Start with the company’s Form 10-Q and compare its latest fiscal quarter with the same quarter a year earlier. Then compare year-to-date results with the matching prior-year period. Read the income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement, notes, and management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A) together; calculate changes; and check whether the reported figures are comparable and whether any adjusted figures reconcile to GAAP.

This method applies to U.S. domestic public companies. Foreign issuers may report on different forms, and fiscal quarters do not necessarily align with calendar quarters.

Which filings and periods should you compare?

A domestic public company files a Form 10-Q for each of its first three fiscal quarters. The filing includes unaudited financial statements for the quarter and year to date, alongside corresponding periods from the previous year. For a company’s fourth quarter, look to its annual report and earnings-announcement materials rather than expecting a fourth 10-Q. Investor.gov explains the filing periods and provides access to filings through SEC EDGAR.

Use the company’s fiscal calendar to identify a matching quarter. A fiscal year can start and end on dates other than the calendar year, so “the quarter ended” may not mean March 31, June 30, September 30, or December 31.

Use three period comparisons for different questions

Comparison What it helps show What to watch
Same fiscal quarter, year over year How the quarter compares with the corresponding period a year earlier; this can help account for recurring seasonal patterns. One-off events or changes in the business can still make the periods unlike.
Year to date, year over year How results have accumulated so far in the fiscal year versus the corresponding prior-year span. It can mask a change concentrated in one quarter.
Quarter over quarter Whether results have recently accelerated or weakened. Seasonality, different quarter lengths, and fiscal-calendar effects can distort the comparison.

These are analytical choices, not a regulator-prescribed scorecard. Say why a comparison is useful and what it leaves out.

Find and verify the documents

  1. Open the company’s filings in SEC EDGAR and locate its latest 10-Q.
  2. Find the prior-year 10-Q for the matching fiscal quarter. For a fourth-quarter comparison, use the annual report and earnings-announcement materials.
  3. Use an earnings release as a quick overview, not as a substitute for the periodic filing. Companies often furnish releases with a Form 8-K; the full statements generally appear later in the 10-Q or 10-K. Verify the release’s figures and explanations in the filing. See Investor.gov’s guide to reading an 8-K.

What to record from each quarter

Build a comparison from the company’s financial statements and supporting disclosures rather than relying on a single headline number. Record the period, currency, units, and the filing page or table for every figure so the values can be checked and compared consistently.

Choose measures that fit the business

  • Income statement: revenue, gross profit or margin, operating income, net income, and diluted earnings per share.
  • Cash flow statement: cash from operating activities and capital expenditures.
  • Balance sheet: cash, borrowings, working capital, and other material balances.
  • Segments: where the company reports them, compare relevant segment measures as well as the company total; an aggregate can hide different trends among business units.

Revenue and earnings alone do not show cash generation, liquidity, debt, or changes in equity. Read the income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement, and explanatory notes together, then use MD&A to understand management’s discussion of material changes and known trends. Investor.gov’s guide to reading a 10-K or 10-Q describes these parts of a filing.

How to calculate the change

For each measure, calculate both the difference in the reported unit and, where meaningful, the percentage change:

  • Absolute change = current-period value − prior-period value.
  • Percentage change = (current-period value − prior-period value) ÷ prior-period value × 100.

Label the units and denominator. For example, a change in millions of dollars is not interchangeable with a percentage change. A percentage can be mathematically correct but misleading when the prior-year value is zero, negative, unusually small, or affected by a one-off. In those cases, explain the limitation and emphasize the absolute amounts or other relevant context instead of presenting the percentage as a useful measure of growth.

How to interpret the numbers

Look for disclosed drivers and comparability issues

Check MD&A and the notes for explanations of material movements and factors that may make two periods less comparable. Depending on the business, these can include volume, pricing, costs, acquisitions or divestitures, foreign exchange, restructuring, impairment, tax, litigation, accounting changes, and seasonality. The filing may also describe known trends, uncertainties, and critical accounting judgments. Treat the reported movement as a fact and management’s account of its cause as an explanation, not as proof that the cause is complete or that the trend will continue.

Compare earnings with cash and balance-sheet movements

Set net income alongside operating cash flow, then examine changes in cash, borrowings, working capital, and other material balances. When earnings and cash movement diverge, the statements and notes provide context for understanding the difference. This cross-check can reveal a different picture from the income statement alone; neither measure should be treated as a complete verdict.

Keep GAAP and adjusted results separate

Companies may highlight non-GAAP measures such as adjusted EBITDA or adjusted earnings. These measures do not conform to GAAP. Identify the closest GAAP measure, inspect the reconciliation and the items excluded, and check whether adjustments are applied consistently across periods. The SEC’s explanation of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) provides background on the standard framework; an adjusted measure should be read alongside, not in place of, the relevant GAAP result.

Account for the limits of filings

Quarterly statements are unaudited. The SEC reviews filings for compliance, but review does not certify every figure: the SEC’s Investor.gov bulletin How to Read a 10-K/10-Q states, “The SEC does not vouch for the accuracy of a 10-K or 10-Q.” A reported change, even when clear, does not by itself establish its cause or predict future performance.

How to present a cautious conclusion

Summarize the comparison with the period and units attached to the figures: state what changed, by how much, and what the filing says drove the movement. Distinguish reported data from management’s interpretation, note any comparability issue that materially affects the reading, and avoid treating one quarter as proof of a durable trend. Historical growth or decline alone cannot establish whether a stock is fairly valued or suitable for a particular investor; that requires broader analysis of risks, valuation, capital needs, and personal circumstances.
