Yes—if your business is registered under India’s GST system, you may claim input tax credit (ITC) on an online purchase when it is eligible for business use, you hold the required supplier tax document, the other statutory conditions are met, and no blocked-credit rule applies. Buying through a marketplace does not itself make a purchase eligible: check the seller’s invoice and supplier-reported invoice details, commonly visible in GSTR-2B, before claiming.
Who can claim ITC on an online business purchase?
A GST-registered person may claim eligible input tax charged on goods or services used, or intended to be used, in the course or furtherance of business. The platform is only the purchase channel; the buyer’s eligibility depends on the supply, its use, the supporting document, supplier reporting, and return compliance. The general conditions are set out in Section 16 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.
For a purchase used partly for private purposes or for making exempt supplies, the full tax amount is not generally creditable; the eligible portion must be determined under the applicable rules. A marketplace order confirmation is not a substitute for the prescribed tax document or the eligibility conditions.
How to check and claim credit
- Confirm the buyer and business use. The claimant must be GST-registered. Identify whether the item or service is for business, personal, or mixed use, and whether it supports taxable, zero-rated, or exempt supplies. Credit for non-business or exempt-use portions is restricted under the blocked-credit and apportionment provisions.
- Obtain the supplier’s tax invoice or prescribed document. Keep the supplier-issued document, not only the platform receipt or order confirmation. Check the supplier and recipient particulars, invoice number and date, description, taxable value, GST rate and amount, and recipient GSTIN where relevant. The GST rules describe the required documents and invoice particulars.
- Reconcile the invoice with supplier-reported details. Compare the purchase document with the recipient-side invoice information on the GST portal, commonly GSTR-2B. If the record is missing or inaccurate, contact the seller to correct the reporting or invoice details before claiming. Do not assume that an online order receipt alone establishes eligibility.
- Check blocked-credit rules and exceptions. Review Section 17 before claiming. It restricts credit for specified categories, including certain motor vehicles, food and beverages, club or fitness memberships, some insurance or rent-a-cab services, travel benefits, and certain construction costs. The provisions contain exceptions, so eligibility depends on the precise transaction and statutory conditions.
- Report eligible credit through the return process and retain records. Claim the eligible amount in the applicable GST return process and keep the invoice and supporting accounts records. The Act’s recordkeeping provisions require records that include input tax and ITC claimed. Portal labels and return-table references can change; use current official GST portal guidance for the relevant tax period rather than relying on an outdated click path.
- Track supplier payment and the claim deadline. If you do not pay the supplier the value of the supply plus tax within 180 days of the invoice date, the credit availed is generally added to output tax liability with interest under the prescribed process; it may be re-availed after payment. The Act also sets a general time limit tied to the due date for the September return following the financial year or furnishing the relevant annual return, whichever is earlier. Amendments and special provisions may affect a particular period, so verify the applicable consolidated law.
Cases that need extra care
Seller is a composition taxpayer
CBIC’s GST FAQ explains that ITC is not available on a purchase from a composition taxable person, because that supplier cannot charge GST in the ordinary way. Check the seller’s status and the invoice rather than assuming every marketplace seller is charging creditable GST.

Imports and reverse-charge transactions
Purchases from overseas sellers and transactions subject to reverse charge can involve different documentation and payment steps. The general domestic online-purchase workflow above does not resolve those cases; check the applicable import and reverse-charge rules or consult a GST practitioner.

Returns, cancellations, and price adjustments

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen to get transaction-specific advice
Seek GST practitioner guidance for unusual transactions, imports, reverse charge, mixed business and personal use, exempt supplies, or high-value claims. A marketplace’s payment receipt or tax line does not resolve questions about who supplied the item, which GST registration issued the invoice, or whether the credit is legally available.
