Start with dry tools: let the suede dry completely, brush away loose dirt gently, and use a suede eraser only on a small, dry scuff. This is the most cautious general approach, but no general suede-care guide can guarantee that a particular blue dye will not fade. Check the sneaker maker’s care instructions and test any cleaner or spray on a hidden area first.
What you need before you start
- A clean, soft suede or nubuck brush.
- A suede eraser for isolated dry marks, if needed.
- A suede cleaner or protector spray only if the shoe maker’s instructions allow it.
- A clean, dry place to work and let the shoes dry naturally.
Saucony recommends a soft-bristle brush for suede or nubuck, while Björn Borg advises brushing off loose dirt before adding moisture or cleaning products. Adidas also says its suede-sneaker cleaning procedure should be done while the shoes are dry. These are general suede-care directions, not tests of every blue dye or finish.
How to clean blue suede sneakers
- Check the maker’s care instructions. Follow any shoe-specific restrictions before using a product or tool. If the instructions are unclear, keep to gentle dry cleaning rather than assuming a liquid cleaner is safe for the color.
- Make sure the suede is dry. Remove the laces if they get in the way. Adidas specifies dry suede for its cleaning process; do not begin by wetting the shoe.
- Brush off loose dirt. Use a clean, soft suede or nubuck brush and work gently. Saucony and Björn Borg both recommend brushing to remove loose dirt. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, which can rough up the nap.
- Try an eraser on a small, dry scuff. Rub a suede eraser gently over the mark, then brush the area again to smooth the nap. ECCO and Björn Borg include erasers among suede-care tools, and Adidas recommends erasing followed by brushing. This is for localized dry marks; it is not a guarantee of removing every stain.
- Consider cleaner only if the mark remains. First check the shoe maker’s directions. ECCO describes a dedicated suede cleaner for more intensive care, but its guidance does not establish compatibility with every blue dye. Test the product on a hidden area and check for a color change before treating a visible section.
- Let treated shoes dry naturally. Once fully dry, brush gently to restore the nap. The cited general guides do not establish a blue-suede drying procedure or a colorfastness guarantee.

Can water or cleaner fade blue suede?
Blue suede’s response depends on the particular dye and finish. The brand guides cited here cover suede generally; they do not certify a specific blue sneaker as colorfast or prove that a cleaner is safe for every blue suede shoe. A hidden-area test can reveal an obvious color change before you treat a more visible part of the shoe, but it does not guarantee that the whole sneaker will remain unchanged. If the maker advises against a product, do not use it just because it is labeled for suede.

Saucony says waterproofing treatment may be used on suede or nubuck if desired. A suede protector spray is optional, not a promise against fading or staining. Check both the sneaker maker’s guidance and the spray label, then test it on a hidden area before applying it more broadly.
