To remove temporary files in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, review the listed file types and sizes, select only what you want to delete, and choose Remove files. Windows does not have one setting called “temporary download cache”: temporary system files and files in your personal Downloads folder are different, and Downloads is not cleared by default.
Clear temporary files manually
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Temporary files. Wait while Windows calculates which categories are available and how much space they use.
- Review each category and its size. Select only the categories whose contents you are comfortable removing.
- Select Remove files and allow Windows to finish the cleanup.
The categories Windows shows depend on what is stored on your device. The space you recover will vary; there is no single amount that applies to every PC.
Review other cleanup recommendations
Windows can also suggest items to review under Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. The suggestions can include temporary files, large or unused files, cloud files, and unused apps. Review the proposed items and estimated savings, then use the cleanup control for the relevant section only if you want to remove those items.
Cleanup recommendations can include personal or useful content, not just disposable cache. Check what Windows proposes before confirming a cleanup.

Downloads files are not the same as temporary files
Your Downloads folder may contain documents, installers, photos, or other files you saved intentionally. To clear it, open the folder in File Explorer, inspect the contents, and delete only files you recognize and no longer need. Manual deletion may move files to the Recycle Bin; empty it if you want to reclaim that space immediately.
Do not assume that clearing Temporary files removes items from Downloads. Storage Sense also leaves Downloads alone unless you configure it to manage that folder.

Set up Storage Sense for automatic cleanup
Storage Sense is for future automatic maintenance, rather than a one-time review of temporary-file categories. Microsoft says it is off by default. When enabled with its default settings, it runs when disk space is low and works on the system drive, usually C:.

- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Turn on Storage Sense, then open its settings to review the available schedule and cleanup options.
- Choose how often it runs and, if you want it to manage Downloads, choose the age threshold for files there.
Downloads and cloud-provider files are not touched unless you configure Storage Sense to manage them. These settings apply to the signed-in user, so enabling Storage Sense does not mean every file in Downloads will automatically be deleted.

Check the consequence before removing a previous Windows installation
If Previous Windows installation(s) appears among the temporary-file categories, deleting it can remove your ability to go back to the previous Windows version. Microsoft warns this deletion cannot be undone for that rollback purpose, and administrator privileges may be required. Leave the category unselected if you may need to revert.

If the Temp folder quickly refills with Microsoft Store application package files and low-space errors continue, Microsoft documents a targeted Store-cache reset:

- Run
wsreset.exeto reset Microsoft Store and clear its cache. - Try Windows Update troubleshooting.
- Restart the PC.
This is a troubleshooting path for recurring Store-related files and persistent low-space errors, not a routine step for clearing temporary files.
Free space by moving personal files
If reviewing personal files shows that you need more room, you can move files you want to keep to external storage. This is optional and separate from clearing temporary files; an external drive is not required for the Windows cleanup steps above.
