Clean an espresso machine with a steam wand in three separate ways: wipe and purge the wand after steaming milk, clean the brew path with a backflush only if your machine supports it, and run the machine’s own descaling program to remove mineral scale. The controls, approved descaler, rinse steps, and timing vary by model, so use the exact manual rather than a universal recipe.
Clean the steam wand after every milk-steaming session
Milk residue can dry on the wand and tip, so clean them promptly after use. Follow your machine’s manual. For example, the Breville BES980 manual recommends wiping the wand and tip with a damp cloth and purging immediately after each use. It warns that failing to clean the wand may affect milk-texturing performance. The manual’s example applies to that model; do not assume another machine uses the same purge duration or controls.
Clear a blocked steam tip separately
A blocked tip is not the same problem as mineral scale. For the Breville BES980, the manual says to turn the steam control off and use the supplied steam-tip cleaning tool to clear obstructed holes. If the blockage remains, it describes removing the tip and using the specified steam-wand cleaning powder: soak the wand and tip for 20 minutes, briefly activate steam, soak for a further 5 minutes, then rinse, refit the tip tightly, purge, and rinse the wand. This is that manual’s model-specific procedure, not a general cleaning method.
Backflush only when your machine supports it
Backflushing clears loose grounds and coffee oils from a compatible brew path. It does not clean milk residue from the steam wand or remove mineral deposits. Check your manual before attempting it; do not use a cleaning disc or backflush cycle on a machine unless its instructions call for one.

Manufacturer instructions illustrate how the procedure varies. Breville recommends a clear-water backflush after each brewing session for the Barista Express. The BES980 manual describes a cleaning disc and five 20-second pressure cycles. Those instructions apply to the respective models.
Descale with the exact model’s instructions
Use the descale indicator and the manual for your precise make and model. The machine may specify which outlets the cycle treats, where to place containers, how to start the program, which descaler to use, and how to rinse afterward. Do not send descaling solution through the steam wand unless that model’s instructions direct you to do so.

De’Longhi La Specialista Opera
The manufacturer’s La Specialista Opera FAQ recommends EcoDecalk, using a water-hardness test, and placing containers under outlets that include the steam wand. De’Longhi warns that an unsuitable descaler or an incorrect descaling process may cause faults not covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee. Follow the FAQ and the manual for your specific machine rather than transferring another model’s steps.
Breville BES840
The Breville BES840 manual gives its own procedure, including one sachet dissolved in one litre of water, a sequence involving the coffee, steam, and hot-water components, and a fresh-water cycle after the solution cycle. These quantities and steps are specific to that manual; they are not a general dosage or sequence.

Gaggia Classic E24
Gaggia’s Classic E24 page tells owners to follow the booklet and use Gaggia descaler. This is another model-specific recommendation, not a universal chemical choice.
Rinse and keep the maintenance jobs distinct
After descaling, follow the manual’s rinse directions, including any instructions to empty and rinse the tank or flush fresh water through particular circuits. For the BES840, the manual specifically calls for a fresh-water cycle after the descaling solution cycle.

- After steaming milk: wipe and purge the wand as directed by the manual.
- For brew-path residue: backflush only if the manual supports that procedure.
- For mineral scale: run the exact model’s descaling procedure and required rinse.
How often should you descale?
There is no single interval established for every espresso machine, water hardness, and usage pattern. Follow your machine’s descale indicator and manual, including any water-hardness setting or test it specifies. The available manufacturer instructions do not support applying one schedule to all machines.
