To claim input tax credit (ITC) under Indian GST, reconcile your purchase records with the GST Portal’s GSTR-2B, check each document and transaction against the legal eligibility rules, calculate any required reversals, and report the result in the appropriate fields of GSTR-3B. GSTR-2B helps with that process, but a listed invoice is not automatically eligible credit—and an entry missing from it is not, by itself, a complete legal ruling.

What GSTR-2B does—and what it does not

GSTR-2B is a static, read-only, auto-drafted ITC statement. It is generated using information filed by suppliers and input service distributors (ISDs), along with specified import information. The recipient does not file GSTR-2B and cannot edit it or add a missing document. The GST Portal says it should be used to take the right ITC in the relevant sections of GSTR-3B. GST Portal: GSTR-2B user guide

Use the statement as a reconciliation aid, not as a substitute for your books or the legal eligibility review. The portal’s availability indicators do not test every possible restriction, and an invoice appearing in GSTR-2B does not establish that all conditions for claiming its tax have been met. How to claim ITC: a practical workflow

  1. Collect the relevant documents and purchase records

Keep your books and the tax document for each purchase. Depending on the transaction, prescribed documents can include a supplier tax invoice, debit note, bill of entry, or ISD document. The document must meet the applicable prescribed requirements; possession of a document alone does not establish eligibility. CBIC: CGST Rules, Part A

  2. Download the GSTR-2B for the return period

Retrieve the relevant period’s statement from the GST Portal and retain it with your reconciliation records. It is an auto-drafted statement for review, not a return to submit or a document you can correct yourself. GST Portal: GSTR-2B user guide

  3. Reconcile each document against your books

Compare supplier GSTIN, document number and date, taxable value, tax amounts, amendments, and credit notes. Investigate differences and omissions; where supplier reporting needs correction, follow up with the supplier. Keep a record of the resolution and avoid claiming the same credit twice. The GST Portal advises reconciling GSTR-2B with books and records and avoiding duplicate ITC. GST Portal: GSTR-2B FAQs

Do not claim an item solely because it appears in GSTR-2B, and do not treat a portal “not available” classification as an exhaustive list of every circumstance affecting eligibility. 5. Calculate required reversals and any potential reclaims

Account for credit notes, ineligible amounts, and reversals required by the rules. The GST Portal also reminds taxpayers to pay tax due on reverse-charge supplies. CBIC’s guidance distinguishes permanent reversals—for example, specified blocked or exempt-use credit—from certain temporary reversals that may be reclaimed after the relevant condition is fulfilled. A potential reclaim is conditional, not automatic. GST Portal: GSTR-2B FAQs CBIC Circular 170/02/2022-GST

Check any auto-populated values against your reconciliation. The portal may allow figures to be edited, but editing a figure does not make the underlying credit eligible. Retain the documents and working papers supporting the figures you report. GST Portal: GSTR-2B user guide CBIC Circular 170/02/2022-GST

  7. Check the claim deadline

Under the general current rule in Section 16(4), the time limit is the earlier of 30 November following the end of the relevant financial year or the date the relevant annual return is furnished. Common ITC filing errors and how to correct them

  • Claiming every GSTR-2B entry: Check the transaction’s actual use, supporting document, statutory conditions, and any blocked-credit restriction before including it.
  • Treating GSTR-2B as the whole eligibility test: Apply the law independently and account for restrictions or reversals that may not be captured by the statement’s indicators.
  • Skipping reconciliation or claiming an invoice twice: Match document-level details to the books, review amendments and credit notes, and preserve the reconciliation trail.
  • Ignoring reversals or assuming a reclaim is automatic: Use the applicable GSTR-3B Table 4 treatment and distinguish permanent reversals from conditional reversals that may be reclaimed only after the relevant condition is satisfied.
  • Forgetting reverse charge: Identify reverse-charge supplies and pay the tax due as required; do not treat the GSTR-2B credit statement as a substitute for that obligation.
  • Trying to fix a supplier omission by editing GSTR-2B: The statement is read-only. Follow up with the supplier, retain the evidence, and assess any claim under the applicable law rather than trying to add the document to the statement.
  • Relying on an outdated September cutoff: For the general current rule, use the 30 November or annual-return deadline, whichever is earlier, while checking for applicable special provisions. CBIC: CGST Act, Section 16 CBIC Circular 237/31/2024-GST
