Check your dishwasher’s owner’s manual before removing anything: filter designs and cleaning schedules vary by model, and some dishwashers use self-cleaning or maintenance-free filtration. If your model has a removable filter, rinse it under running water and gently brush away stubborn debris with a soft brush. Follow the manual’s instructions for removing and reinstalling every part.
First, identify your dishwasher’s filter system
Filters are commonly located at the bottom of the tub, but their design and removal steps differ. Consult your model’s owner’s manual for the correct filter type, removal directions, and any cautions before taking anything apart. Some models have a removable filter; others use self-cleaning or maintenance-free filtration and may have a foreign-object cup to empty when it fills. Whirlpool explains the difference between removable and maintenance-free systems.
How to clean a removable dishwasher filter
These are general cleaning steps, not universal removal instructions. Use your manual for the exact procedure. Whirlpool’s instructions, for example, cover a particular filter arrangement and should not be assumed to apply to every dishwasher.

- Check the manual. Confirm which parts are removable and how to release them. Remove the lower rack if the instructions call for it.
- Remove the filter as directed. In the Whirlpool configuration covered by its filter-cleaning instructions, the upper filter assembly turns a quarter-turn counterclockwise and lifts out; the lower filter then lifts and pulls forward. Do not apply this method to another model unless its manual says to.
- Rinse away loose soil. Hold the filter under running water. For stubborn food or mineral deposits, gently use a soft-bristled brush; Bosch also recommends mild soap in its filter-cleaning guidance.
- Avoid abrasive tools. Do not use wire brushes, scouring pads, or other abrasive implements that could damage the filter.
- Reinstall and lock every part. Put components back in their correct positions and secure them as the manual specifies. Whirlpool warns: “To avoid damage to the dishwasher, do not operate your dishwasher without the filters properly installed.”
How often should you clean the filter?
Follow the schedule in your dishwasher’s manual. Manufacturer guidance is not uniform: the intervals below apply to the models or instructions each manufacturer describes, not to every dishwasher.

A Whirlpool manual’s use-based schedule
Whirlpool owner manual W11532445 Rev C (2022) gives a schedule that varies with weekly loads and whether dishes are scraped, rinsed, or washed before loading. Its chart includes intervals ranging from twice yearly to every two months for the combinations it lists. The manual separately recommends cleaning at least monthly in very hard water above 15 grains. Those figures apply to the products covered by that manual, not to dishwashers generally. When to inspect the filter
Check the filter if you find visible debris on it, dishes remain dirty, wash performance declines, dishes feel gritty, or the dishwasher smells unpleasant. These are manufacturer-listed prompts to inspect the filter, though they do not prove it is the only cause of a problem. Whirlpool notes that a small amount of water remaining in the filter area can be normal, so that alone does not establish that the filter is clogged. What to do if your dishwasher has no removable filter
Do not try to dismantle a self-cleaning or maintenance-free filtration system as though it were a removable-filter design. Check the manual to see whether your model has a foreign-object cup that should be emptied when full, and follow the model-specific directions. Cleaning the dishwasher’s interior is a separate maintenance task; it does not replace cleaning a removable filter. Whirlpool describes approximately 30-day interior cleaning in its guidance for the covered system, but that is not a universal filter-cleaning interval.
