Lift it gently with a wooden spoon, then wash with dish soap and a soft sponge. For stubborn food, add baking soda to the water; avoid steel wool and steel scouring pads, which All-Clad cautions against for stainless steel.
Start by cooling and soaking the pan
Let the pan cool before cleaning. All-Clad warns that running cold water over hot cookware can cause it to warp. Once cool, cover the stuck food with warm water and let it soak, or put about half an inch of water in the pan and simmer it for a few minutes, as Tramontina’s care guidance recommends.
As the residue softens, gently nudge it with a wooden or silicone spatula. Do not force a stuck patch off by scrubbing harder: loosening it with water and heat first reduces the need for aggressive tools. All-Clad’s care guide recommends warm soapy water and a sponge or soft cloth for ordinary washing.
Use baking soda for tougher burnt food
If simmering plain water does not loosen the burnt layer, add baking soda to the water and bring it to a boil. All-Clad advises using a wooden spoon to loosen food particles; Tramontina likewise recommends baking soda in simmering water for tougher residue. Stir and scrape gently rather than pressing or grinding the residue against the pan.

After the food releases, wash the pan with dish soap and a soft sponge or cloth, rinse thoroughly, and dry it. All-Clad recommends drying immediately to help prevent water spots.
Escalate carefully if marks remain
For persistent marks after soaking or simmering, a cookware-maker-approved, nonabrasive cleanser is an optional next step—not a necessary first treatment. All-Clad names its cookware cleaner, Bar Keepers Friend, and Bon Ami for tough marks; Tramontina also names Bar Keepers Friend. Follow the cleaner’s label and your pan’s care instructions. The manufacturers provide care advice, not a comparative test establishing that one cleanser works best on every stainless-steel pan.

When the product instructions allow it, form a paste, apply it with a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse and dry the pan. Use only light pressure. A nylon cookware scrub pad or nylon pan scraper may be suitable for stubborn patches if the maker permits it; Tramontina identifies a nylon scraper, and All-Clad allows a nylon scouring pad for more difficult stainless-steel cleaning.
Choose the gentlest method that matches the residue

Tools and cleaners to avoid
- Do not use steel wool or steel scouring pads. All-Clad specifically cautions against them for stainless-steel cookware.
- Avoid harsh cleaners. All-Clad also cautions against oven cleaners, harsh detergents, and detergents containing bleach or peroxide.
- Prefer soft contact. Use a soft sponge or cloth first. If a nylon pad or scraper is permitted for your pan, use it gently.
- Check the care guide for your exact pan. Manufacturer advice can vary by construction, finish, and product line.
Burnt food is different from discoloration
This procedure addresses food stuck or carbonized on the cooking surface. Rainbow heat tint and cloudy white hard-water spots are different marks: All-Clad recommends white vinegar for rainbow discoloration and a one-to-one vinegar-and-water solution for white hard-water spots. Those treatments are not substitutes for loosening burnt food.
