After a workout, wipe sweat from your earbuds, clean removable tips and charging contacts only as their manufacturer directs, and let everything dry completely before charging or putting it away. Sweat resistance is not waterproofing: care instructions vary by model, and moisture in a charging case can damage it.
What you need before you start
- A soft, clean cloth; use a lint-free cloth if available.
- Dry cotton swabs for contacts only when the manufacturer recommends them.
- For removable tips, only the cleaning materials and method specified for your exact model and tip material.
Do not assume that a method allowed for one brand or model is safe for another. For example, Sony’s general Headphones Maintenance Tips guidance permits hand-washing some tips in neutral detergent and water, while the Jabra Elite 7 Pro FAQ describes a slightly damp warm-water swab for its EarGels. These are model-specific directions, not universal instructions.
How to clean earbuds after a workout
- Remove the earbuds and wipe them down. Use a soft, clean cloth to remove sweat and moisture from the exterior. Apple recommends cleaning and drying the named Beats earbuds after workouts or heavy sweating.
- Inspect the sound openings and contacts. Check for earwax, dust, sweat, or moisture. Clean carefully around mesh and openings without pushing debris inward. Sony’s maintenance guidance warns that buildup can affect sound and that moisture or residue on contacts can interfere with charging.
- Clean charging contacts only as directed. If your model’s guide recommends it, gently use a dry cotton swab or soft, dry cloth on the contacts. Jabra specifies a dry swab for the Elite 7 Pro case pins and earbud poles; Sony also recommends dry tools for contacts. Do not use a wet swab on charging contacts.
- Clean removable tips according to their instructions. Remove tips only if the manufacturer says they are removable and explains how to clean them. The Jabra Elite 7 Pro FAQ allows a swab slightly dampened with warm water on its EarGels and requires them to air-dry completely. Sony’s general guidance describes hand-washing some tips with neutral detergent and water, then drying them thoroughly. Do not apply either method to tips with different care instructions.
- Let everything dry fully before charging or storage. Keep liquids away from sound openings, microphones, and charging connectors. Wait until the earbuds and any cleaned tips are completely dry before placing the earbuds in the case or charging them.
- Put dry earbuds away in their case. Jabra recommends case storage when its earbuds are not in use to keep them off dusty or dirty surfaces.
What to avoid while cleaning
- Do not rinse or submerge earbuds unless the exact model’s instructions explicitly allow it. A resistance rating is not permission to wash them.
- Do not force a swab or tool into sound openings, mesh, or microphone ports; that can push debris farther inside.
- Do not use compressed air on Beats models covered by Apple’s cleaning guidance. Sony also warns against compressed air for the WF-1000XM4 in its model-specific care instructions.
- For the Beats models covered by Apple’s cleaning and care instructions, avoid heat drying, sharp objects, and abrasive materials, and keep liquid out of openings.
- Do not put wet earbuds in a charging case. Sony says its charging case is not water-resistant and warns that charging wet earbuds can cause a short circuit or corrosion in the case.
Why drying before charging matters
Moisture on charging contacts can prevent reliable charging, and moisture inside a case can harm its components. Sony’s maintenance guidance advises letting earbuds dry before charging; it warns that charging wet earbuds can cause a short circuit or corrosion in the case. Keep the case itself dry as well.
When to replace tips
If removable tips are clogged or heavily soiled and cannot be cleaned as instructed, replacement may be appropriate. Sony recommends replacing clogged or heavily soiled tips. Check the exact earbud model and tip type before buying replacement tips or EarGels, because parts are not necessarily interchangeable.

Water and sweat resistance: check the exact model
Resistance claims do not mean that earbuds are waterproof or sweatproof. Apple states that the Beats Studio Buds, Beats Studio Buds +, Beats Fit Pro, and Powerbeats Fit are “sweat and water resistant, but not sweatproof or waterproof”; Apple also says their charging case is not water-resistant. That warning applies to those named Beats products, not every workout earbud. For other models, check the manufacturer’s instructions for the earbuds and case separately.
