To clean install a graphics driver for streaming, first identify your GPU and download the correct driver, then use the GPU maker’s clean-install option and restart. Start with the vendor installer; use a separate cleanup utility only when a normal install fails or driver corruption is suspected. A clean install can help address driver-related symptoms, but it is not a guaranteed fix for dropped frames or encoding lag.
Before you begin
- Identify the GPU and Windows version. Open Device Manager → Display adapters to see the available graphics adapters. A PC may have more than one; note which GPU handles the game or application you stream. Microsoft explains the distinction between vendor drivers and the generic Microsoft Basic Display Adapter in its Basic Display Adapter guide.
- Choose the right package. Download the driver for the exact GPU and Windows version from NVIDIA, Intel, or AMD. On a laptop or branded PC, check the computer maker’s support page as well: manufacturers may customize driver features or packaging. Intel specifically advises checking with the computer manufacturer first for customized packages (Intel clean-install guide).
- Download before removing the current driver. Keep the installer available locally so you can proceed if Windows temporarily falls back to a basic display driver.
- Save your work and close apps. Close streaming software, games, browsers, video players, monitoring utilities, and tuning tools. NVIDIA notes that open applications—especially GPU monitoring, tuning, and 3D-accelerated apps—and Windows Update activity can interfere with its installation process (NVIDIA manual clean-install guide).
A clean driver install replaces display-driver software; it is not a clean installation of Windows. A Windows reinstall is a separate procedure that can remove personal files, apps, and settings (Microsoft’s Windows reinstall guide).
Use the graphics vendor’s clean-install option first
For a routine clean reinstall, the vendor installer is usually the simplest supported route. The exact wording can vary by package and Windows version, so follow the options in the current installer for your hardware.
NVIDIA
- Download the matching Game Ready Driver for your GPU from NVIDIA.
- Run the installer as administrator after closing open apps.
- Choose Custom (Advanced), then enable Perform a clean installation.
- Finish the installation and restart Windows.
NVIDIA’s cited manual procedure is for recovering from a failed NVIDIA App driver installation. It warns that open apps and Windows Update can disrupt setup. Its advice about temporarily pausing aggressive third-party real-time scanning applies to that particular procedure; it is not a general reason to disable security software. Microsoft Defender can remain enabled (NVIDIA’s instructions).

Intel
- Identify the Intel graphics product and download its matching driver. If this is an OEM laptop or PC, check the system maker’s driver first because it may include customizations.
- Run the Intel installer, select its clean-install checkbox if offered, and complete setup. Restart if prompted.
- If the checkbox is unavailable or the install does not resolve the issue, use Intel’s manual removal route below.
Intel says a clean installation removes old drivers, restores Intel settings to their defaults, and clears the shader cache. That guide was last reviewed September 9, 2026, and identifies a Windows 10 64-bit environment; check the current package and instructions for your own system (Intel clean-install guide).
AMD Radeon
If Radeon Software detects an existing version, its installer may offer Clean Install on the Custom Install screen. AMD says the option attempts to remove detected Radeon Software and AMD drivers before installing the selected components. It can help with common corrupted-install problems, but it also prevents using Device Manager to roll back to the previous driver (AMD Radeon install guidance).

If you need Radeon recording or streaming controls, check the install type offered by the current package. AMD’s installation-type documentation describes Full installation as including gaming, recording, streaming, and performance-tuning features, while Minimal and Driver Only omit some or all controls. The examples on that page are based on Adrenalin 21.4.1, so do not assume current labels or features are identical (AMD installation types).
When deeper cleanup is warranted
Intel manual removal
- Disconnect from the internet to reduce the chance Windows automatically installs a driver while you remove the current one.
- In Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the Intel graphics device, and choose Uninstall device. Select Delete the driver software for this device if that option appears.
- Restart the PC. Windows may temporarily show Microsoft Basic Display Adapter or Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.
- Run the Intel package you downloaded earlier, then restart if prompted.
Intel documents this route for cases where the installer’s clean option is unavailable or insufficient. The generic Intel package may differ from the customized driver supplied by a PC maker (Intel’s procedure).

AMD Cleanup Utility
AMD’s standalone Cleanup Utility is a more thorough option for removing AMD graphics and audio driver software. AMD recommends running it in Safe Mode for best results. It requires a reboot for cleanup to take effect, and a brief blank screen or flicker during cleanup is described as normal. AMD says the utility creates a System Restore Point and does not remove or modify AMD chipset drivers. It supports Windows 7 and later (AMD Cleanup Utility details).
Use this utility when ordinary installation or removal has failed or corruption is suspected—not as a mandatory step for every driver update. After cleanup and restart, install the correct Radeon package.

Verify the driver and test the streaming symptom
- Restart whenever the installer or cleanup utility requests it.
- Open Device Manager → Display adapters and confirm the intended GPU appears without an error. Check that Windows is not still using a generic adapter when the vendor driver should be installed.
- Run the same game or content, streaming application, encoder, output resolution, and frame rate you used before the change. Compare whether the specific symptom—such as rendering lag, encoding lag, or dropped frames—has changed.
This controlled before-and-after check helps separate a driver change from changes in stream settings or workload; it is not a claim that a clean install improves performance. Microsoft’s screen-flicker guidance suggests checking whether Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the display and lists updating, rolling back, or uninstalling a display driver as possible actions. It does not establish that reinstalling a driver fixes streaming problems (Microsoft screen-flicker troubleshooting).

- The installer does not offer a clean-install checkbox. Confirm you downloaded the package for the right GPU and Windows version. Intel’s manual removal procedure is an available fallback; for AMD, use its Cleanup Utility if deeper graphics-driver cleanup is needed.
- The install fails or stalls. Close GPU monitoring, tuning, 3D, and video apps; check whether Windows Update is active; then try the vendor’s manual guidance. Do not broadly disable security software. NVIDIA’s support page discusses a narrower exception for aggressive third-party real-time scanning during its specific recovery procedure.
- Windows shows a basic or standard VGA adapter after removal. This can be a temporary state before the downloaded vendor driver is installed. Complete the installation and restart as directed.
- The stream still drops frames or has encoding lag. A clean install is only one troubleshooting step. Compare the same workload and stream settings, then investigate the relevant game, encoder, application, or network cause rather than assuming the driver was responsible.
- A new driver makes the problem worse. Consider a vendor-supported rollback or the PC maker’s package. Keep in mind AMD says its Radeon Clean Install option removes the Device Manager rollback route.
- AMD cleanup causes flicker or a short blank screen. AMD describes this as normal during Cleanup Utility operation. Let the process finish and reboot as instructed.
