To claim a free Xbox game, open its Xbox Store listing and select the free acquisition or install option. To check whether it belongs to you, sign in to the Microsoft account used to claim it and look in your owned games library. A game marked “Included with Game Pass” or “Demo/Trial” is not the same as a free permanent entitlement.
How do I find and claim free Xbox games?
- Open the Store. On Xbox One, select Store from Home. Browse categories such as Top free games. Microsoft’s guide to Store browsing is at Get trusted apps and games from Microsoft Store.
- Check the listing’s entitlement label. Open the individual game page and confirm whether it says Free, Included with Game Pass, or identifies the item as a demo or trial.
- Select the free acquisition or install action. Follow the listing’s prompts to add or install the game. If you only want to browse, the Xbox Store’s free-games catalog is a live listing, not a guarantee that every item shown is a permanent free entitlement.
A game listed as free to download may still offer optional in-app purchases. The Store catalog can change over time and by region. For example, on October 4, 2026, the catalog for Xbox Series X|S-optimized free games included listings such as eFootball, Roblox – Xbox, Fortnite Battle Royale, Marvel Rivals, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, and Apex Legends. That is a dated snapshot, not a stable list of available games.

Free, Game Pass, and demo or trial: what is the difference?

| Included with Game Pass | Access is associated with the subscription, not proof that you purchased or permanently claimed the game. Check your owned library or order history for a separate entitlement. |
| Demo or trial | The listing provides a limited or trial experience, rather than establishing ownership of the full game. |
Microsoft’s catalog uses these labels separately, so do not treat every item visible among free-game results as a permanently owned full game. The catalog can be viewed at Top free Games on Xbox for Optimized for Xbox Series X|S.

How do I check whether I own a game on Xbox?
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used to claim or redeem it. Digital entitlements are associated with the account that acquired them.
- On Xbox One, open My games & apps > Ready to install. This is Microsoft’s documented place to look for content that is not currently installed or visible in the collection. On newer consoles, the corresponding area may appear as Full library > All owned games; wording can vary with console software.
- On PC, check Microsoft Store Library / My library / All owned. Microsoft’s guidance for library checks is in Trouble pushing an app or game to a device.
- For a code-based claim, review order history or redeemed codes. Xbox directs users to account.microsoft.com order history and redeemed codes for redemption and purchase records; see Redeem XBOX Codes or Gift Cards.
Being able to launch a game through a subscription or another account does not by itself show that your account owns it. Look for it in the signed-in account’s owned library or verify its entitlement through the account’s transaction or redemption records.

How do I redeem a free-game code?
- On Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, press the Xbox button.
- Select Store, then press the View button to open the side menu.
- Choose Redeem, enter the 25-character code, and follow the prompts.
Before redeeming, confirm that the console is signed in to the Microsoft account you want to own the game. Xbox warns that a redeemed code cannot be transferred to another account. Its instructions are on Redeem XBOX Codes or Gift Cards; Microsoft also explains account code redemption in Redeem a gift card or code to your Microsoft account.
Why is my game not showing in my Xbox library?
- Check the account. Make sure you are signed in to the Microsoft account that claimed the game or redeemed its code.
- Check the right library area. On Xbox One, look under My games & apps > Ready to install. On newer consoles, look in Full library > All owned games, if that wording is present in your software version.
- Check the listing and access type. A Game Pass-included game, demo, or trial may be playable without being a permanent entitlement attached to your account.
- Review code and purchase records. Use account.microsoft.com order history and redeemed codes to check a code-based transaction. Xbox says a code redeemed on a different account cannot simply be transferred.
- Check device compatibility. Microsoft advises confirming that a compatible version exists for the device you are using.
Can an Xbox disc give me a digital version?
Xbox Wire announced on August 26, 2026, that most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support claiming a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game. Xbox said the feature was starting with thousands of titles, with more to be added over time, and that some games were not supported at launch. This is a separate disc-to-digital feature—not a way to claim an ordinary free Store game—and eligibility needs to be checked for the specific title. See Your Discs. Now Also Digital.
