First identify what you are clicking. A JavaScript alert, confirm, or prompt is a browser-native dialog and requires Selenium’s alert API. A cookie banner or custom modal is normally HTML in the page, so locate its button and click it as a web element. They may look similar, but using the wrong API is the most common reason a dismissal script fails.
The examples below use Python Selenium. The same decision applies to every language binding: classify the UI, wait for the required state, perform the user-visible action, and then wait for evidence that the page changed.

Selenium’s WebDriver documentation describes native browser control, while its interaction guidance explains that a normal element click performs user-like checks. If the target’s center is covered, Selenium can raise an ElementClickInterceptedException rather than clicking through the obstruction. See the WebDriver overview and element interaction guidance.
Click a cookie popup rendered in HTML
Cookie banners are not browser alerts. Inspect the page and choose a locator for the actual control. Accessible role/name, a site-specific attribute, or a stable ID is preferable to a long CSS path. The following locator is illustrative, not a universal selector: every consent vendor and site can use different markup.

Treat text as illustrative: wording, capitalization, localization, and nested spans vary. Prefer a documented test hook such as data-testid when the application provides one.
When the banner may not appear
A previous test run, an existing profile, geolocation, or an experiment can suppress consent UI. Make the test deterministic by starting with a clean browser profile or by arranging state deliberately. Do not claim that adding a cookie tested the visible consent workflow; it only sets browser state.

Accept, dismiss, or enter text in a JavaScript dialog
Native dialogs are handled through driver.switch_to.alert. The alert page in Selenium’s documentation covers reading text and choosing an action: JavaScript alerts, prompts and confirmations.

Wait for the state you actually need
Dynamic consent managers and modals can be inserted after navigation, animated, or removed and recreated. Explicit waits poll for a condition; a fixed sleep() can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily delay a fast one. Selenium’s waiting strategies documentation also warns against mixing implicit and explicit waits because timing becomes unpredictable.

Useful conditions
presence_of_element_located: the node exists, but may not be visible or clickable.visibility_of_element_located: the node is visible.element_to_be_clickable: Selenium can find a visible, enabled target suitable for a normal click.invisibility_of_element_located: a banner or overlay has disappeared after the action.alert_is_present: a native browser dialog is available.
Keep one synchronization policy for the test. If you need a global implicit wait, account for its interaction with every explicit wait; the safer default for modal workflows is explicit waits around each meaningful transition.
Handle intercepted clicks without hiding the problem
An intercepted click means another element covers the target’s center. A consent overlay, sticky header, modal backdrop, or transition animation can all cause it. Selenium documents this failure and related errors in Understanding common errors.
- Capture the exception and inspect the page at the failure point. Identify the element reported as the obstruction.
- Wait for that overlay to become invisible or for its animation to finish.
- Scroll the target into view if a sticky header or viewport position is blocking it.
- Re-find the element after a DOM transition; the old reference may be stale.
- Use Actions positioning when the target is reachable only after deliberate pointer movement.

raiseJavaScript arguments[0].click() bypasses WebDriver’s user-like interaction checks. It can be appropriate for a narrowly defined application test, but it should not be the default fix for an overlay or animation because it may conceal a real usability defect.
Reacquire elements after navigation or rerendering
After accepting consent, a page may reload, replace the banner, or update an iframe. A previously stored WebElement can then become stale. Store the locator, not just the element, and locate it again after the transition.

Cookie API versus clicking visible consent
Selenium can add, retrieve, and delete cookies through its cookie-management API. This is useful for setting up a test state or cleaning up between tests, but it is separate from clicking the visible consent choice. Selenium requires the browser to be on the cookie’s domain before adding it. See Working with cookies.

driver.delete_cookie("consent")Use the API when your scenario is “start with consent already recorded.” Use a real element click when your scenario is “verify that a user can see and operate the consent interface.” Keep those assertions separate so a setup shortcut does not falsely pass a UI test.
Make the workflow reliable in CI
- Use a clean, reproducible browser profile when testing first-visit consent.
- Set the test locale and viewport deliberately; responsive layouts can change which control is visible.
- Wait for a post-click condition, such as banner invisibility, a navigation completion, or an enabled page control.
- Log the current URL, alert text, and relevant HTML when a wait times out.
- Take a diagnostic screenshot on failure, not as a substitute for synchronization.
- Keep selectors resilient: accessible names and application-owned test attributes generally survive cosmetic redesigns better than generated class names.
- Do not assume every page has one banner. Some sites show regional consent, a separate privacy preference center, or a second modal after the first choice.
