Switch off your cordless vacuum and disconnect it from its charger or power source before removing any parts. Then follow the manual for your exact model: brush-roll access, washable components, approved cleaning methods, and maintenance intervals vary by vacuum. The steps below explain a safe general workflow and identify where manufacturer-specific instructions apply.
Before you start: check your vacuum’s manual
Use the owner’s manual to confirm how to remove the brush roll and filters, which parts can be rinsed, which tools are permitted, and how often maintenance is recommended. Do not assume a procedure for one brand or model applies to another. Keep the vacuum switched off and disconnected from its charger or power source while you work.
How to clean the brush roll
- Remove the roller as instructed. Use the release mechanism described in your vacuum’s manual. Some Dyson cleaner heads, for example, use a coin or flathead screwdriver to open the brush cover; that method is not universal. Dyson’s brush-bar guidance also says not to wash certain brush-bar end caps. Rinse a roller only if the instructions for your exact cleaner head say it is washable.
- Clear wrapped hair and fibers carefully. Remove debris without pulling hard on bristles or damaging the roller, belt, seals, or soft-roller covering. Use a cleaning tool only if the manufacturer permits it. Tineco’s maintenance illustrations show a hair-cleaning tool used to remove wrapped debris; check that any tool you use is suitable for your model. - Check the brush window and suction opening. Remove visible debris from these areas using the method approved for your vacuum. Tineco’s illustrated procedure includes cleaning the brush window and suction mouth.
- Reinstall and secure the roller. Align it and close or lock the cover as the manual directs. Do not force a part that does not seat properly.
How to clean a filter
Wash a filter only if the manufacturer identifies it as washable. A filter that looks similar to a washable one may require a different method, so check the model instructions before putting it under water.

Dyson recommends washing its cordless vacuum filters at least once a month. Its filter-care instructions say to remove the filter, tap off loose dust, rinse it, and gently rub it by hand without detergent. Shake out excess water afterward. This monthly interval and method are Dyson-specific, not a universal schedule for cordless vacuums.

For other brands and models
Follow the instructions for the exact vacuum. Tineco’s maintenance PDF illustrates removing its HEPA filter, washing it under running water if necessary, and drying it completely before reinstalling; the illustration indicates a 24-hour drying period. Do not extend that procedure to filters that are not designated washable.
Dry the filter completely before reinstalling it
A washed filter must be fully dry before it goes back into the vacuum. Dyson specifies at least 24 hours in a well-ventilated area with airflow and warns that a wet filter could damage the motor. Dyson’s guidance states: “Your filter(s) must be completely dry before you put it back into the machine, or it could damage the motor.” Do not use a tumble dryer, microwave, or naked flame to dry a Dyson filter.

Reassemble and check the vacuum
Make sure the filter, brush roll, and any covers are seated and locked according to the manual before switching the vacuum on. If suction is still poor, the vacuum pulses, or a warning remains, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions for your exact model instead of continuing to disassemble it. Dyson associates filter buildup with reduced performance or pulsing on its equipment; that diagnosis should not be assumed to apply to every vacuum.

When to clean the brush roll and filter
There is no cross-brand schedule established for cleaning brush rolls. Check for visible hair or debris buildup and follow the interval in your model’s manual. Dyson’s recommendation to wash cordless filters at least once a month applies to Dyson cordless models, not all brands.

Choosing a cleaning tool or replacement filter
A hair-cleaning tool can be useful for wrapped debris if your vacuum’s manual permits it. For a replacement filter or other part, verify the precise model compatibility and part number before buying. Dyson suggests considering a spare filter so one can be used while the original dries; compatibility still depends on the exact vacuum.
