Compare the exact vehicles using the same annual mileage and the energy prices you would actually pay. Calculate yearly gasoline and electricity costs separately, then add them for a plug-in hybrid. EPA labels are useful standardized starting points, but they do not predict your personal bill.
Start with the exact vehicles you might buy
Choose the model year, model, drivetrain, and trim for each candidate. Fuel economy, electricity consumption, and EV range can vary across configurations, so a manufacturer’s headline figure may not match the vehicle on a dealer’s lot. Check the EPA label for the specific version and confirm it against the manufacturer’s current listing. Chevrolet’s fuel-economy page lists figures by model and identifies some specific powertrains or drivetrains.
Record each vehicle’s relevant consumption figure: combined MPG for a gasoline vehicle or conventional hybrid; kWh per 100 miles for an EV; and both electric-mode consumption and gasoline-mode MPG for a plug-in hybrid. EPA labels also show MPGe, but MPGe is an energy-equivalence measure—not the number of dollars you will pay for fuel or charging.

Set a fair comparison: miles and local energy prices
Use the same annual miles for every vehicle, ideally based on your own driving rather than a generic estimate. Then use the gasoline price and electricity rate that apply where and how you will refuel or charge. Your effective charging rate may depend on where you charge; use the rate you expect to pay for the charging represented in your estimate.

The EPA fuel-economy label and vehicle information provide standardized estimates, including annual fuel cost and five-year fuel-savings comparisons, but those figures depend on stated assumptions. For a more tailored comparison, use the U.S. Department of Energy Vehicle Cost Calculator, which accepts annual driving distance, uses state electricity prices, and can compare up to eight vehicles or custom vehicles. Neither a national-average electricity assumption nor a label estimate necessarily matches your local bill.

- Annual gallons = annual miles ÷ combined MPG.
- Annual gasoline cost = annual gallons × local price per gallon.
For example, keep the inputs specific to your situation: if a vehicle is rated at 30 combined MPG and you drive 12,000 miles in a year, the estimate is 400 gallons. Multiply 400 by the local price per gallon to estimate annual gasoline cost. This is a calculation, not a guarantee of real-world consumption.

Battery electric vehicle
For an EV, use the EPA label’s kWh per 100 miles where available. It translates directly into an electricity-cost estimate:

- Annual kWh = annual miles × kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100.
- Annual charging cost = annual kWh × applicable electricity price per kWh.
For instance, a vehicle consuming 30 kWh per 100 miles driven 12,000 miles uses an estimated 3,600 kWh. Multiply that by the electricity price that applies to your charging to estimate the annual cost. If you use different charging rates or locations, estimate the share of charging at each rate rather than applying one price to all charging.
Plug-in hybrid
A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) uses electricity for some driving and gasoline for other driving. EPA gives PHEVs two fuel-economy values: an electric-mode value in MPGe and a gasoline-mode value in MPG. Estimate what share of your annual miles will actually be driven in each mode based on your charging routine and trip pattern. Apply the electricity calculation to electric miles and the gasoline calculation to gasoline miles, then add the two costs. Do not treat all PHEV miles as electric unless your likely use supports that assumption.

Compare the results without confusing efficiency and cost
MPG describes distance per gallon; MPGe expresses energy efficiency on an equivalent basis. Neither is itself a price. To compare what you may spend, convert each vehicle’s consumption into dollars using the same annual distance and the relevant local energy prices. The EPA’s text version of the electric-vehicle label explains the “MPG illusion”: consumption per distance can be more useful for understanding differences than miles-per-gallon figures alone.
A simple worksheet keeps assumptions visible:
| Candidate | Consumption input | Price input | Annual cost calculation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gasoline vehicle or conventional hybrid | Combined MPG | Local dollars per gallon | (Annual miles ÷ MPG) × dollars per gallon |
| Battery electric vehicle | kWh per 100 miles | Applicable dollars per kWh | (Annual miles × kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100) × dollars per kWh |
| Plug-in hybrid | Electric-mode consumption and gasoline-mode MPG | Applicable electricity and gasoline prices | Electric-mile cost + gasoline-mile cost |
Keep the assumptions beside the result: model year and trim, annual miles, local rates, and—in a PHEV—the estimated electric-mile share. That makes it easier to see whether a different commute, charging habit, or utility rate changes the comparison.

Account for estimates and real-world variation
EPA ratings give candidates a consistent basis, not a promise about your personal results. EPA says EV range estimates are general guidance; cold weather, air-conditioning use, and high-speed driving can significantly reduce range. Driving conditions and habits can also make actual gasoline or electricity use differ from a projection.
As broad context rather than a substitute for vehicle-specific data, EPA reported that the median consumption for model-year 2025 EVs was 39 kWh per 100 miles. The figure is combined city/highway consumption; EPA’s page, last updated February 18, 2026, pairs it with national-average electricity-emissions data based on eGRID 2023. Use the candidate vehicle’s own consumption and your electricity price for a cost estimate.
Keep energy expense separate from total ownership cost
This method compares recurring gasoline and electricity expense. It does not establish which vehicle costs less overall. A broader ownership comparison would separately account for purchase price, financing, insurance, maintenance, charging equipment and installation, and resale value; energy-cost calculators alone do not determine those costs.
