Empty the bin, wash it with soap or detergent and water, scrub away residue, rinse, and let it dry completely. That is usually enough for routine cleaning; the CDC says soap-and-water cleaning removes most germs from surfaces and that home disinfection is generally unnecessary unless someone is sick or recently visited while sick.
How to clean a garbage bin
- Empty it. Remove the liner and loose debris. Lift out stuck-on waste if you can do so safely.
- Wash it. Use soap or household detergent and water on the inside and outside. Scrub residue with a household brush; cleaning involves soap, water, and scrubbing, according to the CDC’s home-cleaning guidance.
- Rinse it. Rinse away loosened dirt and cleaner so residue does not remain on the surface.
- Dry it fully. Let the bin drain and dry before putting in a fresh liner. A wet bin can trap wash water beneath the new bag.
How to get a lingering smell out
Start by removing residue and washing the bin; trapped food or grime may be contributing to the odor. If the smell remains, check both the bin maker’s care instructions and the cleaner’s label. Use a deodorizing product only if its label specifically allows garbage-can use and the bin material is compatible.
Some bleach labels include garbage-can deodorizing directions, but they are not interchangeable. For example, an EPA-hosted label for one 8.25% bleach product directs users to wash and rinse first, then brush the inside with solution, empty the bin, and let it drain; its stated deodorizing dilution is 1/2 cup per gallon of water. Another product label gives a different dilution and calls for a two-minute wait followed by rinsing. These are directions for those particular products, not a universal bleach recipe. Follow the current label on your product and the bin maker’s guidance.
When to disinfect—and how to do it safely
Routine household cleaning usually does not require a separate disinfecting step. The CDC says cleaning alone with soap and water is sufficient in most situations; home disinfection is generally unnecessary unless someone is sick or recently visited while sick. If illness or a specific contamination concern makes disinfection appropriate, clean visible dirt first, then choose a product labeled for the surface and purpose.

- Use ventilation when working indoors and wear any protective equipment required by the label.
- Check whether the label requires rinsing or air drying, and whether the bin material is compatible.
The CDC’s fallback dilution guidance applies only when bottle directions are unavailable and the product is regular, unscented household bleach containing 5%–9% sodium hypochlorite: 5 tablespoons (1/3 cup) per gallon of room-temperature water. That general guidance does not override a product label or establish that bleach is suitable for every garbage bin.
Choose the right treatment for the job

U.S. CDC guidance and EPA-hosted product labels are the basis for these directions. The cited EPA labels date from 2017, so check current packaging; formulations, labels, and availability can change, and directions outside the United States may differ.
