Compare a trade-in’s confirmed cash amount with what you could realistically keep from a private sale—not with a seller’s asking price. Estimate that net by checking completed sales of similar complete PCs, then subtract the fees, shipping, packing, and other costs you would actually pay. A buyback may be simpler; selling privately may bring in more, but only if the difference survives those costs and the extra work is worth it.
Compare the money you would actually receive
Put both routes on the same footing: the same PC, condition, accessories, and delivery assumptions. For a trade-in, use the cash you expect after inspection and any stated charges. For a private sale, use a plausible completed-sale price and subtract your direct expenses.
Self-sale net = expected completed-sale price − marketplace and listing costs − seller-paid shipping and packing − other direct costs. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed result: the PC may take time to sell, and the eventual buyer or handoff may not work out.

Estimate what your complete PC could sell for
Use completed sales, not asking prices
Look for recent completed sales of complete desktops with the closest available match on graphics card, processor, memory, storage, condition, and included accessories. An unsold listing shows what a seller hopes to receive, not what a buyer paid.

eBay’s selling resource describes sold-price lookup, but its examples concern consoles and handheld systems; it does not provide a tested valuation method or current price data for gaming desktops. Treat it only as a pointer to a lookup feature, not as evidence of what your PC is worth.
Be cautious when comparable desktops are scarce
Do not total the original retail prices of the parts and assume that is the computer’s current resale value. There is no established formula or current average discount for gaming PCs in the available evidence. If you find only a few close full-system matches, use a range based on those visible transactions and note when you checked them and where the matches differ. Do not present a made-up average as a market value.

Calculate selling costs for your actual listing
Check the fee schedule for your country, account, and category
Marketplace fees are not one universal percentage. On eBay US, the official selling-fees page says costs depend on factors including category and listing setup. It lists up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings per month for qualifying basic listings and provides a Computers/Tablets & Networking schedule with category exceptions.

Include costs specific to your delivery plan
Estimate shipping using the packed tower’s actual size and weight, and include protective packaging if you pay for it. Local pickup can avoid shipping, but it still requires arranging a safe and workable handoff. Add only costs you expect to incur; do not deduct hypothetical expenses as if they were certain.
Check the quote terms before sending the PC
A headline quote may depend on inspection or eligibility. Before accepting, get clear answers in writing about the following:

- Does the offer cover the complete tower, or only eligible components?
- What condition—cosmetic and functional—does the quoted amount assume?
- Will the buyer inspect the PC, and what could reduce or invalidate the offer?
- If the amount changes, how and by when can you decline the revised offer?
- Who pays return shipping if you reject a revised offer or the PC is not accepted?
- How and when will payment arrive, and is the stated amount cash or store credit?
Trade-in partner policies vary. Swappa’s trade-in FAQ says the partner supplies prepaid shipping, but it does not confirm that complete gaming desktops qualify. Do not treat it as proof that your tower can be traded in or that another service has the same terms.

A local specialist may be another route where available. For example, one UK PC buyer advertises purchases of gaming PCs, workstations, and full setups in its stated service area (Cash In Your Tech). That is a geographically limited example, not a recommendation for readers elsewhere. Ask any local buyer for a written cash offer and terms, then compare the amount you can actually expect to receive.

Choose based on the net difference and the work involved
- A trade-in may suit you if its confirmed amount is acceptable and you value a simpler process, fewer buyer conversations, or a defined transaction path.
- A private sale may suit you if close completed sales suggest a meaningful net premium after costs and you are willing to prepare a listing, answer questions, and manage shipping or pickup.
- If the estimates are close, weigh the certainty and coordination burden according to your priorities. There is no evidence-based universal break-even percentage; that depends on your own time and risk tolerance.
- If the private-sale estimate looks notably higher, recheck the comparables and costs before treating the gap as real.
Your location, exact components, condition, accessories, local demand, available delivery options, fees, and priorities can all change the result. Without those details, no reliable cash figure can be calculated.
