You don’t need a screen protector to clean a MacBook display safely. Shut down the MacBook, unplug its power adapter, then gently wipe the screen with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water only. For hard-to-remove fingerprints, Apple permits a cloth moistened with a 70-percent isopropyl alcohol solution.
What you need before cleaning
- A clean, soft, lint-free cloth, such as a microfiber cloth.
- Water for routine cleaning.
- For persistent fingerprints only, a cloth that can be moistened with a 70-percent isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution.
Apple’s method applies to MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air screens. A screen protector is not required. If your Mac has a nano-texture display, follow Apple’s separate nano-texture cleaning instructions rather than assuming the standard-display method applies. Apple: How to clean your Apple products
How to clean the screen
- Shut down and disconnect the MacBook. Unplug the power adapter and disconnect connected devices before you begin.
- Dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with water only. Do not pour or spray water onto the display or the computer; the cloth should be damp, not dripping.
- Wipe the screen gently. Avoid excessive rubbing, the display edges, and any openings where moisture could enter.
- Use IPA only if a mark remains. For hard-to-remove smudges or fingerprints, Apple allows a cloth moistened with a 70-percent IPA solution. Wipe gently; do not spray alcohol or cleaner directly on the display.
- Let the screen dry before closing the MacBook. This is a practical precaution to keep moisture from reaching openings.
What not to use on a MacBook screen
Apple advises against abrasive cloths, towels, paper towels, excessive wiping, aerosol sprays, bleach, and abrasive products. Its Mac screen guidance also rules out window cleaners, household cleaners, solvents, ammonia, acetone-containing cleaners, and products containing hydrogen peroxide. Do not spray any cleaner directly on the screen: liquid can drip inside the display and cause damage.
For routine cleaning, water on the cloth is the specified option; the IPA solution is limited to stubborn marks. Avoid substituting a general-purpose screen cleaner for either method. Apple: Clean your Mac computer’s screen or display
