Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor application UI tests, use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion: it saves a reference screenshot on the first run, then compares later Chromium captures against that reviewed baseline. Keep baseline creation and CI runs in the same browser and operating-system environment, make the page deterministic, and inspect every diff before accepting an update. If you mean Chrome’s own browser interface rather than a web application, use Chromium’s Pixel Tests instead.
Choose the screenshot workflow that matches what you are testing
| What you are testing | Use | How references are handled |
|---|---|---|
| A web application or page driven by Playwright | Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() |
Reference images are generated on the first run and compared on later runs; they can be stored with the test project. |
| Chrome’s own desktop browser UI | Chromium Pixel Tests | Pixel Tests compare captures with approved images through Skia Gold; failures are reviewed before accepting or rejecting a change. |
These workflows solve different problems. Playwright is the practical starting point for app-level Chromium screenshots. Chromium’s Pixel Tests are for work on Chrome’s UI itself. Chromium also has web tests with PNG baselines and reference tests that compare two pages pixel by pixel; those are distinct from Pixel Tests for browser UI. See Chromium’s Pixel Tests guide and web-test expectations and baselines.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('https://example.test');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
Replace https://example.test with a stable page in your test environment. Run the test with npx playwright test. The first run creates the expected image; subsequent runs compare the new capture with that image. Commit the reference so changes can be reviewed with the test code.
Understand when the comparison happens
Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match, then compares the last image with the expected screenshot. This helps avoid capturing while the page is still visibly changing, but it cannot make inherently random content deterministic. Screenshot assertions disable animations by default and hide the caret by default. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide and PageAssertions API.
Limit the capture to the relevant UI
Use a full-page capture when the page’s overall composition is what you are testing. For a component or a particular region, target that element instead:

await expect(page.locator('[data-testid="checkout-summary"]')).toHaveScreenshot();
Choose a selector that identifies the intended component reliably. A narrow capture reduces unrelated differences, but do not exclude an area whose layout or content is part of the behavior under test.
Make Chromium captures reproducible
Fix the page state and test data
- Use fixed fixture data and a predictable test account rather than live, changing production content.
- Set a consistent viewport and navigate to the same route and application state.
- Wait for the state the test is meant to assess, such as a loaded component or completed transition.
- Remove or stabilize timestamps, rotating banners, advertisements, and other volatile areas only if they are outside the behavior being tested.
- Keep fonts, browser settings, headless mode, and the runtime environment consistent.
For volatile elements that should not affect a particular comparison, Playwright’s stylePath option can apply a stylesheet during the screenshot assertion. For example:
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({
stylePath: './tests/visual-overrides.css',
});
/* tests/visual-overrides.css */
[data-testid="current-time"],
[data-testid="rotating-promo"] {
visibility: hidden !important;
}
Keep filtering purposeful: hiding a real regression makes a test less useful. Review the API options for the assertion’s supported configuration.

Keep the rendering environment fixed
Browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Create baselines and compare them in the same configured environment—for example, the same CI container image and Playwright-managed browser version. If your project deliberately tests multiple operating systems, treat their expected output as separate platform-specific baselines instead of expecting identical pixels across environments. Playwright documents platform-specific snapshot naming, and Chromium notes that platform output can differ in its web-test baseline guidance.
Set a diff tolerance only after stabilizing the page
Pixel comparisons can be affected by small rendering differences. Playwright provides maxDiffPixels and related screenshot comparison options to define acceptable differences. There is no universally correct threshold: choose one only after reviewing actual diffs from the environment you intend to run, and keep it small enough to catch meaningful visual changes.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({
maxDiffPixels: 20,
});
The number above is an example configuration, not a recommended universal value. A large allowance can conceal a layout or styling regression. If differences vary from run to run, fix the unstable content or rendering environment rather than raising the threshold. The supported options are documented in the PageAssertions API.

Review and update baselines deliberately
- Run the failing visual test and open the actual, expected, and diff images.
- Decide whether the change is intended, a genuine defect, or capture noise. Fix the page or test when it is noise.
- When the change is intended, update the reference with
npx playwright test --update-snapshots. - Review and commit the changed screenshots alongside the code change so the new appearance is an explicit, reviewable baseline.
A passing screenshot assertion means the output matches the approved reference within the configured comparison rules; it does not prove that the reference itself is universally correct. Baseline updates should therefore be reviewed, not accepted automatically.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Chromium Pixel Tests for Chrome’s browser UI
If the code under test is Chrome’s own interface, follow Chromium’s Pixel Tests workflow. Chromium describes these tests as comparing screenshots with approved images using Skia Gold. Its guide prefers Kombucha Screenshot and ScreenshotSurface verbs for new tests; the guide marks TestBrowserUi as legacy support.
Screenshotcaptures the named UI element.ScreenshotSurfacecaptures the containing dialog or window.
Keep the capture boundary tight enough that unrelated browser elements are not part of the expected image. When a test fails, inspect the expected and actual images through the documented Skia Gold workflow before deciding whether to accept a changed baseline. When to add a hosted visual-testing service
For a team that only needs Chromium snapshots in its existing Playwright suite, start with Playwright’s built-in assertion; a hosted service is not required. Consider hosted review when you need centralized approval, cross-browser or responsive rendering coverage, or a shared visual-review workflow beyond repository-managed snapshots.
- Chromatic’s Playwright integration documents capturing page archives during test runs, uploading them to Chromatic, generating snapshots, and pixel diffing. Its visual testing documentation describes a cloud snapshot and review workflow.
- BrowserStack describes Percy as a visual testing service and documents visual comparisons, review, and Playwright integration. Its partner page concerns business partner opportunities, not evidence of an editorial referral arrangement.
Compare tools against the needs that matter to your team: which browser engines and viewport sizes are rendered, where baselines live, how reviewers approve changes, and how capture noise is controlled.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-off screenshot or a capture outside your test runner, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. The code below saves a WebP capture of the example URL; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.test -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a visual test tell whether a page looks correct to users?
No. It checks the rendered output against a reference image that your team has approved; the reference still needs human judgment.
Should I use Playwright snapshots for Chrome’s own toolbar or dialogs?
No. Chromium’s Pixel Tests are the workflow intended for Chrome browser UI; Playwright’s screenshot assertion is suited to application pages driven by Playwright.
