Restarting Windows Font Cache Service is a reasonable first cache-related check, but Microsoft does not identify a corrupted font cache as the general cause of blurry text. First check whether the problem is limited to one app or font, then review display scaling and rendering; reserve manual cache-file deletion for an advanced fallback.
First identify what looks blurry
Check whether the blur appears in one app or throughout Windows, and whether it affects one font or all text. In Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Fonts to confirm that the font is installed. Microsoft notes that custom-font support varies by app, so a font that appears correctly in one program may not be supported or rendered the same way in another. Check display scaling and text rendering
If the issue is limited to Chromium-based browsers and affects Chinese, Japanese, or Korean (CJK) text, check whether the display is set to 96 DPI (100% scaling). Microsoft documented a specific Windows 11 case involving unclear CJK text in Chromium browsers after the March 2025 Preview Update added Noto fonts as fallback fonts. Microsoft points to limited pixel density as a factor and says increased display scaling improves clarity. Restart Windows Font Cache Service
Microsoft documents restarting this service as a Windows Search troubleshooting step, not as a guaranteed fix for blurry fonts. Because it is a service restart rather than deletion of protected files, it is a reasonable cache-related check when the symptom points to a possible cache issue.

- Press Windows key + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, find Windows Font Cache Service.
- Right-click it and choose Stop. If Windows asks for confirmation, approve the stop.
- After it stops, right-click the service again and choose Start.
- Reopen the app where the text looked blurry and check whether the display has changed.
If the service cannot be stopped or restarted, do not work around that by changing permissions or deleting files. Microsoft’s documented service restart appears in its Windows Search troubleshooting guidance.
Manual cache-file deletion is an advanced, uncertain fallback
An anonymous response on Microsoft Q&A suggests stopping Windows Font Cache Service and deleting files in C:WindowsServiceProfilesLocalServiceAppDataLocalFontCache and C:WindowsSystem32FNTCACHE.DAT, then restarting Windows. That is community guidance, not an official Microsoft procedure validated for blurry text. The response also says taking ownership of the folder may be necessary; changing ownership of protected system locations can create security or system-management problems.

For those reasons, do not casually take ownership of the folder or force deletion if Windows denies access. The official Windows material cited here does not establish that deleting these files fixes blurry text. See the Microsoft Q&A thread for the community suggestion and its context.

If blurry text is part of broader symptoms—such as missing or corrupted Windows components—Microsoft’s system-file repair guidance uses DISM before System File Checker (SFC). These commands check or repair Windows image and system-file problems; they are not routine font-cache-clearing commands.

Follow Microsoft’s instructions for repairing missing or corrupted system files. If the only symptom is blurry text in one app, start with that app’s font support and display settings instead.
