Make the firearm safe and verify it is unloaded before cleaning. Then use the exact model’s owner’s manual to identify where grease may be wiped away and how to handle it; there is no universal solvent or disassembly method. Wipe accessible excess from permitted surfaces with a clean cloth or patch, and make sure the bore and chamber are clear before firing.
Make the firearm safe before cleaning
- Point the firearm in a safe direction and follow the unloading steps in its manual. Remove the magazine if applicable, open the action, and check the chamber and magazine area.
- Separate all ammunition from the firearm and the cleaning area. Visually verify that the chamber and magazine well are empty before you proceed. Springfield Armory and SIG Sauer both direct users to clear ammunition before cleaning: Springfield Armory XD-S manual and SIG Sauer Cross Magnum manual.
Check the manual for the affected part
Find the instructions for your firearm’s make and model before choosing a cleaner, lubricant, or disassembly step. Products that are safe for one finish or mechanism may not be suitable for another. Browning warns that chemicals can damage finishes and advises following the firearm’s instructions; Smith & Wesson likewise directs owners to the instructions supplied with their firearm (Browning owner’s manuals; Smith & Wesson owner’s manuals).
Do not take the firearm apart beyond the procedure its manual describes. If the grease is hardened, hidden in a mechanism, or in a location you cannot identify, stop and ask the manufacturer or a qualified gunsmith rather than improvising.
Wipe away accessible excess carefully
Where the manual permits, remove visible excess from accessible exterior or receiver surfaces with an appropriate clean, lint-free cloth or patch. Firearm cleaning patches and lint-free cleaning cloths are suitable wiping materials when allowed by the manual; Springfield lists cloths and patches among cleaning supplies, and Taurus advises removing excess oil and describes wiping normal-care surfaces with a lightly oiled cloth (Springfield Armory XD-S manual; Taurus firearm care).

Use only the cleaner specified or permitted by the manufacturer. SIG Sauer advises using products designed for firearms and following their directions. If applying cleaner with a patch or brush, do not leave it dripping wet: Springfield’s instructions say to wet the patch or brush and squeeze out excess. The amount of lubricant needed is also model-specific; Springfield cautions that excess oil can collect dirt and interfere with function, while Browning warns excess lubricant can impair pistol function (SIG Sauer Cross Magnum manual; Springfield Armory XD-S manual; Browning owner’s manuals).
Handle internal grease according to the model
Grease in the bore, chamber, trigger or striker area, or another internal component requires the exact procedure for that firearm. Do not assume it should be treated like excess on an exterior surface. For example, Springfield specifically warns against oil or grease on the striker in the cited XD-S instructions; that direction applies to those models, not automatically to every firearm. Follow the manual for your model, and seek qualified help if its procedure is unclear.

Thick preservation grease used for long-term storage is different from routine lubrication. CZ manual guidance says preserving grease intended for demanding, long-term storage should be thoroughly removed before use. Apply this only where the manual for your firearm says it is relevant.

Before use, follow the manual’s checks and ensure the bore and chamber contain no grease or other obstruction. Smith & Wesson says to wipe preservative and oil from the bore and chamber before use. Glenfield warns that firing with oil, grease, or other material partly obstructing the bore may damage the rifle and cause serious injury (Smith & Wesson owner’s manuals; Glenfield instruction manual).
