Compare what the recipient can actually spend or withdraw—not just the sender fee or blockchain charge. For the same sending amount, countries, funding method, payout method, and quote time, add explicit fees, taxes, exchange-rate spread, intermediary deductions, and every crypto conversion and withdrawal cost. Then compare delivery time, access requirements, and protections.
Set up a like-for-like comparison
Prices are meaningful only when the transfer assumptions match. A bank deposit, cash pickup, and wallet payout can have different costs and availability, even with the same provider. Record these details before collecting quotes:
- Sending and receiving countries, and the currencies involved.
- The amount to send and how it will be funded, such as a bank account, card, or cash.
- How the recipient will receive the money: bank deposit, cash pickup, mobile or digital wallet, or another payout method.
- The date and time of each quote. Rates and terms can change; the Bank of Italy advises comparing offers from the same day: its remittance-cost calculator.
Use identical assumptions for every route. If one service quotes a bank deposit and another quotes cash pickup, treat them as different comparisons.
Calculate the full cost and recipient payout
A useful comparison keeps two figures separate: the sender’s total outlay and the amount the recipient can use in local currency. A low advertised fee does not necessarily mean a low total cost. The CFPB identifies provider fees, agent and third-party fees, exchange-rate costs, and government taxes as possible costs of sending a remittance: CFPB Circular 2024-02.
#1 Best Overall
- Record the sender’s total outlay. Add the amount sent, transfer charges, funding charges, and applicable taxes. For a crypto route, also count the cost of acquiring or converting into the token and sending it to the recipient or service.
- Compare the exchange rate with a same-time reference. Note both the provider’s quoted rate and a reference rate for the same currency pair and quote time. The gap can reveal a cost even when the listed transfer fee is zero. The CFPB discusses exchange-rate spread as a remittance cost in Circular 2024-02.
- Trace any intermediary deductions. Include fees charged by agents, banks, payment networks, platforms, or other providers in the route, where known.
- Follow the value through conversion and payout. For crypto, include any token-to-fiat conversion, redemption, off-ramp, local payout, and recipient withdrawal fees or spreads.
- Write down the recipient’s usable amount. Use the amount available to spend or withdraw after known charges—not merely the amount sent, the value displayed in a wallet, or a blockchain confirmation.
To estimate an exchange-rate spread, compare the provider’s rate with the same-time reference rate for the same currency pair. Express the difference as a percentage of the reference-rate value. Keep the reference rate and quote timestamp with your calculation so the comparison can be checked.
Use a worksheet
Record one row per route. Mark costs as unknown rather than treating them as zero.

| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Provider and route | Service, funding method, and payout method |
| Quote timestamp | Date and time the quote was obtained |
| Sender outlay | Amount paid, including transfer and funding charges and taxes |
| Rates | Provider’s quoted rate, same-time reference rate, and estimated spread |
| Other deductions | Known agent, third-party, network, platform, conversion, off-ramp, and withdrawal charges |
| Recipient proceeds | Local-currency amount available to spend or withdraw after known charges |
| Availability and access | Estimated time until usable funds, required accounts or identity checks, and any cash-collection requirements |
| Recourse | Cancellation, error or dispute process, limits, and protections that apply to the route |
Check what “no fee” leaves out
A zero transfer fee is only one line in the comparison. The provider may use an exchange rate that delivers less local currency, or charges may arise during currency conversion or withdrawal. The CFPB warns against misleading “free” or “no fee” claims when costs remain or a promotional price is not clearly presented as limited-time: Circular 2024-02. The UK Financial Conduct Authority likewise cautions that emphasizing the absence of a fixed fee while obscuring exchange-rate differences can mislead consumers: FCA pricing guidance.
Digital-wallet arrangements can also have currency-conversion or withdrawal charges. Ask what the recipient must pay to turn a wallet balance into local currency or cash, and whether another intermediary takes a deduction before payout.

Account for the entire crypto route
A stablecoin transfer is not automatically a completed remittance. The sender may need to fund an account and acquire the token; the recipient may need a compatible wallet, then a service or agent to convert the token or pay out local currency. Network fees are just one part of that chain. Stablecoin arrangements depend on their design, infrastructure, and access to payment systems, as described in the BIS Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures’ October 2023 report on the tokenisation of cross-border payments.
- Identify who accepts the sender’s money and who buys or converts the token.
- Record the network and wallet requirements, plus any platform or transfer charges.
- Find out who converts, redeems, or pays out the token, and what rate and charges apply.
- Check whether the recipient needs an account, identity verification, a separate wallet, or a trip to collect cash.
- Compare the time until the funds are usable in the recipient’s intended form—not just the time until a token transfer is confirmed.
The BIS has described stablecoin cross-border performance as uneven once fees, spreads, and on- and off-ramp costs are included; see its speech on stablecoins and cross-border payments. A large transaction-volume estimate is not evidence of remittance use: the BIS’s 2026 Annual Economic Report says the estimated $28 trillion in stablecoin transaction volume in 2025 is far less informative about real-world payment use than it first appears, because transfers between wallets owned by the same party account for activity that should not be mistaken for payments.

Compare delivery, access, and recourse
Price is not the only practical difference. For each route, note the estimated time until funds are usable, transfer limits, payout choices, and what happens if a transfer is delayed or sent incorrectly. Check whether the recipient can use the funds without an account, wallet, identity checks, or a cash-collection trip.

Use global figures as context, not a price quote
The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide homepage reports a global average remittance cost of 6.36%, with a displayed last-update date of August 18, 2025. It also reports coverage of 367 corridors, 48 sending countries, and 105 receiving countries. These figures provide context, not a price for your amount, route, or payout method. The same page says reducing prices by at least five percentage points could save up to $16 billion annually: World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide.
There is no reliable universal winner between crypto, banks, and money-transfer services. The result depends on the corridor, amount, funding and payout methods, quote time, and the full conversion chain. Compare same-time quotes for the route the recipient can actually use.
