The most useful way to compare Whole Foods with nearby supermarkets is to price the same fixed basket at each store, on the same date and through the same shopping channel. Match products and quantities where possible, convert different package sizes to a common unit price, and count discounts only when you qualify for them. The result tells you what your list is likely to cost locally—not which chain is always cheaper.
Build a basket that reflects your real shopping
Choose a short list of groceries you regularly buy and keep it unchanged across stores. For example, you might track one dozen eggs, one gallon of milk, a fixed weight of apples, a package of rice, and the same quantity of coffee. Those are illustrative items, not a verified price basket. The useful basket is the one that reflects your household’s purchases.
USDA Economic Research Service describes market-basket comparisons as collections of foods priced using unit retail prices. That makes a consistent list more informative than comparing a few unrelated sale items: it estimates the cost of your usual shop rather than a store’s headline deal. USDA ERS explains its market-basket and price-spread methods.
Match products, then compare unit prices
For each item, first look for the same brand, variety, quality or grade, organic status, package size, and unit. If an exact match is unavailable, record the substitute separately and identify what differs. Organic and conventional versions, different grades, or different cuts should not be presented as equivalent without qualification.
#1 Best Overall
When package sizes differ, compare the price per matching measure—such as dollars per ounce, pound, or count—instead of comparing sticker prices alone. Check that both unit-price labels use the same measure. NIST’s Unit Pricing Guide, NIST SP 1181-2025, calls unit pricing “one of the best tools available to consumers to facilitate value and price comparison.”
Record the price you can actually pay
For each store, note the regular price and any sale price, along with the date, location, and conditions. Record whether a deal requires a loyalty account, coupon, minimum quantity, or membership, and include it in your comparison only if you qualify and meet the terms.
Whole Foods’ local sales page lists time-sensitive offers and Prime-member deals. Its Prime deal information describes selected deals and an additional discount on eligible sale items, subject to the stated conditions. Treat those prices as available only to shoppers who meet the applicable requirements. The store’s savings signs, 365 products, and “Low Price” signs describe Whole Foods’ own offers and positioning; they do not show that a comparable basket costs less than at another supermarket.

Keep the shopping channel consistent
Compare in-store shelf prices with other stores’ in-store shelf prices, or compare online prices with comparable online offers. Keep delivery, service, or other fees as separate lines rather than quietly folding them into item prices.
Rank #3
Whole Foods states that online prices and promotions may differ from in-store prices and offers, availability varies by location, and listed prices can change without notice. See its online ordering information. A price checked for delivery should not be assumed to match the shelf price at the same store.
Use a simple worksheet and calculate the basket total
Use a spreadsheet, notes app, or paper table to capture the comparison. The template below is a practical worksheet, not a feature of any retailer’s app.
| Item | Size or quantity | Whole Foods regular price | Eligible sale or Prime price | Other supermarket price | Unit price | Notes and date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example: eggs | One dozen | Enter observed price | Enter only if eligible | Enter observed price | Use the same unit at each store | Store, date, and any conditions |
| Example: apples | Same weight | Enter observed price | Enter only if eligible | Enter observed price | Price per pound or other matching measure | Variety and organic status |
| Your item | Your quantity | Enter observed price | Enter only if eligible | Enter observed price | Common unit | Substitute, if any |
For each store, add the prices needed to buy the equivalent quantities in your basket. If a package is larger than your required amount, either compare unit prices or calculate the cost of the quantity you would actually use; do not compare one full package at one store with a different quantity at another. Keep substitutes and fees visible, and show both item-level unit prices and the basket total.

Prime members can scan the app to apply eligible discounts at checkout. It can help collect Whole Foods prices, but you still need current prices for the other supermarkets in your comparison.

Understand what the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
A dated basket total is evidence about a particular list, set of stores, location, channel, and shopping date. It is not a universal ranking of supermarket chains. No current national store-to-store price difference or general ranking is established by the sources cited here.
USDA ERS’s Food-at-Home Monthly Area Prices data cover 90 food-at-home categories across 15 U.S. geographic areas. They provide aggregate mean unit values and price indexes, not live quotes for a specific store, brand, package, or shopping trip. ERS also cautions that annual national-average prices do not represent what a consumer would pay in a particular locality, at a particular time, or for a particular brand or package. These sources can offer broad context, but checking local prices for your actual basket is what answers the practical question.
