduce the noises you actually need to avoid? A good result in one area does not guarantee a good result in the others. Use review measurements as supporting evidence, then try the headphones with your own fit, listening material, and environment.

Compare fit and comfort over a realistic listening session

Appearance and weight alone do not tell you whether a pair will feel comfortable. Wear each candidate for a period similar to your usual listening session, and pay attention to where pressure builds.

  • Check for pressure from the headband and around your ears. For in-ear headphones, check whether the tips fit securely without becoming uncomfortable.
  • Adjust the headband or earbuds so they sit stably. A loose fit can shift during use; an overly tight fit can become tiring.
  • Notice whether the earcups or tips remain comfortable as you move and listen, not just during a quick try-on.

Consumer Reports includes fit among the dimensions it evaluates when testing headphones. Fit also affects technical comparisons: RTINGS says it reseats over-ear and on-ear headphones multiple times when measuring sound profiles, because placement and seal can change results. See Consumer Reports’ headphone buying guide and RTINGS’ sound-profile testing method.

Judge sound with familiar music and speech

Use music you know well and spoken-word audio, such as a podcast, to compare candidates. Listen for tonal balance and clarity, and decide whether the presentation is enjoyable for the material and use you have in mind. Keep the listening material and volume as consistent as practical when switching between pairs.

Frequency-response graphs and sound-profile tests can help describe how headphones reproduce sound, but they are not a universal ranking of which pair sounds best. Listeners can prefer different sound signatures, and a change in headphone position or seal can affect measured response. Treat measurements as context for your listening, rather than a substitute for it.

Test noise cancellation against the sounds that matter to you

Noise reduction depends on the kind of sound and the fit. Try headphones with noise cancellation in conditions relevant to your routine, such as a steady low rumble, nearby voices, or wind, rather than assuming one broad claim predicts performance in every setting.

Soundcore by Anker Q20i Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones, White
  • Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
  • Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
  • 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
  • Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
  • Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.

Separate passive isolation, which comes from the physical seal between the headphones and your ears, from active noise cancellation, which uses an electronic system to reduce noise. Both can affect what you hear. RTINGS’ testing methodology covers different noise conditions, including wind; its noise-isolation and cancellation test description helps explain why results for one type of noise should not be taken as a promise for another.

Use the same comparison conditions for each pair

When comparing two or more models, make the trial as consistent as you can. This makes differences easier to attribute to the headphones instead of a change in fit, audio, or surroundings.

  1. Match the fit. Adjust each pair carefully and check that it sits securely. For earbuds, use a tip that seals comfortably.
  2. Match the listening material. Use the same familiar music and spoken-word clips, at a consistent volume where practical.
  3. Assess comfort for your expected wear time. Check pressure and stability during a realistic session, not only at first contact.
  4. Try relevant noise conditions. Compare the sounds you want to reduce, and consider both the physical seal and active cancellation.
  5. Choose for your priorities and intended use. Decide which trade-offs matter most to you; a strong result in one dimension does not settle the others.

Reviews can add standardized fit, sound, and noise-cancellation evidence to your own trial. Consumer Reports identifies sound quality, fit, and noise cancellation when applicable as evaluation dimensions in its buying guide. Use that kind of evidence to narrow choices, then let your own comfort and listening preferences guide the final comparison.
