There is no universal cleaning recipe for foam headphone ear pads: follow the care instructions for your exact headphone model and pad material. Depending on the product, the maker may call for a dry cloth, a lightly damp cloth, or hand-washing a detached pad. Keep liquid away from the headphone housing and reinstall a washable pad only when it is completely dry.
Before cleaning, check the exact model’s instructions
Find the headphone model number and consult its current manual or manufacturer support page before using water, soap, wipes, or disinfectant. Directions differ even among removable pads: a method permitted for one model may damage another pad’s covering or expose its electronics to moisture.
Check whether the instructions apply to the pad material you have—foam, fabric, or leather—and whether they require the pads to remain attached. Turn off or disconnect the headset if its manual says to. Do not treat general cleaning advice as permission to use a method the model’s maker does not specify.
How to clean the pads without over-wetting them
- Prepare the headphones. Follow the manual’s instructions for powering off, disconnecting, and handling the pads. Keep the headphones away from sinks and other sources of splashing.
- Use only the stated cleaning method. If the maker allows wiping, use the specified cloth and moisture level. Apply moisture to the cloth rather than directly to the headphones, and clean gently. Keep liquid away from openings, drivers, microphones, and the housing.
- Remove pads only when instructed. Some pads can be cleaned or washed only after removal. Follow the model-specific removal and cleaning directions; do not assume a pad is washable just because it detaches.
- Dry before reattaching. If washing is expressly permitted, follow the specified method and let the pad dry fully. Reinstall it as directed, checking its orientation and fit.
Do not soak assembled headphones. Avoid solvents and unapproved cleaners unless the exact model’s official instructions explicitly authorize them.

Why cleaning directions vary by headphone
Dry-cloth and damp-cloth instructions
Sennheiser’s general guidance says to check the product documentation, avoid solvents, use a clean dry cloth, and not soak headphones. Its HMx 27 manual calls for a soft dry cloth and warns that liquids can damage the product. For the M3, the manual distinguishes materials: it says to use a soft dry cloth on non-leather parts, while allowing a clean soft cloth dampened with water for leather; it cautions against leather polish, detergents, and harsh soaps. When a manufacturer permits washing
JBL’s instructions for the Under Armour Project Rock over-ear training model allow the pads to be removed and hand-washed, but not machine-washed. The pads must dry completely before reattachment. Sennheiser likewise notes that some pads may be washed after removal, but directs users to the product manual for the applicable method. A product-specific wipe method
Sony’s care instructions for the WH-1000XM6 say to wipe sweat or moisture with 99% water-based wipes, avoid solvents such as thinner, benzene, or alcohol, and remove the pads only when necessary using the model’s procedure. When replacement is better than cleaning
Replace a pad if it is worn or damaged, or if it remains soiled after cleaning by the method its maker permits. Sennheiser describes soiled earpads as usually replaceable for hygiene, and its guidance notes that pads wear over time. Replacement intervals are not universal. Sennheiser’s HMx 27 manual advises yearly replacement for that headset. A 2023 3M technical data sheet for the PELTOR WS LiteCom Pro III recommends replacing covered foam liners and ear cushions at least twice a year when that equipment is regularly used. Check the fit when you reinstall or replace a pad
Removal methods, clips, rings, and left/right orientation vary by model. Use the manufacturer’s steps rather than prying or cutting at the pad. Once attached, check that the cushion sits evenly and is secure; incorrect fit can affect the connection or acoustics.
