To compare Happo screenshots from two branches, compare the Happo reports created for the commits you want to inspect. Happo’s documented API takes two report SHA identifiers—not branch names—and returns a comparison with changed, added, deleted, and unchanged snapshots. You can review those results in the response or through its comparison URL.
What you need before comparing branches
First, both commits must have Happo reports. The API compares reports by their SHA identifiers, so identify the report SHA for each commit from the report or your CI output. The API reference documents the comparison route as POST /api/reports/:sha1/compare/:sha2, with optional project and comparison settings. See Happo’s API Reference for authentication and request details.
Do not put branch names in place of the report SHAs unless your own integration resolves them before calling the API. The documented endpoint uses report identifiers.
Compare the two Happo reports
- Run the Happo workflow for each commit you want to compare, and confirm that each run produced a report.
- Find the two report SHAs associated with those commits. Check the report or CI output; Happo’s public API documentation does not establish a particular UI path for locating a SHA.
- Send an authenticated
POSTrequest to/api/reports/{sha1}/compare/{sha2}, substituting the two report SHAs. Use the authentication method and any project or comparison settings required by your setup, as described in the API Reference. - Inspect the comparison response and open its comparison URL if you want to review the results in Happo.
The comparison object documents changed diffs, ignored diffs, added and deleted snapshots, unchanged snapshots, a summary, a status, and a comparison URL. The API reference documents the endpoint and response shape, but not a universal command-line request with all authentication and project parameters; use its current request examples rather than guessing those values.

Review the differences without mistaking change for regression
- Changed snapshots: inspect each visual diff and decide whether the appearance change is intended. A reported difference alone does not prove a bug.
- Added and deleted snapshots: check whether the snapshot inventory changed. A missing or new component capture may matter even if the remaining images look correct.
- Unchanged snapshots: use these to see whether the change is localized or appears across much of the report.
- Ignored diffs: review them in context rather than assuming they are equivalent to unchanged snapshots.
For a fair comparison, keep the rendering context appropriate and consistent—especially browser and viewport. Happo’s Playwright integration and Storybook documentation describe browser, viewport, and tolerance options. Tolerances can reduce minor rendering noise; they do not replace review of meaningful visual changes.
Use CI and pull-request reviews where available
Happo describes CI and pull-request review workflows, including integrations for Storybook, Cypress, and Playwright, on its product site. When your workflow provides a review link alongside a check, use it to open the report comparison for the relevant commits.

Baseline selection is integration-specific; do not assume every provider automatically selects the same baseline. In a post dated September 10, 2026, Happo founder and CTO Joe Lencioni announced GitLab support with merge-request checks and baseline lookup that walks back through commit history. The announcement labels the GitLab integration experimental. See Happo now supports GitLab for the scope of that announcement.
Troubleshoot a missing or misleading comparison
- The request cannot find a report: verify that both commits generated Happo reports and that you copied report SHAs, not branch names or unrelated commit identifiers.
- The comparison is unavailable or incomplete: check the route’s two SHA values, authentication, and any project or comparison settings against the current API documentation.
- The result shows no changed snapshots: confirm that the reports belong to the intended commits and compare their added, deleted, and unchanged categories as well as changed diffs.
- Diffs vary between runs: check that browser and viewport conditions are appropriate and consistent. Tolerance settings may reduce minor rendering noise, but should not be used to hide changes that need review.
- You expected an automatic baseline: verify the behavior of your specific repository integration. The cited history-walking baseline announcement applies to GitLab and was marked experimental.
