To find the cheapest usable gas nearby, search your current location or a specific ZIP code, choose the fuel grade your vehicle needs, and compare both price and distance. Before driving to a low-price listing, check when it was updated and whether the price requires cash, a loyalty account, or another condition.
Start with a location-specific search
Use a gas-price app with location access, or enter your city or ZIP code if you prefer not to share your location. GasBuddy supports both approaches; its app and website do not necessarily present results the same way. GasBuddy’s app search shows around 50 nearby stations and can sort by price, distance, or both. Its website search may instead show stations around the geographic center of the searched area, rather than ranking them by price or distance.
AAA’s Gas Price Finder accepts a city, state, or ZIP code. AAA Club Alliance says listed prices are updated daily; that does not guarantee every station is listed or that every price remains current between updates.

Compare prices you can actually pay
Set the search to the grade your vehicle requires, then inspect the terms attached to the price. A displayed low price may depend on paying cash or debit, using a loyalty account, having a membership, or meeting another station-specific condition. GasBuddy says some U.S. stations discount for cash or debit and offers a cash-price display toggle and filter. Check the listing and payment filters rather than assuming the lowest number applies to every customer.

Compare the same grade and payment basis across stations. A rewards offer or cash-only rate is not equivalent to an unconditional posted price; include it only if you qualify and intend to use it.
Weigh the savings against distance and route
The lowest listed price is not always the cheapest stop overall. A distant station or a detour can eat into the savings, so sort by distance as well as price and compare stations you can reach conveniently. For a longer drive, search along your planned route instead of searching only around your starting point.

GasBuddy documents route search by entering a destination in Find Gas and selecting one of the suggested routes. Its documented flow does not allow route customization, and availability or coverage may differ by location. AAA also describes station finding and trip fuel-cost planning. Brand, amenity, fuel grade, payment, and distance filters can narrow a search enough to hide useful options. If an expected station does not appear, reset filters or inspect the map. GasBuddy specifically notes that warehouse-club stations such as Costco or Sam’s Club may not show until filters are reset or the map is used. Check price freshness and local coverage
Fuel prices change, and price sources differ by service and country. AAA says its finder prices are updated daily. In Australia, the ACCC’s 2024 guide says Google Maps displays an age notice when a fuel price is more than 24 hours old; the ACCC also says it could not confirm the source of fuel prices shown in Google Maps and Waze. The ACCC’s guide discusses Australian apps such as MotorMouth and PetrolSpy, as well as state and territory price-transparency schemes. Those Australian examples should not be assumed to cover U.S. locations.
When a listing looks unusually cheap or reaching it would take you out of your way, check its age if shown and confirm the price with the station when practical. No single app is established as the most accurate in every area; coverage and freshness are local questions.
Consider rewards only after comparing the posted price
Retailer fuel-rewards programs can reduce what an eligible customer pays, but participation, terms, and qualifying locations matter. AAA describes discounts at participating Shell and Love’s locations and lists other fuel-rewards programs. Check AAA’s current fuel-savings information and each program’s terms before counting a reward as a saving. A cash-back card can also have its own eligibility rules or fees; it does not make a station’s posted price lower for everyone.
