Turn the monitor off, unplug it, and gently wipe the screen with a clean, soft microfiber cloth. Use light pressure and do not spray liquid on the display. For a mark that will not come off with a dry cloth, check the manual for your exact monitor model before using water or any cleaner: OLED branding alone does not determine which cleaning method is safe.
What to use for routine cleaning
Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth to remove dust and light marks. Work gently with broad, controlled strokes in a consistent direction. LG’s monitor guidance warns that excessive force may cause scratches or discoloration. A dedicated cleaning kit is not needed for routine cleaning; LG says special products are unnecessary for periodic cleaning of its OLED, 4K, or LED TVs. That statement is TV-specific, but supports keeping your basic routine simple.
How to clean the screen
- Turn off and unplug the monitor. Unplug its power cord, as LG’s monitor instructions advise. If it has been running, let the screen cool before you clean it.
- Wipe gently with a dry microfiber cloth. Use light pressure and steady strokes to lift away dust and routine marks. Avoid scrubbing or pressing hard on the panel.
- Stop if a mark remains. Before adding moisture or a cleaning agent, consult the owner’s manual for your exact make and model. Follow its instructions for permitted products and how to apply them.
- Keep liquid off the display itself. Never spray the screen. If the manual permits a liquid, apply it to the cloth as directed and use only the amount specified; do not let liquid run toward the screen edges.
- Let the screen dry as directed. Follow the manual’s drying and reconnection instructions before plugging in or turning on the monitor.
Why the exact model’s instructions matter
Manufacturer directions are not uniform, even for OLED displays. LG’s U.S. monitor guidance, published December 8, 2023, says not to spray water on the screen or wipe it with a wet cloth. It also warns against detergents, automotive or industrial polish, abrasives, wax, benzene, and alcohol. By contrast, Dell’s instructions for a specific Alienware OLED monitor return procedure permit distilled water or 70% ethanol on a clean cloth for the screen area, while still warning not to spray the monitor directly and cautioning against other cleaners. That return-procedure exception is not general guidance for all Alienware monitors—or OLED monitors generally.

LG’s separate OLED TV guidance recommends a slightly damp cloth for stubborn TV-screen stains. Because that advice is for LG TVs, do not assume it applies to an OLED monitor. For any stubborn monitor stain, use the instructions for that precise model rather than borrowing a method from another brand or product category.

Cleaning mistakes to avoid
- Spraying the display: Liquid can run into the device. Apply a permitted liquid to a cloth only if the monitor’s manual directs you to do so.
- Using pressure to remove a stubborn mark: Excess force can scratch or discolor the screen.
- Assuming a familiar cleaner is safe: Water, alcohol, and screen-cleaning products are not approved for every model. Check first.
- Using paper towels or abrasive materials: Choose a clean, soft microfiber cloth instead.
- Applying advice for a TV or another monitor: Cleaning instructions can differ by model and use case; follow your monitor’s own manual.
