Switch off and unplug your food chopper before cleaning. Remove its bowl, lid and blade only as the manual directs, and keep your fingers away from the blade’s sharp edges. Wash removable parts by hand or in the dishwasher only when the instructions for your exact model allow it; wipe the motor base with a damp cloth and never immerse it.
Before cleaning: disconnect power and check the manual
Turn the chopper off and disconnect it from its power source before removing parts or cleaning. KitchenAid’s corded chopper instructions say to unplug the appliance first. For cordless models, the required steps can differ: KitchenAid directs users to set the controller to O and unplug the unit from charging before disassembly; some designs may also require battery removal or a cooldown. Follow the instructions for your model rather than assuming all cordless choppers work alike. KitchenAid’s corded chopper cleaning instructions and its cordless chopper instructions give examples of these differences.
Find the exact model number and consult its official manual for the disassembly method, dishwasher permission and any charging, battery or cooling requirements. Do not force parts apart if they do not release as expected.
How to clean the blade and bowl
- Switch off and disconnect the chopper. Unplug a corded model. For a cordless model, use the controller, charging and battery steps specified in its manual.
- Remove the parts as directed. Take off the bowl, lid, blade and attachments using the model’s stated procedure. Handle the blade by a safe part of its assembly, not by its cutting edge. Philips warns: “Do not touch the cutting edges of the chopper blade unit when you handle or clean it. They are very sharp and you could easily cut your fingers on them.” Philips chopper manual (PDF).
- Clear stuck food without reaching into the bowl. Never put your fingers into the bowl to remove food. Make sure the appliance is unplugged and the blade is stationary; use an appropriate utensil if needed, keeping hands clear of the edge. KitchenAid’s safety instructions also say to use a scraper only when the appliance is not running. KitchenAid safety instructions (PDF).
- Wash removable parts by a permitted method. If the manual allows handwashing, use hot, soapy water, then rinse and dry the parts. Use a dishwasher only if the manual for your exact chopper says the part is dishwasher safe, and follow any rack-placement or temperature directions.
- Clean the motor base without getting it wet inside. Wipe it with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the motor base in water.
- Dry and store safely. Dry the removable parts and reassemble or store them as the manual directs, keeping the blade protected from accidental contact.
Can you put a food chopper blade and bowl in the dishwasher?
Sometimes, but permission is model-specific and may apply only to particular removable parts. KitchenAid lists the bowl, lid and blade of its cited corded chopper as dishwasher safe and recommends the top rack. Its cited cordless instructions also list the bowl, lid, accessories and blade as top-rack safe. These examples do not establish that other choppers—or every part of those models—can go in a dishwasher. Tefal likewise advises that dishwasher suitability depends on the product; check the instructions for your Tefal product or the manual for your own model.

Handwashing is an option when the manufacturer permits it. For KitchenAid’s cited corded chopper, the removable parts can be washed in hot, soapy water, rinsed and dried. For another model, use only the cleaning method and any rack or cycle guidance specified in its manual.
What not to do
- Do not start cleaning while the chopper is plugged in or connected to charging.
- Do not touch the blade’s cutting edges or reach into the bowl with your fingers, even when food is stuck.
- Do not assume a part is dishwasher safe because a similar-looking chopper allows it.
- Do not immerse the motor base or let water enter it.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners if the model’s manufacturer advises against them.
Why the instructions vary by model
Food choppers differ in how their blades and other parts detach, whether removable parts can go in a dishwasher, and what a cordless unit requires before cleaning. Manufacturer guidance illustrates the variation: KitchenAid gives top-rack directions for the cited models, while Tefal says dishwasher suitability depends on the product. Use these as examples, not universal rules. If your manual is unavailable or does not clearly say whether a part is dishwasher safe, do not assume that it is.
