Yes. Open-source software can be sold and used commercially; “open source” describes rights granted by a license, not a ban on charging. A sustainable business can earn revenue from hosting, support, consulting, training, maintenance, or separately licensed features. What customers may do with copies—and what your business must provide—depends on the exact license, how you deliver the software, and who has the rights to license its code.

What does commercializing open-source software mean?

Commercialization means building a business around open-source software or charging for the software itself. The Open Source Initiative (OSI) says commercial use is allowed under the Open Source Definition, and that companies may sell open-source programs. That permission does not automatically let a seller restrict recipients’ rights: restrictions depend on the license. The OSI FAQ, last modified January 21, 2025, distinguishes permission to use software commercially from the separate question of what conditions a distributor can impose.

Commercial also does not mean proprietary. A company can charge for copies while recipients retain the rights provided by the applicable open-source license. The GNU Project likewise notes that excluding commercial use would hinder the free-software community. GNU: What is Free Software?

How do open-source businesses make money?

The customer can pay for convenience, expertise, operations, assurances, or additional features rather than for exclusive control over the open-source code. The OSI identifies services, warranties, customization, maintenance, and trademark licensing as possible revenue sources. OSI FAQ

Open-core versus dual licensing

Open-core: charge for additions around the core

In an open-core model, a company makes a core component available under an open-source license and offers proprietary features or a paid tier alongside it. The commercial offer is an added component or capability, not a new exclusive license imposed on the open-source core. Make the boundary legible to users: identify what is covered by the open-source license and what is available under separate terms. The model is described in the Bitkom Open Source Guide.

Dual licensing: offer different licenses for code you can license

Dual licensing makes the same or substantially similar code available under more than one license, often an open-source license and a commercial license. This can serve customers who need permissions or terms different from those offered by the open-source license. It is viable only if the business can grant the proposed license for the code in question. Review contributor agreements, assignments, and ownership history; having published a project does not alone establish that you can relicense every contribution. How license obligations depend on distribution and use

Read the actual license and version before deciding what to sell or how to deliver it. The obligations may depend on whether you distribute copies, run the software as a network service, or do both. Dependencies, documentation, and other project assets may have separate licenses.

When you distribute copies

GPL-family licenses permit commercial charging while preserving recipients’ rights under the applicable license. The details differ by license and version. For example, the FSF’s GPLv3 guidance explains installation-information obligations for certain products, while clarifying that these do not require a vendor to provide support service. Read the relevant text and guidance rather than treating “GPL” as one uniform rule. GNU GPL FAQ

When you provide network access

A hosted service still warrants license review. The GNU AGPL was designed for network-server software and addresses cooperation with users of modified versions under its terms. Whether a particular deployment triggers an obligation depends on the license text and how the software is used; do not assume that keeping copies on your own servers ends the analysis. Commercial use is not automatically a special case

The Apache Software Foundation says it does not distinguish between personal, internal, or commercial use of its projects. That is a statement about Apache projects, not a substitute for checking the license on a different project or version. Apache Licensing and Distribution FAQ

  • Delivery capacity and cost: Hosting requires ongoing operational delivery; consulting and support depend on the people and commitments you can sustain.

  • License and ownership fit: Check the project license and version, distribution method, dependencies, and contribution rights before relying on open-core or dual licensing.
  • Trust and project boundaries: Explain which parts remain open source, what is separately paid for, and what customers receive. A clear boundary helps users understand the offer without suggesting that the open-source license has changed.

Checklist before launching

  1. Inventory the code and assets. Identify the project’s exact license and version, plus separate licenses for dependencies, documentation, and other included assets.
  2. Map how customers receive the software. Note whether you distribute copies, provide network access, or do both; then assess the relevant license terms for each activity.
  3. Confirm licensing authority. If you plan to dual-license, establish that you can grant the proposed terms for all relevant code and contributions.
  4. Define the paid value. Specify whether customers pay for operations, support, customization, training, proprietary extensions, assurances, or a combination.
  5. Describe the boundary accurately. Do not call open-source code proprietary merely because you sell it, and do not imply that customers lose rights granted by its license.
  6. Get project-specific advice where needed. General license FAQs cannot resolve every codebase’s ownership or compliance questions. Have the actual license and contribution history reviewed for a specific licensing decision.

If you are commercializing a screenshot feature, product, or workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Here is a cURL example; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and setup.

ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the page verdict and billing status identified in response headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I charge for software released under an open-source license?

Yes. Whether you can impose conditions on recipients is governed by the software’s license, not simply by the fact that you charge.

Does hosting open-source software avoid license obligations?

Not necessarily. The applicable terms depend on the license and the way you provide the software; the AGPL specifically addresses network-server use.

Can I dual-license a project if I accept outside contributions?

Only if you have the rights needed to grant the additional license for the relevant code. Check contribution terms and ownership before offering it.
